Test Pipe Question

I don't know my exhaust stuff very much...please don't laugh at me if i am asking stupid questions. And My question is that, is it possible to add the XLR8 Test Pipe without the J pipe, and what kind of difference in sound and power i would be expecting with the test pipe installed??

Thank You.

IMO the difference is so negligible for both performance and sound that there really isnt any point. Now with the J pipe coupled with the test pipe, I noticed a significant difference!

Totally agree. Test pipe only ~= 0 WHP gain.

I just want my exhaust to have a bit more deep rumble sound to it, but no too loud to upset the children in the backseat. Maybe something close to the exhaust note of a s5.
Reving the car to 3k and sitting in the back seat, the exhaust actually makes a pretty satisfying sound, dont know if any of you guys noticed.. but i just want to have a bit more.

Test pipe will add some razz. You'll probably lose a little power down low and pick it back up higher in the rev range. It's not going to be an enormous gain ,but should net a positive PEAK horsepower result, just not necessarily useable power.

If you want to achieve the grumble without major work, I would suggest the comptech axleback exhaust. They're way overpriced IMO, but it's because of such a limited production I'm sure. One side does bolt on, but a muffler shop will need to weld on the other (not sure what's up with that, first time ever on a Honda/Acura I can think of).

You'll get a little more growl, and pick up ~5-8 HP across the powerband, without any annoying drone or buzz.

Reason you bolt on one side and weld the other is because the stock exhaust has one side bolted and the other runs the entire length of the cat back. Why/how will the axel back net 5-8 and the cat back only 8-10 (or so I remember?).

Oh I'm aware of the layout - I just don't know WHY they did it that way. All the previous ones I've worked on, you could bolt both on....,Accords, TLs, CLs.

Any exhaust system past the cat, your major limiting factor is going to be the muffler. Yes pipe diameter matters. Sure, you might gain more with true duals. Under boost, you probably outflow the stock pipes - I get all that, and agree. In spite of that - The factory mufflers will always sacrifice flow/power for noise reduction/ride quality. The comptechs seem to achieve the noise reduction by using heavier/thicker stainless steel than the factory units but reducing the baffling / restriction to increase the flow. The result is a sportier free-flowing sound, without the razz/pop you would get from just lopping off the muffler or putting on an N-1 style pipe.

How much are the comptech axleback exhaust?
Power gain isn't the main reason for me to switch out the stock exhaust, i am more for the sound. And does anyone have it on their 2012 TL awd? How about the tips that comes with the ct exhaust, quad or dual?

The test pipe alone may free up 3 hp or so. It will increase the exhaust note very little.

For roughly the price of the CT-E axlebacks you can get our entire catback exhaust which will deliver more sound and power.

I've seen the CT axel back on two 4G MMC's (white/silver), so i know it can be done. I remember the axel back being 800 something, pretty expensive IMO. The price of paying someone to install & weld it on might overall be greater than buying xlr8 system.

Thanks for the info pesudo

The entire catback exhaust might be too much sound for me...i am just looking for something that adds a bit more rumble sound to the oem exhaust.

On the 3rd gen TL-S the j-pipe made gains of roughly 12-15 whp and 15-20 wtq depending on the RPM.

Currently in a huge dilemma on what to do with my exhaust, and i think video clips would be the best for me to make a decision. I have searched up on youtube, and i found the ones with intake jpipe and test pipe, but never found video clips just with the j pipe.

Who knows, I call them periodically (every 1-2 months), and the answer has been the same for the past 6 months, the item is ready for production and needs to go into manufacturing phase.

I have been hearing the same thing, CT is really slow when it comes to introducing new products. How long did it take them to make the icebox for tsx?

CT icebox is the main reason why i didn't pull the trigger on SRI, but it's taking too long for ct to put it on sale.
