I think I need a Propellor Shaft!!

So, i'm pretty sure i need a new Propellor Shaft on my 2012 TL SH-AWD 6mt. It's a squealling noise at higher speeds. I had the same exact sound on my 2010, which turned out to be the Propellor Shaft. So i'm certain it's the same issue. The only difference, is this time it's not 100% consistant. I guess maybe because it's now starting to go, and i'm sure it will get more consistant as it gets worse. Anyways, i've got an appointment at 12:30pm today to have this verified. Hopefully i can replicate the problem then. I heard it on the way into work this morning, but you know how cars can have a mind of their own at times. Pretty rediculous that this has been a known problem since the 4g TL came out, and STILL on a 2012 model, the problematic part is still not redesigned or fixed.

Tips from my experience with that before I got it warrantied (DCH Heart Acura), was I could hear it mostly at low speeds, it was easier to hear when I was in an area that reflected sound (driving between buildings, a mountain path, etc), it easier to hear it when you have a steady foot (cruise control) and aren't accelerating. The way I got a tech to hear it was by driving with him in a somewhat empty area with building on both sides, put the music up to 10, got the car to 35 and when I began to hear it I turned off the music and the whining noise became blatant. Another test I saw them do was putting the car on a lift 2-3 feet off the ground and have the car going at a steady speed.

You're welcome, try to figure out what conditions are necessary to provoke the whine, i hate going to the dealer and being told we can't replicate X.

Well, my luck.....couldn't replicate the problem while i was at the dealer. Funny enough, on the way back to work, it started up again!!! frustrating. I recorded the sound, but not sure if that will be enough for them. I called them back, and advised that i will be driving the car around until the sound starts, and will drive right into the dealer. He said to give him a call when i'm on the way, and they will have someone ready to listen.

^That stinks. Are you able to post a link to the upload for the recorded sound? Is it an obvious high squeal noise?

Now I'm starting to get worried my propellor shaft will go bonkers.

Had the same issue with my wife's 12 Advance. She heard the squealing noise, but each time I drove it, nothing. A few thousand miles later, I final heard it. I had a oil change appointment scheduled and I called and added this issue. Right away they said it sounds like the propeller shaft. At first I did not know what that was, I thought I could drive the car in the water, but was advised not to. Sure enough, it was the propeller shaft and they replaced it. I don't know how they tested it, but it's fixed now. Good luck.

well, as i suspected it was the shaft. I took it for a drive, and imediatley heard the noise again. Drove right to the dealer, and sure enough the tech heard the noise. Confirmed it was the Shaft, and conveniently they had one in stock. Suprise eh, it is a known problem for them to be stocking this item. Had it replaced within an hour while i wait. Haven't driven the car much since, but i'm sure it's fixed.

TLBullet, that is exactly what happens, sound stops when you slow down. Your shaft is in it's way out. Keep an eye out for it, and make sure you get it resolved under warranty. Apparently it's easly a cool grand to replace.

Lol mine has one in their inventory also but the service manager swears they've never seen the problem. I don't get why they lie. An informed customer is their worst enemy.

I've noticed mine will quit if I hit large bumps like train tracks but it comes back pretty quick.

Dealer replaced the entire drive shaft or just a hanger bearing?

Yes, my 2012 sounds like a high-pitched whistle or whine. It starts around 20/25 mph and gets louder/higher-pitched up until 40/45 mph. I can only hear it when I have my foot on the accelerator. I heard mine as soon as I brought it home from the dealer and can hear it every time I drive the car if I pay attention for it, but usually I can't hear it over the music, so it doesn't bother me that much. I plan on mentioning it to the dealer at my first oil change.

Entire shaft, alteast that's how it reads on the invoice. "replace Propellar Shaft", and it also lists a few bolts etc.

Just the propeller shaft assembly itself will set back a cool $860, and there will be labor charge on top of it.

Raises more questions than answers

What is the root cause? Random bad lots of shafts over the years? Did Honda change suppliers? It this just manual transmissions? It this related to driving style? Most likely bearing failure in the universal joints - correct? Can the bearings be replaced? Is this is a 4 year/50,000 parts? If you are out of warranty could a custom universal shaft shop fix you up?

I have the same frustrating problem and sound. It's so intermittent that I haven't been able to catch it with the dealership. I've made two appointments that have been cancelled because the whistling noise goes away.

Xrays. ... I had same issue. Seemed to occur when car was "warmed" up a little more and driving around 45 mph. Mine started up again other day, i calld dealer and took it in to hav tech ride w me. He heard it. Thinks it could be bearings or drive shaft (prop shaft?). I hav appoinment today for repair.

Funny, I had exactly the same issue, and I'm pretty sure it was propeller shaft, I tried recording it, even isolating the frequencies using audio software... but dealer probably though I was nuts. And yes, the sound was very annoying and frustrating!

Just got my car bak from Acura. They Actually heard the "noise" and agreed that it was the driveshaft. They orderd part and had it completed in 2days. My service rep said it was first one he has done on TL. I was wondering how many tL's have this issue and are just going unnoticed??? It is a faint "squeel" for those..hoping if any members need it they get it done b4 warranty expires. Lower ur radio and listen!!!

Took my TL into the dealer today and he told me that the TL doesnt have the propeller shaft issue and that it was only the RL. Well he will learn from me when he hears it. Of couse this morning when it was cold, I had no issue. When warmed up....yep...Now if I can only catch the sound when I have the car at the dealer...

I refered to it as propellor shaft and serv advisor said its a driveshaft....
He can call it whatever shaf he wants. Just fix it please. Chiptouz: drive it for few miles around 40mph ...that when i heard mine the most. Any faster and the wind noise is too loud. Any slower than about 35 and i wouldnt hear it. Good luk.

So how many propeller shafts have been replaced? Maybe need to start a petition to get Acura to an provide an explanation of the problem. Further, what is the population of potential cars and what is the corrective action. They may be able to manipulate one owner at a time but a list of 30 owners asking for an explanation etc... would more formidable.
