damn that sucks!!! where are you located? so some of us can avoid the area. I got ticketed once for tinted windows in Virginia. I had to take a picture of "my car" with the tint removed, and I got the ticket voided.

Each state is different, look at the attached link http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/ it will give you guidelines for the tint, plus if you have legal tint the shop should put their name and contact between the glass and the film in driver side, that is the proof of legality of your tint unless you do it darker than legal numbers which always has the risk of getting ticket.

Wow, so you broke the law and got caught and you're upset about it? Then you call the person enforcing the law an "Oinker"?

The oinker name was probably provoked from the smile from the officer. There are pigs out there, so sometimes the name is applicable. It is the law, but you'd think they can pull over more serious violations like the "a hole" that was flying down the freeway today cutting people off including myself.

Back to the tinting, what really sucks about tinting, is the cops can still pull you over and cite you. Such a ticket happened to a friend of mine with California legal tints. It took him 3 days to resolve and proof his case and had the ticket canceled, but at what expense?

Happens fairly often. I've seen dozens of these threads in 3G.

It pays to know what is and is not legal in your state, then make an informed decision based on risk.

Not surprised at the tinted tail lights. Changing/interfering with OE light output is illegal in most (all?) states.

It also pays to know the laws of states you will travel into. Virginia tint laws are written so they can be enforced on out of state cars. I know a few guys from Maryland that got nabbed by the VA State Police and my neighbor's brother from Florida got nabbed by the Town Police where we live.

Thats not NORMALLY the case. Usually the state where the car is registered is how the law is defined/applied.

The idea has something to do with reciprocity - an agreement between states that is basically a "we'll honor your laws, if you'll honor ours" kind of thing.

If I got an out of state tint ticket (say VA or NY or RI) on my NC registered car, I'd definetly fight it; I don't think the ticket will hold up in *most* cases.

Here's a question: I have 35% tints on my car. Does this mean that 65% of sunlight can get through, or that 35% gets through? I'm thinking it's the latter, 35% gets through, which means that mine (and probably 100% of the tints in the state of NY) are illegal. But just for confirmation, which is it?

Have a cop sign it off, if you know one.

A few states (NY, RI) allow 70%. Most OE glass is already 70% - 75%, so effectively they've made it illegal to have any tint at all.

NC allows a decent tint (35%) but then mandates an annual safety and emmissions inspection which includes the inspection of tinted cars with a meter (and an extra $10 charge). Makes it hard to get away with having dark tints unless you've got someone who will hook you up.

I just had ceramic tint installed last week. Even though its illegal to tint the front roll-ups in Cali, I'm willing to take the risk for the protection and heat reduction.

I know I took a risk on the tints and eventually get sited but dangggg the fine is like running a red light...almost $300...

But man the tint really helps on those HOT Days!

Where'd you get your tint done? I'd give the shop a call to see if they'd sign off on the ticket saying you "fixed" it. I'm curious to know how dark your tint is also.

I must admit, it does read funny since a few key words are missing. The shop needs a cop "friend" to sign off on the ticket...not a rare gem in LA.

Think of it as yet another of many "we don't want you here taxes" here in beautiful CA.

Be aware that Kalifornia is also one of those states that enforces their tint laws on out of state vehicles, too... it's just another way to feed the unlimited bottomless money pit in Sacramento. Ah yes, we can also celebrate that Ahnold just doubled our registration fees. But I digress.

I love it here.

Illegally tinted windows in California has not been a "fix-it" ticket since 2000, when the Judicial Council ended that option. Unlike other "fix-it" tickets for burned-out lights, or non-operational gauges due to age or usage, illegally tinted windows are wilfully installed by the vehicle owner.

And Arnold did NOT double our registration fees; he simply brought it back to the levels pre-2003 when as his first action as governor, he repealed the increase. That left a $4 billion hole in the state budget every year since. Hmm, our deficit this year was $24 billion....and $4 billion x 6 years = $24 billion. Thanks Arnold!

I have no sympathy for those who illegally tint. If you want to cool down your car, you can have clear tint applied to the front windows and front windshield, reducing UV transmission and protecting you and your car's interior.

If you are doing it to look cool, or hide the fact you are illegally using your cell phone, then you deserve a ticket.

(me and my walker getting off the soapbox now....)

Pre-2003 fees were criminally exorbitant. Period. Sorry, but when my registration fee is virtually double what it was last year (and now said vehicle is a year older and worth less $$), it's been doubled. I don't care how you slice it. Cutting the registration fees had NOTHING to do with the grotesque fiscal crisis we are facing, much of it a product of Grey Davis who couldn't sell a glass of lemonade and turn a profit. Not that Ahnold is doing much better.

If you like paying the ridiculous CA registration fees, fine; but I don't. The CA Govt has been an increasingly bottomless money pit since @ 1974. When states like Oregon and Nevada charge far less than CA for tags ($50 for two years in Oregon!) and have a far better quality of roads, something stinks... and it's Sacramento. They don't need more of my $$, they need a high colonic. But since this is an Acura forum I'll stop there.

For me, CA legal tint spec generally works for me. But if it didn't, I'd tint it more. I'm tired of being micromanaged & dictated to by 'the man' for the sake of more $$ revenue for City Hall, or Sacramento. FWIW- My wife's '07 Charger RT/RT had 35% all around, yes it looked 'cool', it WAS cool(er), and I never had an officer give it a second glance.

Sorry but if you have a walker, I'm nearly 6 ft under.
