change the timing belt or wait?

Hi im reaching 60000 miles on my car (2010 TL 3.7 MT) and have heard alot of opinions from change the TB/WP/tensioners/pulleys at 60000 miles to 105000 miles. Its an american car but i live in canada and winters are usually 5 to -15 Fahrenheit and in extremes -15 to -40 Fahrenheit but this temp is only for 2-4 weeks every winter. Summer is normally 68-86 Fahrenheit. The car is a daily driver as well in summer and winter. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Depends the longer you don't change it, The more likely something will happen. Especially if the hydraulic tensioner is starting to go bad.

Which they usually do around 100,000k or 60,000 miles.

My hydraulic tensioner started making noise at 96,000 so I changed it out at work that day.

It's not worth risking a new engine over 600-1000$.

Also watch for where you take your car to get this done because they will probably rape you on labor. Charge like 6 hours or something and upcharge you on the parts as well. End up costing you 1200$ or something. Usually only takes 2-3 hours to do with bleeding the coolant system.

Thanks for the input. My tl is running smooth but im thinking ill just do it when i have spare time/money but for sure before i hit 70000 miles.

I'm way overkill on maintenance and won't be doing my timing belt until at least 80k miles, probably closer to 100k.

I just did my second differential/tranny/transfer fluid change out after 25k miles (I'm at 54k miles now). The fluids all still looked new when we drained them. For ~$80 it is worth the peace of mind though. I'm doing oil changes every 5k miles.

If you're going to do any maintenance I'd worry more about the fluids. When was the last time you did those?

I bought the car used in july 2015 since then i changed out transfer fluid, differential, 2 oil changes with full synthetic, topped up all the fluids as needed, spark plugs new. I keep ontop of oil changes at every 5k miles. I have service records from previous owner who also religiously brought the car to acura every 5000 for service and did everything. Just since im in a cold climate for a few months of the year a few opinions for the belt are great. So far on here and from some friends they all are recommending around 80-100k miles for the belt.

What does the noise sound like? I'm at 130k km, i'm thinking i should probably get the belt and water pump done sooner than later. I will likely get all the plugs replaced while i'm at it as well.

I'm curious as well. I have 30k on my 2012 tl 3.5. I started it up yesterday and the engine is making a high pitch whine that sounds like a supercharged car. It can be heard from inside the cabin and is fairly loud. It sounds like a belt or something.

I have acura care extended warranty will they generally look at this and address for free?

I get that noise on very cold startup when it's below -10C. You can try bringing it in, but if you can't replicate the problem they generally won't do anything for you, except charge you for diagnostic time.

Took car to Acura dealer today they replaced the alternator. Covered under AcuraCare.

I didn't really hear a sound in the video-seemed fairly normal to me. I live in socal.


Mine was really obvious(more so than your video). It sounded like the car was struggling for the belts to spin and the whine was high pitch like a supercharger. It was audible on startup and while idling from inside the cabin. So loud that I was like...ok somethings not right.

It was clearly coming from the left side of the engine where the belts are located.Send another video with your phone inside the engine bay

You mean right side of the engine. Not left.

Hydraulic tensioner makes a whining like sound more of a high pitch wub wub wub over and over again and you can distinctly hear it from the passenger side wheel well. Basically by near the oil pan on that side.

Thanks. No, mine only sounds at COLD startups. No high pitched whine at all while idling nor running.

If you have any practical experience I would suggest changing your own spark plugs. The dealer will charge a small fortune for this with a high price for the plugs (x6). It is a very easy job on a TL V6.
