How's the automatic transmission on a 4G SH-AWD?

We all know that 2G and 3G TL's have horrendous auto transmissions... I was wondering how's the 4G auto transmission holding up? I had a manual 3G that I just sold and i'm still hesitating for my next car.

Thanks

Here's a pic of my 3G

In my case, I've had the tourque converter replaced twice and prop shaft once . I bought the car with 41,000 miles and I currently have 67,000.

I seem to be a lucky one....(knock on WOOD), I have not had any issues. 2nd owner, had 31000 when got it now has 98000. I did the software update 2yrs ago. I don't have any of the prob a lot of owners talk about. Do a search on 4G Torque converter issues.

I have a 2012 auto ... I've had to replace the torque converter once @ around 60,000 kms.
Since then, the car does jerk a bit accelerating uphill at a very low speed. Spoke to the dealer about that and they said that 'it is normal' - at least I still don't have the same issue I had prior to replacing the TC. Anyone else experience the uphill jerkyness?

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this car - its a fun drive in all weather conditions.

stay away bro - the 6 spd auto in the 4G is a complete crap shoot. Even if you get a decent one without TC/Propeller shaft issues the logic is horrendous. The last 2 years I had mine I kept it in Sport mode using paddle shifters just to tolerate it. Truly a great car, great motor, great AWD, great interior, great stereo, so-so aesthetics and a SHIT transmission.

Sitting at 8900 miles and I think it's great. Sport mode definitely smooths out the ride and shift points. If you can get a manual, do it.

Best feature is the hill assist in both auto and manual.

I think we on the forums often lose perspective. There were almost 70 thousand 2012-2014 TLs produced, with some fair percentage being SH-AWD AT. So the statistically few that show up mentioned on the forum as bad, vs the vastly greater number of people who never complain because they have nothing to complain about, are more the exception then the rule.

I concur. I think H/A decided to get-it-right. BTW: I have 57k miles.

Also, although not specified by Acura you should replace the inline fluid filter as part of routine maintenance (~30k-50k miles). It gets clogged (Ref: TSB B14-049). There are several threads about this topic. Search.

On the other hand, i'm sure there are a lot of people that have transmission issues and are not on acurazine.

I went to see one today and the guy said the transmission had issues but it was fixed. I asked him what was exactly fixed, he couldnt tell me. I'll call the dealer on Monday but yeah, if its the torque converter it will go bad again. The car is amazing though. I'll try a M37 on monday.

Acurazine has a small number of TL owners. It's hardly a definitive representation of the transmission issues on the TL.

It's the way the transmission is programmed that is causing the issue, the software update tried to address the issue by holding the fourth gear longer in the five speed auto and the fifth gear longer in the six speed.

It still gets in the gear before top gear too early but gas consumption will be affected if they address that.

When the car is driven in Manual mode this issue does not present itself.

Compared with the more modern transmissions you're seeing it feels pretty old. I have the 6mt. Idk how I like that either lol, its pretty finicky sometimes, I know I know how to drive stick but sometimes it makes me feel like I dont.

Here is my objective evidence that the issues with the transmission, while serious to them personally, are not as widespread as some on the forum might lead you to believe:

I am certainly interested to see if someone has other data to the contrary that is more then merely anecdotal.

SH-AWD has 2 big issues, Torque Converter and the Propeller shaft whistle.

The Torque converter software was updated and warranty extended to 10 yrs 105K for affected cars. Change the fluid every 15K and you'll be good.

No idea what causes the whistle but a few folks have gotten a drive shaft replaced here thoughout their ownership.

Other than that, great piece of work! Also be sure to keep an eye on the oil level! 3.7L's tend to burn oil and some consume A LOT. Acura is replacing motors due to this.

Got my PDS change at 48,000mi yea that can be a issue. but I'm not sure if the 2012 and up had that issue.

I put 144k miles on my 2009 TL AWD and only did regular maintenance. Timing belt, water pump, and valve adjustment at 136k and that was it, no issues other than a couple speakers being replaced. Transmission was solid and the best 5 speed by Acura I've driven IMO. Recently bought a 2010 TL AWD which seems to be as reliable as my '09.

Not sure why Acura's 3.7L V6 is being condemned by some users for oil consumption issues. Maybe I'm lucky, but I've had 3 of their 3.7's and none have burned oil. The 6AT in my MDX is perfect, even better than the 5AT in my TL, so I'd assume the 6AT TL is just as good.
