Exhaust Help! Botched Dealer Repair

Quick back story, last year at the time of my inspection the local Acura dealer said my flex pipe (I assumed within my J-Pipe) was leaking. To pass the inspection they said it needed to be welded or replace the parts but the parts weren't available (I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada) so because the dealership doesn't weld up exhaust components it should go to a third-party shop. Long story short, I picked up the car at the third-party shop and was told you're good to go.

Fast forward to last month and my exhaust was VERY loud. Looked under the car on cold starts and could see exhaust around the J-Pipe area. Waited for the dealer to order the part... three weeks later, still on back order so I shipped an Endless RPM J-Pipe from the US at a cost of nearly $800 bucks after shipping, exchange, duty, etc.

So, part arrives, I jack my car up and find this.........

J-Pipe Cut/New Flex Pipe clamped on.

Aftermarket Cat, I'm assuming welded in at the same time with a flex pipe.

Now I'm here with a new J-Pipe, and in the car a cut in half and clamped j-pipe welded to a catalytic converter that's welded to my exhaust pipe. The only solution I can think of is a new high-flow cat and a new exhaust system.

Two Questions
1. Any way to fix this?
2. If I'm screwed.... where in Canada can I get an aftermarket bolt in cat and cat-back exhaust for the 09 TL 3.7L SH-AWD?

To make things worse they probably sold OEM cat for at least $200 and replaced it with something cheap.

I'm sure it can be fixed though. Does that endless jpipe delete the cat? If not then you can buy a high flow cat from the same place as you got the jpipe probably. Take it somewhere else and they could fix it up with your new parts.

Unfortunatley, you're probably right about the cheap cat.

The J-Pipe I ordered didn't delete the cat, I'll likely buy a new cat-back exhaust and temporarily put in a test-pipe for now.

I would order again from Endless RPM, the only downside is being in Canada aftermarket parts from the US are painfully expensive. Hoping to find a Canadian manufacturer but if not.... I'll just order it all out of the US. From now on I"ll do all the installs, in the past I had the dealer do it since I bought the car from Acura because I thought I was keeping the car A-1 shape.... damn was I wrong.

Looking at the picture, which side did the shop fix? J-Pipe side (2 cats but after market has 1 cat) or the Exhaust side?

https://acurazine.com/forums/4g-tl-p...-today-923412/

I have been thinking of a J-Pipe for years....

My apologies but I see the problem now. I had to go under my car for a rattle from a rusted out CAT Shield. I temporarily fixed it with a metal clamp. Let us know what you did as well. I am based in T.O and I might be doing the same thing at some point. i.e. Replace CAT and/or get J-pipe and Exhaust.

I had the same issue with the heat shield a few years ago and the dealership (Atlantic Acura) used a clamp to secure the heat shield as well. That's been holding ever since.

The shop cut off the flex pipe on the precat side and cut off on the exhaust side of the 3rd cat. Then created a Frankenstein flex-pipe/Cat and clamped and welded it in. Don't know why they would go through the hassle to weld both sides of the cat and just clamp the front of the flexpipe.

To fix it I took the new J-Pipe to Focused Motorsports (Focused Motorsports) and they're unbolting the remaining J-Pipe, cutting off just in front of the Cat and welding on a flange. This way they can bolt in the purchased J-Pipe. While the care is there they're going to price up a custom stainless exhaust from the J-Pipe back for a later date to install.

I'll post some pictures when I have the car back.

@Unknownerror0010011 Thanks for the TIP re: RV6 dealer in T.O. For the RV6 Long Pipe, will it trigger a CEL light? I would doing a bit a googling and I noticed that there are O2 sensors before and after the CAT. Will it pass emissions testing?

I have the rv6 jpipe and high flow pre cats. No lights get triggered. Never had an issue related to it. I also passed emissions with it in Ontario.

RV6 PCD's and HFPC's have defoulers to prevent a CEL ive had mine on for a little over a year i think and never had the light pop up, the J-pipe cat is unmonitored. I used to be an etest technician, in Ontario thier is no longer and emissions test for passenger vehicles. And the only time i would check for cats is when i could smell fumes with HFPC's you can barely notice the fumes.

RV6 J Pipe will not trigger a CEL, neither will the HFPC. I have both of these from way back and have had no issues.

PCD's are hit or miss, some have CEL and some don't , positioning / spacing of the defoulers seems to be the key.

Thanks to all who replied!!! To confirm, a RV6 J-Pipe long tube will replace the rattle-ly CAT's heat shield at the same time. If true, the RV6 J-Pipe has a 'long tube' option is really cool!

I solved my third cat heat shield problem by ripping it off, drove on it like that for around 2 years with no issues.
