the TL has 3 cats.
2 primary cats and a third cat underneath the car.

if you are talking about removing the third cat and straight piping it...it will only yield 2-3hp.
the better move would be to replace the Jpipe and third cat with an aftermarket Jpipe that has better bends which helps exhaust gas evacuate faster.
an aftermarket jpipe that removes the third cat cost about $350-500 and will yield 15hp.

Deleting cats will have an effect on your exhaust system in a couple ways...

There is always emission testing to consider. If you live in an area that is strict about their testing then it is very possible you'll run into issues, and will need to revert back to your stock parts every couple of years. This is something that doesn't concern some people, but others like to avoid the potential for extra hassle.

Deleting the pre-cats with a system that is pretty close to a straight pipe will cause some rasp as well, so sound is going to be another thing to consider. From my experiences guys with a setup similar to yours usually end up looking for a way to quiet it back down a bit. Adding a resonator or switching to HFPCs are usually the best ways to fix this (if you find yourself getting to that point).

The last downfall of the PCDs is the exhaust smell they tend to make in the cabin when you're stopped. When there is air moving this shouldn't be noticeable, but some find it overwhelming sitting at a light or something like that.

If you haven't done the Jpipe already I would recommend starting there! It will allow you to pickup a couple extra HP by deleting the cat and merging the pipes together with a smoother bend. Plus emissions testing shouldn't be as big of a concern since that deletes an unmonitored cat, won't cause a CEL, and doesn't require a tune to run! The Jpipe will change the exhaust note as well, so you can get a little bit of everything like this!

If you already have the Jpipe then HFPC/PCDs are a great way to continue to pick up power! Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like help getting setup. I'll link you to our site below so you can see the pieces I mentioned:

RV6 PCD: RV6-PCD-TL-3G - RV6 Pre Cat Delete - Excelerate's Honda & Acura Store - Japanese Performance Specialist
RV6 HFPC: RV6-HFPC-TL-3G - RV6 High Flow Pre Cat - Excelerate's Honda & Acura Store - Japanese Performance Specialist
XLR8 Jpipe: JPIPE-V2-UA67 - XLR8 J-Pipe - Excelerate Performance - European, Exotic and Japanese Performance Specialists!!

Good luck and happy modding!

Like XLR8 said, J-pipe is the best way to start. The 3G has a pretty restrictive J-pipe/downpipe. I used the RV6 for my 3G and the XLR8 for my 4G. Very happy with both in terms of quality, sound and performance.

PRE-CAT DELETES + V3 JPIPE + RESONATOR - MID MUFFLER = horseshit rice cooker
Keep the mid-muffler, or get high flow cats, or invest in a high quality cat back exhaust. But running no cats with a j-pipe sounds like an EP3 with an eBay exhaust.

ATLP exhausts have a heavenly note without all the rasp and drone.

I agree, the ATLP sounds absolutely orgasmic.
If I wanted to build my own custom ATLP (purely for the sound, not for the performance) would it essentially be;
Keep the stock PreCat's and J-pipe, then straight pipe (delete 3rd cat, resonator, and mid-muffler) back, and keeping the rear mufflers?

My 3rd cat is an ATLP high flow, and I have the resonator on aswell. Stock HFPC.

I'll make a video of the ATLP J-pipe, ATLP high flow 3rd cat and ATLP cat back w/ resonator so you can see what it sounds like.

Going to install RV6 high flow precats this weekend!

i currently have all stock exhaust except the rear muffler delete and it sounds amazing. With no rasp. But now my question is will installing high flow primary cats cause a check engine light.?

Hey guys so I bought an 05 tl a couple months ago. I haven’t had the time to look at it completely yet but from what the previous owner said I’m pretty sure it’s completely straight piped. No cats, aftermarket j-pipe and all mufflers deleted. Not sure about resonator. It does cause a CEL every once in awhile but goes away in a day or so and will stay off for weeks. But it is WAY TOO LOUD!! Super raspy, gets louder and shitter when you let off the throttle and after 3000rpm sounds like a weed whacker. Can’t stand it anymore. Any suggestions on what to do? I’m considering buying a stock exhaust and starting over. Also worried about passing inspection with the cat deletes.

RV6 manufactures them:

https://www.rv6-p.com/v3pcd-223.html

They come highly recommended around here. I've purchased jpipes and their high-flow cats for both my 3G and 4G TL and have been very happy with their products.

Edit: it looks like they're on backorder however. States a lead time of 4-6 weeks. Their products are often in high demand so they're occasionally on backorder. They do most of their fabrication in house. My HFPC's were on backorder when I purchased them for my 4G. It took about 3 weeks before I got them.
