Hit and Hit Hard

Last week I got hit by a BMW going at least 60 as he blew the light while I was completing my left turn.

I have a 2010 TL SHAWD 6MT with 67k miles on her preliminary estimate is $13,500 and they know it will go up from there. I was hit in the rear left side, right behind the wheel and it bent the whole rail to the left, at least thats what the body shop said.

Any suggestions on what the value of the car should be when trying to accept a totalled car payout from the insurance company?

Thanks,

Gregg

Most important thing is that you're ok. So sorry to see this, must have been one heck of an impact. Try to look up the value on KBB and take it from there. Good luck.

Is that were you ended up after the impact or was that a safe spot off the road you drove to? How did the TL hold up, any serious injuries? Luckily the impact was on the rear and not the driver side, but a 60mph impact can cause serious dmg.

It depends on your insurance company. I have State Farm and they've totaled out my car twice, both times they made me very fair offers.

Do you have a dashcam to show the BMW ran a red light? Hopefully the driver tells the truth but you never know.

Check out this jackass BMW

That is a bummer, man.
I missed being totalled about 2 weeks ago, by about 10 seconds.
I'm still pissed about it.
I was approaching a green light and some jerk went flying through on the red (in some little shitbox crapcan) at about 60 mph. If I had been slightly earlier he would have got me right in the driver's door. The light was not changing, it was in the middle of the cycle. Some people have no regard for what they're doing.

KBB is accurate anymore nowadays... most used car dealers rely on nadaguide.com

All,

I walked away from this with only sore muscles. That is where the car ended up after jumping a curb. And no I did not have a dash cam.

On top of everything else the car now has no gas in it, but had at least a quarter to a half tank before the impact. So a new gas tank may need to be added to the supplimental.

I have State Farm and we will see what they say. The exhaust system needs to be replaced and they said that there is some damage to the suspension. They can't even tell if the AWD is damaged at this point.

Looking at cars.com there are only 34 6mt Tls from 2010 to 14 for sale in the US. From 20k to 33k. The 20k cars have almost 100k miles on them.

I would definitely be preparing for them to total it. There will be plenty of suspension damage to add on with hopping the curb. Glad you're okay.

I figured OP could use it as a starting point, in my experience dealers today flop all over with what they claim to use. I remember years ago dealers would laugh when you would mention Edmunds in regards to value.

Just 3 weeks ago I was getting ready to trade in my sons 11 Accord and I checked the trade in value with KBB, TrueCar, and another site that I can't remember right now and they were all within a few hundred of each other.

Of course the dealer came in well below what everyone listed and when I told him no deal because he is at min $2,000 below the trade value (not retail or private party) he tells me the use Edmunds for their trade in values? So I looked up the value on my phone in front of him and Edmunds value was right in line with the others.

But thanks for tip on nadaguide.com I'm going to check it out..

Most dealers use the Mannheim guide. That is what they would have to pay for a car like your at auction.

Most dealers estimate your trade in as low as possible. They assume you know less than them and haven't done your due diligence.

Insurance companies total the car at 70% of the blue book value. A $10,000 valued car totals at $7000 but the insurance pays you the market value of your car. Glad to hear you are ok and good luck with everything.

so here is a status update... still working on a price for the car. They tell me that they FMV for the car and then compare my 6mt to Autos and they offered me 17,400 for my '10 6mt with 67k miles. I explained to them that this was an MT not an Auto and you cant compare them. They came back at me with almost another $500 and I am still telling them no. they found the two cheapest 6mts on cars.com within 1107 miles and then added back $.035 per mile to make it equivalent to my car. I countered by taking all 9 TL's for sale within that same radius and averaging the price and mileage and then adjusted up for the 5000 miles less that my car had then average.

This comes out to a little over $20k. I think based on what I see my car was worth closer to 22k, but will settle for the 20k. so now it is back in their court. Then they called me and asked if I would sign over the car as totaled so it can be removed from the body shop to I guess the chop shop to be parted out. I told them that since we had not settled on a price for the total, that I was not signing off on the car yet.

The Retail section is what you want. You also have a rarer color combination and upgraded wheels. The wheels alone from acura were 4K new! That should add at least a grand!

Also looks like your tires were fairly new too and you probably just did the 60K maintenance too. Low mileage adds about $400, but by the software it's minus $800 for the 6MT. It's considered something that detracts as cars sit on dealer lots longer.

Also can't tell if you had the A-Spec body kit but that's also $2K retail installed, 1K in parts.

csmeance,

thanks for this information. When subtracting the cost of the 6MT I was pretty darn close based on current sales in the market.

I bought the car Certified used from a dealership in Charleston SC in '12. I did not know that I had upgraded wheels, just assumed it came that way. as far as the A-spec body kit, what would I look for on that?

Thanks,

Gregg

Glad you made it out well, make sure to see your doctors in a timely manner!

Wasn't sure as what came factory, thought they looked nicer than what factory would be.

If it's certified it carried an extra year of factory warranty and 12K miles + 7yr/100K powertrain warranty;about $1200+ dollars for a warranty like that the last time I asked for one when buying my 4G TL
