Black stuff under spare tire

Hey everyone,

Quick question for anyone who may know. Had a spill of some type of liquid in the trunk, and it reeks!

All the back tar looking stuff is soaked and stinks, it's brittle and cracking because or this, is there something I can get to replace it if I rip everything up to get rid of this smell?

Thanks everyone

I believe that black tar stuff is there as a sound deadener and to prevent vibrations. If you tear it out, it's as sinple as buying some sound deadening material and replacing it with that. I.e dynomat or fat mat...etc.

That Tar stuff actually tends to dry out and crack on it's own so I actually doubt anything spilled on it and caused that, more that it just happened to occur on it's own but the liquid that fell on it moistened it activating the odour.

Your issue is that it is re-moistened. Your best option is probably to either keep the trunk open with a large fan blowing on it for a couple hours (to dry it again). Option 2 is to pull it out.

I hope we aren't helping some guy clean out his trunk after transporting a dead body.

Well this took a different turn than I was expecting LOL

Ended up cleaning the whole trunk and letting it dry overnight, hopefully that helps!

No I didn't google that lol, just that I have had a variety of cars and usually fudge around in the rear where the spare is (tor business purposes ) and noticed that this stuff generally cracks like that after a few years regardless of what happens. It just dries up and does that lol. In OP's case, the only thing to change is that it got liquid on it, so the best course of action is to dry it back up and air it out. When in doubt, air it out! I'm sure I just stole that slogan from somewhere.

That's the plan, airing it out!

Only thing that sucks, it's bitter cold out and my garage is packed full of crap, so I've gotta stand outside make sure no one steals anything (yeah it's that kind of neighbourhood -_-)

You can't open the trunk while the garage is in the closed garage?

Yeah, sure.. "moving".. Hah. Mine's been a mess for the better half of a decade now. Need to clear things out. =( I was hardly able to get my snow blower out this winter.
