windsheild -replacing due to rock chip

Hey I don't know if this is a dumb question. Acura says they use thicker or laminated acoustic glass in the front windsheild.

I got a rock chip, and it's created a crack. I want to replace the glass.

If I go to a private business to replace the glass, will they not use the right type of "acoustic glass"? specific to this Acura?
Does that mean I should go to the dealership to get the glas replaced?

I had my windshield replaced recently at a 3rd party shop. You can specify that you want them to get the OEM glass for your car.

I looked into glass for my 3G and it is special glass you can get OEM glass that has the sound deadening material in it, but it still is not cheap, I beleive for the 3G Acura glass was over $900 and OEM was still around $500-$600. I miss when Ilived in NY and you could get FULL GLASS coverage on the car.

Sorry to hear about this, Litt! So is this not covered by insurance in Calgary?

Well the interesting thing is that I have an auto glass insurance policy with a company called AMI that is seperate from my auto policy. I only have a $50 deductable and I can have as many windsheild replacements as I want during the year.

I have to check my policy or call AMI and see if they will just give me generic glass, or if they are required to give sound deadening glass if that is what I had.

I used to have a Honda Accord so I haven't run in to this issue before.

I have had to replace the windshield in my 07 two times and in both cases I was able to request OEM glass and my insurance company covered it twice. Good luck with it.

By the way I spoke to the autoglass insurance people. They said that if they don't have OEM glass, the other glass they use has to be the same type and quality. They also said that Acura uses extra thick vinyl strip across the bottom and top of the windshield to help keep out engine and wind noise.

If you are wondering I have a stand alone glass policy with AMI. It costs $150 per year but I can supposedly get my glass exchanged as often as needs to be. I usualy get rock chips every year in Canada so it seems to work out ok.
