Factory Remote Start
Factory Remote Start
Im getting a 2012 TL and saw the remote start in the accessories.
does anybody have it and is it better or equal to aftermarket remote starters...
I don't want to have to carry two fobs.

It still blows my mind that with the 4G TL you need to have 2 fobs. What a joke. I have two other vehicles that have had remote starts since day one. My 97 4Runner and our 03 Maxima. But I can't get one for my 2010 TL. What is up with that?????
There are two aftermarket solutions.
You can get one from Directed (they have multiple brands under the parent company, like Clifford and Viper), that gives you remote start using the factory key. Just press lock three times or something and the car starts. This would be similar to what I've seen on Chrysler vehicles. Only problem with this is that the range will be limited to the range of the factory remote, which isn't much.
The second one is what I have on my TL, its the smart start by directed. Use your phone to start the car. Not as convenient as the previous option, but offers better range. The smart start requires a subscription ($50 a year) since it connects to a cellular network, so you and the car need to be in range of a cell tower for it to work.
To me, these represent the best options for the TL. Keep in mind that both of these solutions will shut the car down when the door is opened to your car, requiring you to restart the car after you get in.

To a warm place.
The main purpose of a remote starter is to warm up your car on a cold day before you get there. But most remote starter has a range of 15' or so. So by the time I get out of my office and walk to the parking lot in order to start my car, I rather just go sit in there and drive off.

The one that uses your stock key fob i bet has a really short range. I have to be 4-5 car lengths away to use it.
