Removing tint

When I bought my CBP, the previous owner had tinted it all the way around (except windshield, of course) in very dark tint. I always intended to remove the front windows, especially since anything forward of the driver is illegal here. But I've been pretty lucky for the past couple of years, and wasn't bothered by the police at all. And I do feel that the blackout has helped dissuade potential car thieves.

I wasn't bothered by police until the middle of August, that is, when I got my first tint ticket (with a failing to produce insurance ticket on top...the renewal was 4 days prior, and the new pink card was sitting on my desk at home). I can't have helped that the cop saw me give the finger to the guy in front of me (who I thought was brake-testing me, but was in fact slowing rapidly because he saw the cop 2 seconds before I did).

Then, just last week, I was pulled over again. Only got a warning, but didn't like the fact that the constables approached my car with their hands on the butts of their service pistols (which I can't help but attribute to the darkness of the tint).

So, I've decided it should come off...front windows anyway. Besides, a little greenhouse effect in an Alberta winter can't hurt. In the spring, I may re-tint the fronts, but with something a bit less dark than what I have now (though it does look sweet as it sits).

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to getting the tint off clean? I really don't like the idea of messing around with ammonia.

During the daytime on a sunny day let the car sit with the heater on full blast for about 20 minutes. Then peel the tint off, the glue should come off with the film. I have seen a few people do this.

or u could use a heatgun/hairdryer. leftover glue residue comes off very easily with razor and steamer if you happen to have one.

Thanks, however that won't work. Not in an Alberta winter. Plenty of sun, but cold too.

+1 on the steamer. Start at the corner. Once the corner bubbles the stuff will fall off. It takes the glue and leaves no residue.

You could take it to the tint shop and have them charge you $100+ to take the tint off. Or you can go buy a fabric steamer for about $30-$40 bucks and just take your time steaming them off.

I have removed tint 2 times total and taking my time on both I finished it in about 1-2 hours each. If the tint is not some cheap shit tint no razor is needed. And you definitely dont want to put a razor to the rear windshield you might mess up the defroster.

Start by steaming the whole window and then try to peel a corner of the tint up with your nails. Once you've got a little edge up you start steam that spot up and start pulling the tint down slowly. You should not pull too hard or fast cause it may leave glue if you do.

Be careful working with the steamer as it gets real hot. After you've pulled off all the tint you can use some goo gone and wipe down all the windows in case of any glue left on the windows. I was able to do it on my first try with no experience whatsoever just took my time.

You can also youtube window tint removal and you can see what I'm talking about

Do you do any work on your car yourself? It seems you love throwing money away by paying someone to do everything for you. Are you afraid you'll break a nail?

OP - I've removed tint before just by starting at the corner and pulling slowly. Some goo gone and a razor blade will get rid of any glue residue.

Funny how the Mounties are so up-tight about rule breakers. Here in Oregon you wouldn't even get a second look.

I'm with you on that...I don't mess with tint, paint, or bodywork either. The exception is removing tint as that's a pretty easy job and hard to mess up.

I just had to give you shit because I've seen a few other posts where you suggest paying someone to do the work.

Fortunately in FL they're pretty relaxed about it. The only issues I've had in the past were with my windshield being tinted (35%), and I've had 5% - 15% everywhere else with no problems.

I dont mind giving quality workers my business.

Kid had his own mobile tint business and did all my windows and tail lights (all red w/ rev cut outs) in my garage. Fed him and tipped him really well. He did a great job.

windex contains amonia that helps remove the adhesive glue left over. or use gooBegone. you need a straight razor with a handle (looks like screwdriver that holds a straight edge razor).

heat it up and start scraping it off, spray some windex and the adhesive glue will come up pretty easily.
