Passing Emissions tests
Passing Emissions tests
Hey ya'll just made this account and I'm still new to the world of cars and trying to learn stuff on my own so if I say anything dumb bare with me. Anyway I have a 4g TL and my plan for the exhaust was going to be rv6 pcds and xlr8 j pipe but the issue is the pcds cause they wont pass emissions tests btw I live in PA. I want the pcds i think they just sound a bit better then the hfpc and they are alot cheaper too. Is there anyway i can cheat the emissions test and pass it without them throwing any codes? Also side note i plan on getting a better rear sway bar and was looking for suggestions for that as well. This forum has helped me out so much in planning on what I want to do and ya'll know what your doing. Thank you.
as long as the car does not throw a check engine light, you're good...
the PCD's come with defoulers...the defoulers act as a spacer for the 02 sensor...instead of the 02 sensor sitting inside the exhaust stream, the defouler plus 02 sensor sits above the exhaust stream

Yeah, defoulers will keep you from throwing codes, but at that point you'd also have to hope the inspector doesn't physically start looking for things. I dunno how anal PA is about their inspections.
I failed NJ inspection because they started using cameras under the car to look for 3rd cats, which mine doesn't have because of the XLR8 j-pipe... No codes thrown since the 3rd cat isn't monitored, they just immediately failed me when a cat was obviously missing.

In hindsight, I was a dummy by going to a state MVC/DMV run inspection center instead of paying a private facility, some of whom just check OBD2 codes and move on with life. I actually went to the exact same state run inspection facility with the exact same exhaust and passed 2 years ago, so I didn't expect it to be a problem this time.

The V2 is 'long', replacing the 3rd cat.
I had the XLR8 V2 on my car when I bought it, and luckily I have not had any issues with NC emissions. I do go to private inspection places. I tried the RV6 PCD's for about a month, but for me they were way too loud with my already loud XLR8 catback + V2 combo. Plus they made my car stink. So I went back to stock pre-cats and haven't worried about testing or needing to buy stock in Advil.

Their V1 jpipe is 'short', same as oem length utilizing the factory 3rd cat.

you're going to get the very same answers, because the questions are subjective to the user who is using the equipment.
we can refer back to the story of Goldilocks and the three bears.
Mamma bear tried small, medium and large bed.
the small bed was too small.
the large bed was too large.
the medium bed, however, was juussst right.
you're asking very subjective questions...

so, if you gonna go large, go large.
who cares if it smells like fuel?
who cares if it's loud?(other than your neighbors)
although, now that i have ran the PCD's for more than 7 years, I dont have the funny fuel smell any more.

these are all very convincing points and will definitely being do it

I'm also in NJ, just recently got an 09 TL and I'm looking at some options for a j-pipe that removes the third cats. Were you able to get the emissions inspection done with the j pipe on through a private inspector? Would like to be able to get the car inspected without having to re install the stock j pipe lol
