'11 SH-AWD/clunk and thumping in suspension, and other issues

Hi everyone I have a few issues with my 600 mile TL. I'm going to list them below and if you have any idea or had similar issues please let me know, the dealer doesn't see anything wrong.

-Thumping sound and clunking in front suspension, feels like lower control arm ball joints are loose. I feel it mostly over patches of bumps.

-Thumping sound in rear suspension as if the rear struts are a little loose from the strut mount

-Hits hard over bumps, I really feel the tires are overinflated to be honest. But I haven't checked.

-Very faint engine knocking sound from 1100-2000 rpm(only, no other rpm) from slow take off, maybe still in break in period?

-Buzzing sound from mid section of exhaust on take off. Heat shield loose or similar?

-Tranny seems to be lost at lower rpms. At one time I was in traffic and I wanted to accelerate and it banged and then downshifted. Symptoms of a faulty tps or drive by wire?

- Rust on threads of front struts? I found this quite unusual to be honest.

- Lastly leather wrinkle is very prominent-lol lets see what the dealer does about this.

Im coming from a 2010 Tsx, granted it has fatter tires and the suspension is softer but I should not hear or feel clunking in the front and thumping all around.

I did remove the battery cable to try to reset the ECU and the tranny computer. Unsure if there was a way to reprogram the tranny comp or the drive by wire(I know I had to do it on my 08 maxima to relearn the idle for the throttle control).

Thanks everyone, and I still love the car!

Take it to the dealer and tell them your concerns. Make them make it right.

about the transmission being lost... dont fret... characteristic of the TL.. i've had 4 TLs and a CL-S and they all felt "lost"

the strongest transmission i had was the 08 TL-S...

silver: dealership said it was all like that from the factory, even the representative said so. So I sucked it up and left. But I think the front ball joints might need attention. I might probably swap them out and see if anything changes, its 130 a pop.

Black: The Tl's tranny is getting better. Maybe it's learning my driving habits? But I love the car, in sport mode and paddles just awesome! Now I need some tints and rims and to shadow my lights lol.

I just made the exact same thread in the suspension section! My car is currently at the dealership having the same issue addressed. Another vehicle was brought in last week for the same issue. They have yet to resolve the issue. I hope to hear something this week.

Apparently my front left strut was "defective". They are replacing it. I pick the car up tomorrow. We'll see if that solves the problem.

Hopefully that'll be the cure. I found out at the end of a speed bump upon hitting the street again is where I feel the clunk the most by my feet. I really think it has something to do with the lca.

i know this is a very old thread but did anyone get the suspension bit resolved? i have the exact same symptoms regarding the front and rear suspension. i've gone to the dealer twice and they say there's nothing wrong with the suspension. air pressure on the tires are all at 33psi cold. i got so frustrated the first time the car came back from the dealer that i put the car on a lift at my friend's shop and took a pry bar to check all the bushings. the bushing on the front LCA's had stress marks but were not cracked all the way through. i figured that'd be the culprit and that the dealer would take care of it. so i mentioned it the second time i took it to the dealer and they said that as long as the bushing isnt cracked all the way through, it won't make a clunk and it can't be warrantied. the master tech showed me the car on the lift and took a pry bar to everything and seemed ok. but my suspension is still clunking. this is extremely frustrating. anyone get this resolved?

I think it's the nature of the car. My TSX never did it and when I first asked about this the master tech made sure all the bolts were torqued down correctly.

So I have a 2010 TL, with 9800 miles on it, and I also have this right rear suspension clunking sound. Thought for a while that I was being too picky, but I'm convinced this is not normal. May be a design flaw. Glad to see others here have the same issues, and that I'm not alone here. Going to complain to the dealer at next oil change and see what happens. Did anyone ever I get their noise fixed?

When I brought my '12 SH-AWD in for a prop shaft whine replacement I asked them to investigate a clunk from the back end. I thought it was just because it was sub-zero temps, but it turned out to be a "bad strut". I never got a good explanation of what "bad" meant, but they replaced it under warranty and I don't hear it anymore.

I have a 2009 tl-SH with 36,000 miles. Out of warranty already, so I cant get the dealer to fix it free. I am also getting that metallic bump on irregular road surfaces, but at speeds under 35 MPH. No noise at higher speeds or speed bumps. Its like the exhaust pipe is banging on something or a stone rattling on a heat shield. I have checked everything and all suspension bushings are OK and the exhaust is not banging on anything. All exhaust support bushings are OK. Can I get some input on this noise.
By the way, I have noticed comments on a sluggish transmission. I had that problem. The dealer could not find anything wrong. Got a recall note, for this, and the dealer reprogrammed the trany computer. Big improvement.

Sway bar end links tend to clunk when they fail. Have you checked those?

I have checked all front and rear bushings and all are OK. I have been under my car abought 8 times, looking for this noise, and finding nothing. I do have +40 yesrs of racing cars and building race cars and am quite good at finding and repairing problems, but this one has got me, and I AM MAD. :-(

I have the same issue. Driving out of my neighborhood daily over street cracks, and it sounds like a muted "pop" or thump. I only seem to hear it when driving below 40mph. Annoying as hell - never had a car that made that sort of sound over minor bumps. I've reported it twice to the dealer and they said everything under there (rear suspension) was tight. I had one of their loaner cars - same year TL as mine - and it made the same exact sound, so I agree with others that it may be a characteristic of the car. Frustrating.

Just started getting this at 31000 miles on my '12 6MT. clunking in the rear, and also from under the car I hear a sound like a dry bushing--a creaking sound. Hard to say how to reproduce, but I have noticed it when the wheel is turned all the way, such as backing out of a driveway.

Made my appointment with the dealer wouldn't you know it, I couldn't reproduce the noise today.

It's actually several different noises. There's the thump from the rear, which honestly I could live with, but then there's a bushing creaking that sounds like it is coming from under the console, and then theres a knocking which sounds like the front end.

Went to my dealer today, Curry in Scarsdale, NY. They replaced a "shield bracket bushing" (whatever that is,) and claimed that should solve the problem. I did not hear the noise on the way home, so hopefully this is resolved.

Well, I googled shield bracket bushing, and came up with this thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-tires-wheels-suspension-100/front-sway-bar-bushings-bracket-fitment-898873/

Looks remarkably like a sway bar bushing.

No, although they used the word, "shield" on the work ticket, the service writer told me it was part of the suspension.

UPDATE: Took back to the dealer with 25K miles. Clunk noise was getting worse. I made the technician get in the car to ride with me. He heard it too. Dealer ended up replacing BOTH rear struts under warranty. It is much improved now.
