Saw a few of these additives while at my mechanic. Thought additives were a no-no for our cars. Any of these products recommended by the good folks on this site?

most of them won't make a difference if you are using quality oil and doing the maintenance as needed. With SH-AWD 3.7L engines, I don't recommend going over 3K miles on an oil change unless you get it tested by a good lab.

I'm in a 2012 3.5 TL. Using mobile 1 0w-20 right now. Next oil change going with 5-30. Every 5k miles.

Oil additives = no absolutely not. If the oil needed them it would already have them in it.

Gasoline additives = yes please. Good idea to run injector cleaner every 10 fillups or so...

I have used stuff like marvel mystery oil for piston-soaking purposes, but I only briefly run the engine with it and the oil gets changed right after.

Do you drive with marvel or just idle then change? you ever put it in tank?
thinking on my drive to california next month I will put some chevron or liqumoly injector cleaner.

Fast fact: in all my cars, I would put half qt of trans fluid in oil before change. Grand am 255k miles. Grand marquis 305k miles. 2000 acura tl 260k miles.

There are good oils from Valvoline and Pennzoil that are more focused towards older engines and cleaning. Just stick to those.
For fuel additives just use any p.e.a based cleaner once or twice a year. I have been hearing good things about Valvoline Restore and Protect fuel system cleaner. I might try that next time.

I don't know about other Pennzoil products, but I absolutely do not recommend Ultra Platinum for engines with low levels of internal oil splash, such as the J35/37A/Z, .

I've been using Mobile 1. I read it gets better reviews than Royal Purple. Though I read Amsoil is the best? Should be at $295 a quart.

For a piston soak, I pull the plugs and pour some directly down the plug tubes, then turn the engine over by hand, rinse and repeat a few times, and then let it sit for a day.

Next day I turn the car on, let it get up to temp, and then shut it off and do a normal oil/filter change.

Tons of smoke comes out of the exhaust when starting the engine for the first time after doing this.

Here is roughly what Pennzoil did under my valve covers after three oil changes at 4,000-mile intervals.
My sludges were black and slightly transparent.

B12 works excellently with this method; however, it is a critical procedure that must be performed using a borescope and requires a minimum of two days to complete.

WOW and it wasn't like that before I imagine??

I'm already annoyed because I got some PUP because of that rebate promo they were running, but they denied my rebate for no reason. Now I have this oil that I overpaid for AND am not sure if I wanna use... although maybe it would be fine on the K series.

You are right; K-series engines feature a chain that generates significant oil splash, preventing the oil from stagnating on the surface.
Before using Pennzoil, everything looked like this—it’s a shame I don’t have the original photos of the sludges.
