Gas - MPG

Whats up guys & gals?

Ever since I bought my TL, the mpg I have been averaging are pretty low - 10 to 12 MPG. This is ridiculous and I don't think the stop and go traffic in the city has anything to do with it. Could it be the fuel that I am using? Been using BP Amoco. I filled the tank on Saturday morning, drove about 175 miles before refilling yesterday. This time I filled the tank with Sunoco 93 oct - noticed a slight improvement on the drive home but wouldnt be sure until I drive more this weekend. Just curious to know what others are using and averaging with their TL's.

Peace out

It has everything to do with city driving. Here i philly if i strickly drive in the city, i get 12-13. When i have mixed driving i'm around 15-16. It is what it is bro. MPG on the window stickers is based on EPA estimates in perfect conditions most times while driving under the speed limit which overstates the real world mileage.

I do almost 90% city driving with short trips and I usually see anywhere between 14 - 15.5 mpg ( I reset the A counters with every refuel). A bit lower than what I was hoping for, but seems there are worse out there. City driving is the culprit of course, but 10-12 still seems a bit low. I am sure NYC traffic has a lot to contribute as well.

when your in city, your consistently stopping and going.

which causes your rpms to rev up and down from 1 to lets say 4000

which requires your car to dump more gas into your motor.

with highway miles, your car is consistanly staying at 2000 to 2500 rpm and given the factor that you are rolling as well.

keep in mind the tl is 4000+ lbs.

Seems low, I also drive in NYC a lot and usually like I stole my car and average 18-25mpg city/hwy. But I hardly ever brake and usually let my car crawl to a stop.

Being winter, the amount of time you let the car sit idling at warm up and what have you, can really kill your gas mileage. It's the same concept as stop and go traffic. Check your air pressure and oil level too, it makes a difference.

I generally use Mobile or Shell and am very happy with the results but I also drive long stretches of rural roads which is almost highway-like but my TL is also the 6MT so it might not be the same exact references but I can get 18 without trying and have done as high as 25 on the same roads and commute but I feel the stick really help maximize the efficiency with nuetral rolls and more ideal gear placements. Perhaps one could try something to that effect in an AT by manually (manumatically) shifting and see if it helps.

What's strange is that most of the driving I did over the weekend was pretty much on the expressway - FDR, Westside hwy, BQE, etc. after filling my tank with the Sunoco gas, I took the car out of the garage tonight and took her out for a spin to get some wine. When I left the garage I was at 15.1 mpg. When I got back home I was at 14.

Don't forget about the wintertime fuel blends - you'll get 2-3 mpg worse during the winter.

The fuel mileage will get even worse in the hot summer days, with the A/C compressor working hard all day long.

OP, that's really terrible mileage. I have consistently bettered the EPA #s in my 2010 MT. It's now sitting at 25.3 over about 15K miles. I do about 50% highway and 50% city/suburban driving. Cold weather and city driving do knock it down some.

Are you using the computer or figuring the mileage by hand against the gas pump & odometer? I always found a difference between the two methods in my TL.

I fill up with Chevron and when I was doing nothing but city driving for about 5 months I avg 14-15 mpg. Now that I do about 85-15 hwy/city I avg 22.5 according to the MID.

Are you changing to a different weight oil or staying with the same weight oil ?

I'm averaging about 21.5, half freeway, half city driving. But keep in
mind I definitely like to push my TL to the limit when I'm behind the wheel.

impressive result. I'm going to skip my next free oil change for synthetic. I have 21-22mpg for 50/50.

So I was driving around yesterday and the MPG went from 14 (per my previous post) to 12.5. This is insane and i'm not even driving like a maniac.

I have had my 2012 AWD car since late December. My driving is technically city, but I would say it is 40 highway/60 city. My average (calculated) is 21.9 with a high of 23.1 and low of 20.4. Looking forward to a total highway drive to see how good the mileage can be.

Forget the onboard calculations of your mpg... I don't go by those. Check again when you fill up how many miles you've got to a gallon... It also may help to check the instant mpg feature to see how you can alter your driving habits to better your mpg. I've found that the TL's accelerator pedal is very sensitive. They really should have an "ECON" mode for this car. I can't complain though. I do 60/40 highway/city and consistently get around 24mpg.
