The worst day imaginable.

Yesterday was just the worst. I was backing out of an alley and the seat pillars were a blind spot (noticed this before) and I didn't see the 04 Impala coming. Clipped my rear end and ripped his back door off. Just had the car detailed earlier in the day. So upset. It set off the side curtain airbags as well.

On a side note, any way to disable the airbag warning in the display? It'll be a few weeks before the car is fixed and I hate to run around with this thing beeping every second. I'll post pics later today when I get it back from the body shop who's getting a parts list together.

the airbag controller has to be reset.
it's a certain standalone computer, i believe that resets SRS.

The car wasn't coming from behind, coming from the right. The seat pillars are somewhat of a blinds spot in this car. Never saw him coming.

Nobody was hurt.

Obviously can't reset the SRS until the new Airbags are installed or it will still go off. Just wondering if there was a workaround.

It's a shame you can't change the camera view on these cars (at least not on the 09-11, not sure about 12-14 models). My wife's old Pilot and her Ody have three different views...one of which is a wide view which would've helped in your case.

Good luck getting it taken care of!

Sorry to hear about your accident man. That sucks about the car, but glad you're alright.
I'm starting to see more and more cars with the rear cross traffic alert feature, and I never thought that provided much value until I hear about situations like this..

This is the exact situation where the cross traffic alert would've come in handy. I remember looking to the right as I was backing up and seeing nothing. Obviously, the car was hidden behind the seat pillars. I glanced back to the left and started backing out...Boom.

Wow, that really sucks, but like everyone previously said, material things can be replaced. Lives cant. I have this fear everytime I back out somewhere while i have the kids in the car.. Today a friend posted on Facebook how she witnessed a person go around a bus about to load kids and just missed hitting the 2 young kids that were about to walk out to the bus... SMH

wait.. you were going fast enough to rip his door off and set off your bags?

i assume when you are backing out,, you are going no more than 2-3 mph..

and also, as dark as my tint is.. in never have any issues with the pillar blind spot you speak of..

you just gotta be more cautious..

My 13 has the option to change the camera view, I think the 12-14 might as well.

When you guys are backing up, look in your mirrors and around you! Don't just rely on the camera.

Im giving OP the benefit of the doubt and assuming since he was reversing out of an ally he was probably only going under 5mph.

Chances are the Impala owner didnt notice someone reversing out of the alley or did and tried to beat them. Id assume the Impala was the one with all the momentum and OPs car might as well been standing still and just caught onto the impala body paneling.

Sorry to hear OP. I cant say how often while reversing slow I barely see someone last minute as they floor it past me figuring I will see them and stop. People are idiots. They have 100% more visibility than you and should stop instead of trying to speed past.
This is why I ALWAYS reverse into spots now. So when I am leaving I have full vision and can see the idiots that whip by trying to squeak past before you block them.

I feel like when some idiots see reverse lights they think "Shit they are about to get infront of me. I'll speed past since they are reversing slowly. They'll see me."
When in fact it should be the opposite.

That is correct, I was only going a few miles per hour. It was his momentum which removed his door, not mine. I was backing onto the street, as he passed, rear view camera didn't even come into play. As I was backing, obviously he wasn't behind me, he was coming from my right, and was behind me as I entered the street. He was probably going about 35.

Absolutely! This is the first car I've owned with a backup camera so out of habit it's secondary to what you mentioned above. Just like if I had a car with blind spot monitoring I'd still turn my head.

How do you adjust the view?

Does not sound like the case here but still a good reminder than whenever possible back into a parking area. The theory is we are backing into a controlled area, but we are pulling out into an uncontrolled area. As one poster said people try to race by cars pulling out to avoid the inconvenience of waiting the 10 seconds for the area to clear.

OP, glad it was only sheet metal and bags that were hurt. It is tough to look all directions at the same time, side mirror to backup cam to over the shoulder...

You don't, at least in the 09-11 models, all you can do is adjust them to your preference and set the dial in the center, not right or left, that way when backing out your mirrors will stay in their original setting.

push the nav center dial in (as if you were selecting something) and you'll see the menu pop up. If you rotate the inner part of the dial, you can increase/decrease the brightness.

I'm aware of the ability to change the brightness. I was wondering about actually "changing the view" as you mentioned. I didn't think there was a option to do that. I know you can adjust the lines as well. I doubt you can actually change the view/angle of the cam.

^^^If it's the same as the Hondas, just push the dial in while you're in reverse to cycle through the views.

The camera in the back of our cars is stationary. Pressing the dial only changes the brightness. Again, I wasn't even using the camera in this instance. I looked to the right, saw nothing, then looked to the left and started backing out. There he was. Never saw him. Obviously, I'll be more cautious in the future. But my accident would not have been avoided by using/not using the back up camera as the car wasn't in the camera's field of vision when I was backing. Only right at the moment he grazed me.
