SH-AWD DIFFERENTIAL: Non-Honda oil, which one?

OK, if you look at my signature, you see that I own an RDX, not a TL. But the rear-diff works the same on all of the various models, except for some minor differences.

So, has anyone used any fluid other than Z1 or the newer DPSF fluid? more than just "I put xyz fluid in last week and so far, so good"?

Has anyone used AmsOil, Redline, or another aftermarket fluid in their SH-AWD rear diff for 10K miles? thoughts?

The DPSF fluid was originally speced for the CR-V rear diff, which does not to my understanding, have constantly overdriven clutches like the SH system. And if this was such a good fluid, why was it not orginally spec'd for the SH system, instead of Z1? In other words, I have a real concern about using it in my SH rear diff instead of Z1, which i would assume will soon no longer be available, else why move to DPSF?

So I wonder if Redline D4 ATF would have the correct FM (friction modifiers) to work with the clutches in a SH diff? I certainly like the idea of a synthetic fluid, instead of the plain-jane DPSF.

I posted in the RDX section, but there is a lot more experimentation going on here in the RL, TSX, etc. sections on ATF, etc.

I asked this question in a different thread and decided to find out about the fluids for myself. Searching the net for DPSF brought me to this thread. Do you have any further updates on this topic?

I'm also very interested in the subject! I'd also prefer to use synthetics if at all possible... Please keep us posted!

I have used Redline D4 in my 2010 rear differential for 20000 miles and it runs like new. My car has 58,000 miles overall. D4 is a better base synthetic with the same amount of friction modifiers as the new Honda synthetic ATF. Redline says it is a OEM substitute and useable in all Honda/Acura ATF fluid applications. I also use Redline Racing F Type and D4 in a 2 to 1 ratio in my tranny and love the crisp shifts, and no metal on the magnet when I change fluid. I change 3qt of tranny fluid every other oil change.

I have seen many posts claiming that the Honda DPSF & Acura DPF2 are the same thing. What is that based on? The part numbers are not exactly the same.
I took a unopened bottle of Acura fluid into the Honda parts counter. They too thought it was the same stuff as their Honda fluid. Then they opened a new bottle of Honda & I opened the Acura. They have very differant colors. Is their chemistry differant? I don't know. Did they just add a differant dye? Don't know that either. But I will not gamble my $40K car on a speculation just to save 3 bucks on 3 bottles of fluid. I got the car because of the SH-AWD system it has and I am not going to risk it for the cost of a bottle of water.

On a similiar topic. Do you drive around town looking for the cheapest gas too? Do you put regular gas in your Acura? How do we even know what exactly is going into our tanks?

OK, since this is the TL forum, I assume that your vehicle is a TL, and that it has the SH-AWD system? thanks.

I have decided to use D4 in my own 2009 RDX, but it has only been 500 miles so far. When I have more miles I will report back. I currently have 27K miles.

I am using a mix of 50% D4 and 25% Racing and 25% Racing Light-weight in my 2009 RDX transmission. I change 4qts out of 8qts total, about every 4K miles. The RDX trans drains more than 3qts.

Just drained D4 at 13K mile interval - just two slight traces of material on each side of the drain plug magnet - less than previous OCIs.

14 Nov 2013/ 40,466 miles - 13,432 / Red Line D4 synthetic ATF
08 Jun 2012/ 27,034 miles – 4,613 / Red Line D4 synthetic ATF
22 Nov 2011/ 22,421 miles – 4,377 / Honda DPSF
03 Apr 2011/ 18,044 miles – 5,419 / Honda ATF-Z1
29 Jun 2010/ 12,625 miles – 6,565 / Honda ATF-Z1, safety wire plugs
30 Oct 2009/ 6,060 miles – 6,060 / Honda ATF-Z1

Changed early and often, because this car is driven only/ mostly city at low speed, hilly streets.

Out of curiosity has anyone sent their oil and fluid samples to Blackstone Labs for analysis?
I send mine out for my previous S2000 and current corvette after every fluid change. Haven't for the TL. Would be interesting to see what different fluids are doing in the TC, diff and transmission.
