'09 TL AWD A/C is horrible

I bought this car last year and the AC in it has been not very cold since I have owned it. Do they just have a weak AC or should I have it looked at? I also noticed that when sync is on and I have LO set for temp that the driver side is warmer than the passenger side. Do you think I have a leak?

Thanks, Abs

Sounds like something is wrong. No issues with my '10, even after last year's "Sahara summer."

We had a 09 that would freeze you out. My 2012 TL was weak when I got it. I took it to a friend (since the dealer said nothing was wrong) and had him check the AC system. He found low on Freon. He put it half way between the high and low recommendation as that is what was recommended (too high or too low it will not cool properly) and it now gets very cold.

Have your AC checked out.

Yeah, get it checked out. I have a 2010 and it blows cold even in the FL summers.

There is a self-diagnostic function for the HVAC. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following:

1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0) and then back to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode and then the ON mode

2. Press and hold the FAN ON/OFF button, then within 10 seconds press and release the REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER/MIRROR DEFOGGER button five times Release the FAN ON/OFF button, then the self diagnostic begins.

If there is a problem with the system, it will flash AUTO, 88 and AUTO, 88 and WINDSHIELD DEFROST, or 88 and MODE. If there is more than one problems, they are displayed one at a time in sequence followed by a pause. If there are no problems detected, the segments do not illuminate, and the system appears to be turned off. The problems are displayed with some codes you may need to take it to the dealer to repair. There are lots of codes!!! If you have codes and you can post them I may be able to interpret them for you.

To cancel the self-diagnostic turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), or press the engine start/stop button to select the OFF mode.

Hope that helps.

Hey guys thanks so much for the info. Since I posted this, the driver side blows warm and the passenger side does ok, but it can't cool the car on 80+degree days. I am going to try and run the diagnosis and see what happens.

Thanks Again!

Dwest and everyone had great suggestions but also wanted to add. I would suggest not just having someone add freon without adding dye to the system and letting it run for a few days and recheck with glasses for a potential leak. Ac leaks can be very hard to find if small but could be something as small as a leak at the pressure line valve stem where you check pressure and add and remove freon from. They are replaceable easily on most acuras by a tech. Could have came slightly under charged for the factory and just now causing symptoms it happens. I personally think ac is the weakest link on acuras across the board. American cars will freez your gonads off. They just might not get you to your destination. I also believe that is why acura released the cooled seating option in later tls to compensate for there subpar ac systems. Sometimes I think a bag of ice with a fan is better than acuras ac systems on a good day.

Bought my '09 almost 2 years ago. A/C is disappointing. On days above 85* when the car has been outside, it takes nearly 10-15 minutes for the air to blow cold. The air feels slightly cool when I first start up, and like I just mentioned, takes nearly 15 minutes to get to a comfortable feel. Not happy to sit in a car that is over 100* with black leather interior.

Anyone's AC that doesn't blow cold within 5 minutes has issues and needs to be charged. Our 09 and 2012 had cold ac in 110 degree heat here in Texas.

What about the rear air? My 2009 TL gets 5% the flow of the front vents. Dealership says that's how it is supposed to be.

I had a Toyota Avalon for many years that had ice cold ac. Had some work done and after picking up the car the ac wasnt its usual cold self. Mechanic hit it with a freon charge and just charging it from the low end of the 'green' range on the can to the high end of the range made all the difference. New to acura ownership but have had an Odyssey minivan for awhile - while not a meat locker like the Toyota no issues cooling that big cabin down with or without the separate unit for the back turned on.

Get it checked for freon or charge it yourself, but dont overcharge thinking 'more is better' if you get into the red zone you can blow seals.

It seems as if your A/C is not performing normally. I could invite Rocky to punch sides of beef in mine while I drive over hot melted asphalt in a hot New Orleans, LA summer. It takes 3-5 minutes to cool down.

I think the A/C is rated at 1.25 to 1.5 Tons which could cool an apartment. My 3 bedroom house only has 2.5 Ton A/C and Rocky is invited there as well.
