09 TL Stereo Upgrades

Has anyone swapped out their stock speakers and installed an amp and subs for the 09 TL's? I have the non tech package and the 280 watts total just doesn't do it. I'm looking to upgrade and after reading about the extensive changes to DeathtoToasters ride (Nice audio conversion Job), it makes me not want to bother. It appears that my front speakers put out more BASS then the sub. Just for #$%^'s and giggles i ran the sub feed to a line output converter and hooked up a fosgate 75.2 amp to the sub and it sounded way better. Damn near fried the thing but I got bass. I like to check out crutchfield to see what fits and they dont have jack. Any thoughts from anyone else who may have been down this road? Thanks in advance.

WOW Really? the tech package stock stereo is that good huh? They didn't have many TLs in stock when i was looking to buy and I didnt need the nav / DVD player so i went with the non - tech package as they had the color I wanted. I figured I would be upgrading the stereo anyways so why bother with the enhanced stereo system. Looks like its going to be a fun project then. I was just curious if anyone had been down this path yet and had any "oh by the way's" to mention before i got started.

I hated the old ELS in the 3G TL, but the 4G Tech ELS 440W is a huge improvement, the clarity is greatly improved and the low end power up through about 70% volume is excellent. The depth of range is now more a reflection of the source material than the ELS itself. Kudos to Acura, it helped keep me in a TL. The Genesis Lexicon was in the same league as well.

I wouldn't say it's "that good", it's just good enough. One of the better stock systems I've heard. At least for me and my listening habits. A custom system would be ideal to give it more balls as the XM radio at 40 is still not loud enough when rolling down the fwy with the windows open, but it's just not applicable for my term with the car.

I agree with Keith, my 3G TL system was mediocre, this is good.

I think it's the best stock audio system too. Supporting DVD-A is also make it very unique and sound quality of DVD-A is at the extreme. I haven't experienced that before.
I think if we go aftermarket round, we can upgrade speakers, but I don't think there is any HU out there support DVD-A yet that you can upgrade.

CCUUBBMM,

I recently bought an SH-AWD with tech. i came form an 04 WRX with about 3g's in the stereo. MB Quart Premium speakers all around powered by a JL Audio 300.4 amp. Kenwood Excelon 989 reciever with ipod and sirius. JL Audio W6v2 12 inch sub powered by Precision power 400 watt mono block amp (10 years old but still kicks). Out of the whole stereo the only thing i miss is the sub. The sub is lacking at high volume. It just stops hitting harder at around 60 to 70%. I am thoroughly impressed by the speakers. Now saying that, it isn't as good as the MB's but its not that bad for me to want to rip through the car and screw something up for a little more clarity at high volume which i only use about 10% of the time. But maybe the sub......

Yep. I think the sub is lacking a bit. It's great at a reasonable volume, but when you want to crank it up it disappoints. I've been thinking about adding something small to beef it up a bit. Not looking forward to running that 12V wire from the battery to the trunk though.

EXACTLY- Ive run the 12v lines through 5 or six other vehicles and have always managed to find a way to do it. None of them were brand new and I'm trying to keep the brand new leather smell for a bit. But I'm torn due to the lack of umph that I get with my other car (Jeep Grand Cherokee). Part of me wants to take the easy road and just boost the sub a bit and the other wants to yank the whole system (except the head unit) and run it the right way.

I think the sound is pretty good, possibly from the sound deading materials used. However, my RSX has the worst sound ever, I am constantly upgrading that thing, but the sound increased when I added Dynamat in a few areas.

I feel you. The tech package runs circles around the non-tech. But as with the other comments, the sub is governed. I mean, to me, listening to a lot of heavy bass songs, it sounds like its about to pop in my car. And it rattles just as it did in the 3G. it is a bigger sub than in the 3G thats why Im surprised it doesnt hit harder. One other thing I dont like is how they have the mid bass coming from the front door speakers. I dont know if anyone noticed that. its like the sub takes the ower end of the spectrum from 80Hz on down. I have 10+ years in car audio installation.

With 10 yrs plus in audio you should know that bigger is not always better. I have a huge Sonance 12" sub for my home theatre and I demo'd a 8" Sunfire sub that blew it away. It's not size in the TL, but rather the quality. I mean we're getting a sound system package from a company that one the bid, ya feel me? So "audiofile" quality is not really there. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great stock system, but I'm with you, it's lacks balls when you push it, especially with the weak ass signal from XM!

Here's what i did. I ran a 4ga wire to the trunk to supply the amp, Got ground from the bracket that holds the spare tire. Installed the amp (Fosgate Punch 75.2) and ran to a Fosgate 12 inch band pass tuned box. Bridged the amp, sent the sub feed from the stock amp to a LOC and and into the amp. I just got the schematics for the whole sound system so now i can make rca's from the HU and run direct to the amp. The 12" complements the existing system so well that I actually like it. No dynamat, no foam, nothing. Like CWBiggs says, the TL is a bass trap (search his post for an awesome thread about the miracle box he built). My next steps are to switch out the Punch 75.2 for the punch 150 i have laying around to see if its too much. Then when i find the right sQ, ill mount the amp behind the carpet in the trunk somewhere and build a fiberglass box in the corner. This way i can bring my clubs with me.

Hey, if you're still interested in swapping out your speakers, here's a website that lists the speaker sizes for the '09 TL. www.metraonline.com

To save you from going to the website, here's what that site lists.

Size, then Depth

Front Speaker 6.5, 3"
Front Tweeter 1, 1"
Rear Speaker 6.5, 3"
Rear Speaker 3, 2"
Center Speaker 3, 2"
Subwoofer 8, 3.5"

The more I listen to the ELS the more weaknesses I find. The biggest IMHO are the front door speakers and the lack of mid-lower bass. Therefore the sound in the backseats are overwhelmed by the bass from the sub while upfront I find the bass lacking. The sub's bass is drowned out when the vehicle is at speed, further diminishing the punch of the bass.

That said it is a pretty good stock system, but not as good as I originally thought. If I'm to upgrade I'd focus on the front speakers. Curious to see if anyone has tried any speaker upgrades yet.

I find the bass to be perfect for me. At times it seems too powerful. There is no way I would want to change anything. The system plays the source very faithful. I do not like manufactured bass. You want that kind of bass just get a one of those bass tubes. I prefer my sound as if I am in the audience and not inside the bass guitarist amp.

I should rephrase to say that the mid/low range bass is on the weak side, subwoofer compensates for the very low ranges but I find subwoofer bass artificial. I guess I'm comparing it to high-end home systems so it's not fair but nonetheless I do wonder how good the front door speakers are--I suspect they will be the first ones I'd upgrade if I ever do.

I swapped out the factory 6-1/2" ELS door speakers and rear speakers for a set of JL Audio's. The sound quality is much improved over the stock speakers, as expected. Sounds are much more crisp and did gain some base.

Nice, the rear deck or door speakers? Did you do it yourself or had it installed?Tweeters next or leaving it alone?

Changed out both the front door and the rear shelf speakers as a start. Had a local shop do it. Couldn't bring myself to defile it. Since it was the first 4th gen TL they'd seen it took three guys a half hour to figure out how to take the back seat out. I'm still toying with the idea of adding a sub and amp for a little more low end.

Bass rattle of the rear shelf fixed!

As some of you know the rear shelf will rattle with heavy bass from the sub.on the tech model. There is a TSB to fix this from acura. The fix is to put some felt on the rear deck. I went a step further and bought some dyna mat material that completely eliminated this problem. Not only that, the bass is more defined from the sub. I am not talking night a day difference but better. I bought boom-mat off of Ebay, and my dealer installed it for free. FYI.

iboon04,
I had one blown speaker. That's why I changed them out. I donated the other three to the guy that swapped 'em out for me. Sorry.

I dont have my TL yet, it should be arriving within the next couple of weeks.

Without having seen anything, is it possible to upgrade the sub/amp off the wiring that already run to the stock sub/amp? Or does a new Pwr, Gnd, Remote, and RCAs have to be run. Are there RCA jacks on the back of the stock deck? (I assume no) Or would I have to splice into the rear speaker wires for a signal?
