Flash Drive organization hints

Does anyone have any tips for organizing music on a flash drive?

I decided that I wasn't going to spend the time - AGAIN- to read my CD's on to the hard drive (please Acura let us loyal owners copy the HDD from car to car). However, being a "thrifty" engineer, I decided to buy a $45 - 18 gig flash drive to store my music rather than buy another iPod for $200. I set up 6 root folders on my computer when I copied my music files over but what I see on the Audio screen is a lot more disorganized. I have to scroll through everything to get from one root file to the next. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

That's a killer for 17 gigs of Root>Artist>Album>Song

correct... And I don't have a flash drive that large as the USB interface on pre MMC 4G TL's is quite laggy....

I see you have a 2012 TL, be grateful for that as the USB interface has been improved some.

In all honesty, get an iPod Nano (or used iPod) and through it in the car and call it a day.

+1 on the iPod nano.

It's so much easier to organize your songs and playlist folders using iTunes than using a USB flash drive.

That's probably what I'll do in the end but I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel yet.

+2 on an iPod. Life is so much simpler when you can just plug in your entire music collection. Not to mention the added convenience of making your music selections via voice commands, by song, artist, playlist, etc.

I began with using a usb drive.

After awhile, it became a hassle to update because I only had a 16gb flash drive and i had to begin deleting songs because it kept getting full (not sure if 32gb+ work on the TL). It was also VERY SLOW (2010 model) so I hate using it.

I tried 3 usb drives and figured that it has nothing to do with the usb drive itself, but the TLs software/hardware.

I then began using my phone's bluetooth feature. Whatever I am listening to at the moment, will continue playing after it connects. The connection process is slow, but the bluetooth doesn't appear to sound different than the USB. The only problem now is that for 09-11 models, it only shows "play/pause" and "audio setup" or something on the bluetooth screen. The 2012 model has the song display for bluetooth, it would be the choice for me if I had a 2012 model.

Also, the 2012 model has "song by voice", not sure why you aren't using that.

Slightly off topic, but just a side note: I have been going to the dealership and talking to the techs and advisors about possible updates to the software for 09-11 so it could either work faster or introduce the same features (song by voice, bluetooth song info display) as the mmc. However, after going back n forth, talking to them, them supposedly talking to corporate, the answer at the end was "no updates".

If the 09-11 owners could be more vocal about this, we may be able to push for an update! I mean, we paid $38-43k+ on these cars, I think a miniscule update wouldn't hurt.

I haven't tried it in this car yet but in my last car the Bluetooth audio streaming sucked my iPhone battery down big time.

Song by voice is not available with the flash drive.

That's unfortunate that acura would introduce a feature as helpful as sogn by voice only to limit it to the hdd or an ipod.

You're also right about the bluetooth draining the battery, however for me, I use my phone enough in a day to completely drain it before the day ends as I have numerous programs running on it all the time.

I honestly don't think acura has their audio system figured out yet. Even with the mmc updates, it appears to be very rough, archaic (in feel/look), and unfinished. I hope acura addresses this problem in the future, especially as technology will only more forward.

The Ford Sync system is a bit better / more refined... but even that has hicups... In time everything will get better.

Yes I had SYNC in my last car. It really was a cut above the Acura system. That was the only thing that was better. The coolest feature was that it read my phone book list in from my iPhone and then the system recognized the contact from my voice command. You did not need to create voice tags. That was very very impressive!

I honestly think acura should think about outsourcing the development of their audio/nav/phone software. They're moving at a snails pace and it's pretty depressing that our $37-45k cars are so behind when it comes to tech like this. I hope they fix it soon, and I hope car manufacturers are more like tech companies when it comes to software upgrades, and not just let us (customers) rot on a vine after we buy the car.

Just for example, our 09-11 models do not have automatic phone book updating, so we need to manually import the phone book every time. We also have an usb interface that moves uncomfortably slow. No bluetooth song display, etc etc.

btw brother acura, did ford offer a way to upgrade sync to their newer versions? or did they also just not upgrade software?

on a side note, other than the higher resolution screen. my 2010 TL's interface/menus looks too similar to my cousins 2007 rdx tech's interface. Where are the updates acura? this is the digital/information age!!

Nope... and I'd be surprised if they did. Their after sales support sucks. My garage was filled with smoke because the Power Transfer Unit leaked on the exhaust pipe and they forced me to bring it in four times while they nicked and dimed that serious flaw.

I don't have my TL (yet) but I found on other systems like the Pio front end I have in my current car it really helps to use Fatsort on the USB drive.
