Help with worn camshafts

Hi Guys,

I need some help with Replacing the worn camshafts, I am very new to this so any support is appreciated. So basically this is a new to me car with 200k miles, my engine was ticking a lot along with a check engine light for bank 2 catalytic converter. From searching the forums and youtube I realized the camshafts were probably the culprit, long story short I decided to open up the back valve cover to try and take care of this myself (never worked on engine before!). So the insides looked really clean, and after removing the rocker arm assembly, I saw the worn lobe, the rocker arm directly above was pitted and clearly looks like it needs replacement as well. However, there was another rocker arm with a streak on the side, other than that it looks fine, so my question is, what would indicate the rocker arm is bad and should also be replaced?

Initially, I wasn’t going to open the front valve cover thinking it was just the back but decided to anyway, am I glad I did. First the middle coil came out with half of it covered in oil (realized the middle seal in the valve cover was broken as well), what is the cause of this? Next think I notice, the front is covered in varnish, completely oppose of the back which looked new, how does this happen? I saw two lobes that are badly worn but only one rocker looked pitted. Also, need to figure out the part#’s for the rockers.

very dirty compared to the rear section

2 worn lobes

i guess i answered one of the questions, oil was in the spark plug due to the broken seal on the valve cover.

That is some serious wear, probably associated with a previous owner's running the car low on oil and/or not changing the oil frequently enough. (I assume this car never had the extended warranty piston/ring replacement). Now that you're in there, and assuming you intend to keep the car, I'd go ahead and replace everything that is out of spec (see the factory service manual for specs).

Good luck. Kudos to you for taking something like this on. If you plan to do the work yourself, make sure you have the service manual available.

The seal is broken because

You need a valve cover repair or replacement.

Replace camshafts and worn rockers. Initially, this whole problem was due to the fact that the valves were not adjusted, so that this problem does not happen again, be sure to adjust the valves.

thanks guys, so basically need to order 2 cam shafts and 2 rocker arms, I will have to remove the broken gasket on the valve cover to see if it's damaged.

One question, the service manual calls for removing the crankshaft pulley, timing belt and everything. Can I not just remove the tensioner, and take the belt off? would I have to remove the crankshaft pulley? (I don't want to deal with that nut even thought the timing belt job was done recently).

The crank pulley needs to come off to get the lower cover off

That bolt isn't that bad. Don't be scared of it. But be sure its scared of you.

In your original post you said you had 200K miles on your car. Your going to have to replace the timing belt at 210K if you follow Acuras" MNT schedule anyway. I know it is more cost but then you should good to over 300K.

already had it replaced few miles ago, thinking the tensioner was causing the ticking noise 😞

Air Grinding, applying Silicone RTV and seal installation.

So, like i said earlier, i has the timing belt changed by a local guy a month ago. So now, when i opened the covers and aligned the crannk pully to the arrow, i don't see the camshaft pulleys aligned to 1 and and the line at the back... is this normal?

Turn the crank 360 degrees clockwise until the mark lines up again

Then check the cam timing to see if it lines up.

It's always the last few things🤬🤬

Just for context this happened while tightening slowly, with very little resistance

So it was not completely touched and rested against something, but it doesn’t matter, put a new one.

The guidance in the service manual I have (from Honda Motor Co.) states the following for removal and installation of the rocker arm assembly:

1) Loosen the locknut and back out as far as possible all the valve clearance adjustment screws for all valves.
2) In a specific order, loosen the rocker arm bolts 2 turns apiece.. Repeat this in the same order until all the tension is off the rocker arm assembly bolts

For installation, with the valve adjustment screws still backed out as far as they will go, tighten the rocker arm bolts two turns apiece in a specific order and repeat until they are snug. then torque them in the same specific order.
Then adjust all valves to spec.
Did you follow this procedure?

I didn't loosen the screws as far as possible, will do that this time (actually this may be the reason due to the new rocker arm I put in), but yea, I did go two turns at a time. Thanks!

The mistake was right infront of my eyes, those rockers needed to be pushed up manually after reasting it on the cylinder head. Otherwise they are facing down, such a dumb mistake. Ah well
