My 2011 Acura TL needs a new engine!

I bought a 2011 TL with tech package on December 30, 2010. About three weeks ago I noticed small oil spots (about an inch in diameter) where I usually park the car.

I made an appointment with acura dealer I bought the car from to have it checked. They looked at the car and said it is leaking oil but could not determine from where. They said they will put a special dye in the oil which they will use to determine the cause/source of the leak. They put the dye in and tell me to drive it for a week and come back.

So I drive it for a week. I come back and leave the car with them two weeks ago. The service rep calls me back a couple of days later and tells me they are having a hard time determining where the leak is coming from but are working on it.

Finally they say that the engine has a very small crack. The service rep tells me instead of fixing the crack they will replace the whole engine.

I'm asking them to give me an extended warranty because of this. Am I asking for too much, I don't think so. They said they will contact Acura and see what they say!

You are smart to ask for it and hopefully Acura will accomodate you.

Good luck, neighbor.

Sounds like a plan...and no you aren't asking to much. That should be expected from you. After all it will be a new engine.

Damn, Winston sold you a lemon! Jk. Sorry to hear your problem. Yeah, getting extended warranty sounds like a great idea since engine replacement is massive job. For the loaner you get, don't settle for a TSX. Demand only a TL, MDX, or RL since you're going to be without your car for a long time.

I would like to know how and where the crack occured ...
Perhaps it is leaking anti freeze into the oil supply or vice versa.

Anyway ... Crack Kills !!

Which dealer in town are you taking it to? Gillman, John Eagle, Champion or Sterling McCall?

It sure seems like Winston sold me a lemon!! I have had just about all their cars (TL,TSX, ZDX). I have a MDX right now!!

I'm not sure about where the crack is, the service rep and his manager tried to explain it to me but all I know is I need a new engine!! That's why I'm trying to get the an extended warranty is for any unknown issues that i might have in the future!!

You have had the car less than 2 months and it has been in the shop for sometime. I would push for a new car and let them replace the engine and resell it.

^ in NY state... Lemon Law states 30 days out-of-service, and they must replace. dealership would rather replace for you, instead of you filing lemon law... once you file that, the car becomes a "buyback" status on carfax, and people will know why

I had a 1993 Mazda that needed heads at 5K miles and fought to get an extended warranty on the engine. They initially refused I sold the car and they called me back saying they would cover the engine for and extended period. I would push them hard, but my guess is after dealing with ACS in the past they will not.

Holy crap .... a new engine on a 2011 ! Hmm... glad I purchased the extended warranty on my 2010. It's good for 100,000 miles or 6 years. Only $4.00 a month added to my car payment...
Good luck with your TL.

I would push for a new vehicle first and the extended warranty second. To me this kind of problem is unacceptable on a brand-new car. Keep us posted as what happens.

The acura service manager called me today and said that they are willing to give me an 8 year 120,000 mile acura care warranty with 0 deductable. I think I will take it and stop pushing for a new vehicle!

Nice! Make sure that warranty is bumper to bumper and covers everything (not just drive train).

They said everything that is covered under the original 50,000 mile warranty will be covered until 120,000 miles!

Can't ask for better than that - much better than even a new car. Nice to know your dealer and Acura took good care of you.

What about depreciated value, Rockets007? Are you planning on keeping the car for a while? AKA Drive it into the ground? Some potential buyers see the "engine replacement" on your dealer records and run for the hills. Just something to keep in mind. Hope all works out for you!!! Sounds like they're treating you right!

I tend to keep me cars for atleast 10 years. So by that time it should not matter!

Depreciated value was exactly one of the arguments I used with them to get the extended warranty! Ofcourse I didn't tell them that I have no plans of selling the car for atleast a decade!!

Bingo, that's what I would be asking for and whining so much would get. Also, you should be happy with a TSX loaner, as we in Canada get CSX's (nice Civic).

Thumbs up

That's one of Acura's finer points. They usually take care of their customers, if they are at fault.

You know 8 yrs/120,000 miles is a great (honest) deal... I mean you could go after them like a shark, but there is no need in this case... Who do you usually deal with at John Eagle? Thom, Bush?

BTW - Have you met the "new" accessories girl there? She used to cut the owner's hair... nice lady, but has a large "on the job" learning curve...lol

Glad to see the whole thing worked out. Be sure to thank the dealer for covering you, and offer to fill out any service questionnaires or something similar. Building a rapport with your dealer might come in handy one day

My service advisor is Mark. Tony (service manager) got me the extended warranty!

Will have to keep an eye out for the "new" accessories girl! Is she oriental?

oriental? really?, not everyone in TX is ignorant.
Get this promised warranty and details in writing. You wouldn't believe the differences you can find years later when you are dealing with Acura corporate pertaining warranty coverages and with dealers. been there.
personally I would have pushed hard for a new car, but if you're happy.

Huh? Acura is taking care of the problem right away. The OP can't push lemon law until the 3rd incident of the same problem. I don't think any amount of pushing at this point would garnish him a new car. Now if the next engine crankcase is cracked too...

I am not arguing that the OP wouldn't want a new one, I know I would not be happy that my new car had an issue like that but knowing that it's an isolated incident helps.
