DVD/External Video on Tech Display
Hello Follow TL'ers,
Just looking for some feedback to see who would be interested in being able to put DVD/External video feed onto the NAV display. I design these types of devices, and just seeing if there is enough interest for me to put the resources into it.
I would make it plug and play as possible, the end goal would be no wire splicing needed.
Let me know what you folks think, I have seen similar devices for for about $700-$800+ or so for other vehicles, I think I could do better than that if the interest level is there.
I also think it would work on all newer model Acura's and Honda's also.
If one of the site disty's would be interested in carrying this type of product let me know.
Thanks,
Jason

I think it would be a pretty cool idea and I would be interested in one if the price would be around $300. Depending on the quality, options, and ease of installations, I could be persuaded to pay more. The 8"
screen is large enough that this would be a very nice option.
Just to make it clear though, a DVD player would have to be mounted somewhere in the car though, right? I know our audio system plays DVD-A and probably would not be capable of playing HD-DVDs or stuff like that, but I'd like to see what it is you'd come up with.
Either way, I'll keep an eye on this thread to see where it goes.

There is a company developing this and it will be 350.00. They are taking too long so if you could make it work first i would be in. Here is the link if interested.

It would pass the video through, until you wanted to use the external source.

I would be interested in something like this, tho like others have said, I would be much more inclined to purchase it if the price was a little lower. Also, is it possible to hook up a small Blu-Ray player? Has something like come out yet? All of my new DVD's and any DVD's I buy in the future will all be Blue-Ray....
In any case, keep us posted...let us know what you come up with and if you can keep the price low....

You can hook up any video source you want. However I would anticipate that you would have to disable the HD output. The display I believe is only going to be able to do 800x600 at best. It may be lower then this. So some scaling would have to be implemented.
I know you guys would want this for cheap as possible, but the $350 mark was a bit under of what I was anticipating. Its a lot of resources to put something like this togethor.
Its still on the table, I am doing a cost analysis now to see what it would cost to put togethor.

Two channels, one for 1 component type input/1 for VGA input.
This is just allong the lines of what I was thinking.

It's 800x480 analog display...
And I'd be interested too. Would love to have a device that would be hidden easily, with a long cord with the two inputs on the end. Could hide the inputs in the arm rest or something, and plug in a notebook / netbook or portable media player, etc. That would be awesome.

The cord can be as long as you want. It would have a VGA connector, and RCA connectors on it. So you can plug in whatever length of cable into it.
We are going to make a decision within the next week on it. I am trying to find the speces for the display.
How do you know its 800x480 analog?

From the specs on the Acura website. In addition, when creating wallpapers to use on the screen, they have to be 800x480 to keep the correct aspect ratio. The connection could be digital, but knowing the auto industry, they went with analog to keep costs down.

Sorry, fellas, but it's time to put this thread to rest.
DaJokerz hasn't been in this thread since January 2010, and hasn't been in the forums since February 2010, so there's not much chance he's still working on this.
If he pops back in here he can send me a PM and we'll see if we want to open the thread.
