How much quicker will the 6spd auto be?
Hello all. I'm a 3G owner of an 06 TL and love the car. I now have 105k miles on her and will probably be in the mkt for a new car about this time next year. I'm anxiously waiting for the 2012 MMC and I am anticipating a 6 spd auto and of course a new face. I am hoping for more performance and I want to see the car accelerate quicker. So the question is do you think the 6spd auto will bring the car down to the mid 5's 0-60? Thx
I copied this from my other post in this thread. It compares the speed and weight of the MDX pre and post 6AT. I hope this helps!
Edmunds InsideLine results:
07 mdx with 5 speed auto 4578lb 0-60=8.1s 1/4=16.0s
10 mdx with 6 speed auto 4623lb 0-60=7.1s 1/4=15.3s

Well since most mags manage to get a 5.9-6.0 0-60, it would be a good bet that the 6AT TL should run numbers close to the 6MT. So we're hoping for a 5.2-5.3 0-60 and a 13.7-13.8 1/4 mile. That's with the current 3.7 engine @ 305hp/273 lbs tq.
If you look at MDX numbers as well as RL numbers improvements with the 6AT, we can expect anywhere from a 0.5-0.8 Improvement in speed times and a gain of maybe 1mpg, which is quite good actually. Great speed improvements and 4-5% gain in FE with just the addition of a 6th cog is quite a feat IMHO.
Personnaly, I would appreciate a small power bump in the true Type-S fashion with 320-325hp/280+ lbs tq. I would be a very happy camper for a good number of years.
We all have to be patient and wait!

Vinnier, better go back and check your numbers. Road and Track and Car and Driver both got 5.2 with the 6MT. Automobile got a 5.5.
C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 5.2 sec
R&T Test Results: http://www.roadandtrack.com/var/ezfl...ff5f424d86.pdf
Fastest published (i.e., magazine) time for the TL-S that I have seen is 5.5; R&T got a 5.7 when they tested the TL-S 6MT against the G35 and IS350.
The SH-AWD is a harder accelerating car, but not by a lot.
The numbers you're quoting look like those recorded for the 5 speed Auto SH-AWD.

The 5AT has had many inconsistencies but the best published to date is from R&T with a 0-60 of 5.9 and a 1/4 mile of 14.4@99. That's pretty respectable for a car that doesn't brake torque, is as haevy as it is, and only has a 5AT. I think the ET is roughly the same as the TLS 5AT but the 0-60 and trap are better in the SH.

I believe C&D got the fastest for the TLS 6MT of 0-60 in 5.5 and a 1/4 mile of 14.1@101. There's a lot that goes into these outcomes but when you use best vs best it's a resonable comparison.

To be honest with you, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a significant bump in fuel economy with the 2012 TL. In addition to the expected six-speed auto, since Acura is changing the bumpers also, it presents an opportunity for them to refine the aerodynamics of the car which can also improve fuel economy. Additionally, if Acura applies the same improvements to the TL engine that Honda has to the 2011 Accord engine, then that will also help fuel economy greatly. If Honda can get the 4560 lb, 8 passenger Odyssey to get 28 mpg with a 6-speed auto, I know they can do just as well with the TL and I am expecting it.

I think the 3rd gear is entirely too long. Wouldnt be bad for a turbo set up, but the way it is now it needs an improvement. Everytime I put it in "S" i paddles shift so I dont worry about the car not shifting for me.

One thing to keep in mind...the 5AT in sport mode stays on 3rd gear until about 100mph before shifting to 4th. Very impractical...and quite a few of us 4g owners are disappointed with it. I had a 6AT zdx loaner last week...and it works perfectly in S mode as you get the shift to 4th for a more useful experience. With the 5AT staying on 3rd for VERY long I have not found a way to actually use it effectively...so bottom line unless I'm willing to keep shifting back and forth between D and S...I might as well just stay on D and floor it when I need to.
Agreed...at the end of the day we have an S mode that is pretty much useless...unfortunately.
Most of the magazines test the automatic TL at 60 in the low six range, about 6.3 or so. I'd say the new one will be at least a full half second quicker when you look at averages to averages. So I'm thinking more like 5.7-5.8 seconds at most, with a couple that might get a 5.6 or something of that nature.
I too am awaiting to see what improvements are made to the MMC.

thx for the educated responses. I want to be loyal to Acura because my 3G has been bullet proof and I am really trying to make myself believe that I need to buy another one for my next car. But I am disappointed with the current powertrain set up and fugly grill. Hoping the '12 will change that. Otherwise M37 or A6.
