Timing Belt Kit - OEM vs Aftermarket - 2012 TL AWD
Hi,
New here, doing my due diligence prior to getting the timing belt, water pump, tensioner replacement done. Currently have 126 K kilometers on the car, bought at 60 K in 2015.
Been quoted $1600 CDN at the Acura dealership, $1100,Honda (employee pricing) and $1100 to $1400 at three independent garages. Which I checked out as being capable of doing the job.
Is there an aftermarket part/kit suitable/preference vs OEM parts from the dealership. There is a potential savings of $200-$250 mentioned by one reputable garage owner if they used aftermarket parts.
He mentioned that there isn't much difference. I am not as concerned about pricing as I plan to keep the car around for awhile.
Any suggestions ? Would value your suggestions and experience on this.
Thanks.

man at that point, i'd just do 1100 at Honda. I stick with OEM parts for crucial things like TB/WP when possible.

I utilized an Aisin TKH002 kit for my last TB change 40k miles ago.
Aisin is a supplier to Honda for some water pumps and various other components.
It also utilizes Koyo bearings in the idler/tensioner pulleys.
Name brand roller bearings are important.
The TB is Mitsuboshi which is also a supplier to Honda for some belts.
I purchased at RockAuto.com but I think the kit is available at NAPA.
I plan to keep this vehicle for as long as possible.
But, as Thoiboi recommended, your best choice is Honda components.

This seems overpriced regardless but I guess it's CAD and not USD so the prices are going to be slightly different.

I made that post some time ago but you can still scoop up a full OEM kit for $255 shipped
That's USD though so ~$350 CAD, the ~750 in labor seems high to me though, especially with an employee discount.

Thank you thoiboi, Reorge and TheMuffinMan for your insight, responses and links. I guess I missed that link to the Honda parts as I did go through that thread earlier on timing belts. Appreciate the repost, in stock now.
Might go for that employee pricing if available(due to dealership warranty) as it was my nephew who got that quote for me. I will definitely go OEM.
Yes, labour is expensive at the dealership, up to $150/hr. I have been quoted $80 to $120/hr by other mechanics, might have to find a shop where I can bring my own parts.
I plan on getting the spark plugs done as well, anything else ? So much to read here. Great forums, lots of useful info.
Thanks again.

Is this too good to be true ? Genuine Honda OEM parts kit, less than the Aisin Kit.

As a general rule, folks here strongly recommend avoiding any such kits from Flea-Bay; even when they "appear" to be in OEM/Honda packaging, and have OEM/Honda markings on the parts, they are often counterfeit.

The part numbers are listed there as well, nothing is preventing someone from buying them from Majestic Honda for example. Here's the parts pictured straight from a Honda dealer which comes to ~$360
OEM Belt ($74) - https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com...ta-14400rcaa01
OEM Water Pump ($136) - https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com...da-19200rdvj01
OEM Idler Pulley ($48) - https://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com...ko-14550rcaa01

Not sure if I agree here, it's a seller based in the USA with 135,000 sales and 99.3% positive feedback. This isn't a random one review shop, the belt and pump are likely OEM (Honda stickers) and the pulleys are likely aftermarket.
