Starter Troubles

Not really sure how to name this thread. I jump into the car, put my foot on the brake, press the "Start" button, and, nothing. Replacing the battery in the remote doesn't help. Inserting the fob into the receptacle doesn't help.
If I drive somewhere, exit the car, lock the doors with the remote, come back to the car later, the doors will unlock as soon as I'm near one of the front doors. In these conditions, the car seems to start every time. However, if I drive somewhere where I don't have to lock the doors (i.e. when I get home and pull into the garage), then jump into the car later, the doors will not unlock (because they are already unlocked) and the car refuses to start. I keep cycling through the ignition modes (i.e. "accessory", etc.) by pressing the start button over and over, and eventually it starts.
This is maddening. I'm dropping the car off at my indy tomorrow morning, but figured it wouldn't hurt to post it here in the hopes that someone will have already gone through this exercise and determined the cause.
Thanks
