2009 Base Compass Problem

Anyone had an issue with their compass on a base model? I disconnected the battery for a couple of days to remove the pillars (didn't want to take chances triggering a bag while crushing the crush clips which never actually crushed btw - what a pia) and ever since my compass is blinking and not calibrating. It's not displaying CAL, just blinking and not usually correct. Worked perfect before disconnecting the battery. I've tried the manual's procedure, but never get a CAL like it says will/should appear. The manual also says to put the key in position II, but never to start the car, but then to drive it slowly in circles, which I'm not sure how you could do without starting the car (unless you're on a really steep hill ) so that's a bit confusing. I also cannot change the zone from 8 like it says (I'm in 7) - the MFD "wheel" moves on the left, but it never changes from 8. Any trick to this? Do I have to disconnect the battery again or something? I didn't care about it for months, but now it's bothering me for some reason... I've tried about everything I can think of to no avail. No magnetic stuff around or anything. I saw CAL show up once but the car wasn't started, then of course when I started the car, CAL disappeared. Ugh.

Apparently the compass "box" is on the back deck near the sub and replacing the sub with one with a much larger magnet is throwing it off.
