Cold Air Intake

I was thinking about putting a cold air intake on my 2013 tl shawd is this a good thing or a bad thing? I heard it would bog your car down or it might give it more horse power and keep it cooler and sound a little bit more aggressive? Your thoughts guys is it a good idea. Does it make the engine sound louder when I push on the pedal and give it throttle.

Depends 100% on the filter

The factory intake is already close to a cold air intake. It's just not piping and runs an internal filter rather than an external.

Will go gain some power? Maybe but not enough to notice.
Will you gain sound? Yes.

Youre better off running the factory intake or swapping in the Takeda if you want to gain sound.

There is no cold air intake for the 4G TL ,unless you can get your hands on a CTE Icebox. The stock intake remains the best option for performance.
If you are only interested in sound then go with the Takeda SRI.

Your best bet is a DIY intake. If you search some other forums, there are some gains to be had with a 4" intake. Supporting mods of course help the cause as well.

Coming from someone with a Takeda intake on his 3.5L.

Pros:
Awesome sound under heavy throttle including a nice audible vtec crossover (no increased sound under low to med throttle)
dyno proven gains in high rpm
easy DIY install
increase in throttle response
Easy to remove and resell if you get bored of it

Cons:
A little low end power loss

Is there any difference between the Takeda and say a custom plumbing job with a cone filter? Seems like you could build something better for way less $$ ?

I would stay away from the flexible extension supplied with the Weapon R intake. While it may appear to be a viable option to convert what is basically a Short Ram Intake to a cold air system it actually isn't. It is best to have the intake tubing smooth, less restrictive, soft transitions of curves and minimal bends to minimize turbulence of the air entering the intake. Why...........the air flow needs to be as smooth as possible before passing the MAF so that it can get an accurate reading, thereby keeping optimal air / fuel ratio.

Heat is your enemy and a Short Ram Intake (SRI) coupled with the plastic covers in the engine bay will affect performance. Having run the Takeda SRI ,the stock intake and currently the Icebox, I will opt for the stock intake any day. The SRI and heat soak is very noticeable, the car will run rich as well, I know this from running numerous data logs during tuning. As a matter of fact the car also runs rich with the Icebox ,however since my car is tuned those parameters were all corrected. There is much more to performance than just bolting on an intake and many people will equate more sound with an increase with performance, same assumption is made with a loud exhaust. Truth is, you cannot feel a few HP gain on a 4000lb car.

I agree with not using flex tubing. I've used the HVAC flexible line previously vs smooth rigid and it is very noticeable difference in airflow. i know its not a car, but same concept.

Absolutely, air flow is air flow.

yeah I had the takeda short ram and switched back to stock intake.. Boy does my car ever feel alive again, for those with the short Rams I highly recommend switching back to stock. My car lost quite a bit of low end power, well for me it was very noticeable also my gears would be so very jerky I have a 5AT and sometimes I would turn a corner and apply gas and it would jerk really hard on the transmission. Wish they kept producing the CT engineering .. Thanks anyways for the response

Just get a K&N drop in filter and call it a day. The stock step up if legit as is. Take that $$ and get you some PCD'S and Ktuner.

I'm going to remove my Takeda intake this weekend and go back to stock, not because I don't like it but because I'm probably going to be selling the TL soon. I'll also report back on power impressions since I've had it installed now for around 3 years. My guess is the car will be faster off the line but a little robbed on the top end.

I just got back from removing and reinstalling my oem intake. Here are my thoughts, some low-end torque has definitely been restored but I can't say for sure that's 100% attributed to going back to the stock intake. I had to remove the battery which in turn resets the ecu and can temporarily give you a boost in power until it relearn a your driving habits. I will say I definitely feel a loss in top-end power but for me it's probably better to keep as much low-end power as possible since I'm primarily a city driver.

If anyone is interested I have a near mint black takeda intake that I will be posting for sale in the black market soon.

I love my takeda. While I notice the low end power loss, I drive highway almost all the time in a shitty "left lane camper" area. I don't feel any loss at the top-end where I need it the most, I can't say for sure if it is more power but there isn't any loss.

However I love the sound of it. I've deleted my resonator on the stock intake before installing the Takeda, and it wasn't even close to the amount of sound I currently have. That alone is worth it for me. IDC what other people say about the power loss low-end. It's not important to me, but the gain in sound brings a smile to my face which is what this is all about.
