Thoughts on Cat delete??
the TL has 3 cats.
2 primary cats and a third cat underneath the car.
if you are talking about removing the third cat and straight piping it...it will only yield 2-3hp.
the better move would be to replace the Jpipe and third cat with an aftermarket Jpipe that has better bends which helps exhaust gas evacuate faster.
an aftermarket jpipe that removes the third cat cost about $350-500 and will yield 15hp.

Like XLR8 said, J-pipe is the best way to start. The 3G has a pretty restrictive J-pipe/downpipe. I used the RV6 for my 3G and the XLR8 for my 4G. Very happy with both in terms of quality, sound and performance.
Jpipe are useless, please advice this kid the right way!

Keep the mid-muffler, or get high flow cats, or invest in a high quality cat back exhaust. But running no cats with a j-pipe sounds like an EP3 with an eBay exhaust.

If I wanted to build my own custom ATLP (purely for the sound, not for the performance) would it essentially be;
Keep the stock PreCat's and J-pipe, then straight pipe (delete 3rd cat, resonator, and mid-muffler) back, and keeping the rear mufflers?

Hey guys so I bought an 05 tl a couple months ago. I haven’t had the time to look at it completely yet but from what the previous owner said I’m pretty sure it’s completely straight piped. No cats, aftermarket j-pipe and all mufflers deleted. Not sure about resonator. It does cause a CEL every once in awhile but goes away in a day or so and will stay off for weeks. But it is WAY TOO LOUD!! Super raspy, gets louder and shitter when you let off the throttle and after 3000rpm sounds like a weed whacker. Can’t stand it anymore. Any suggestions on what to do? I’m considering buying a stock exhaust and starting over. Also worried about passing inspection with the cat deletes.

They come highly recommended around here. I've purchased jpipes and their high-flow cats for both my 3G and 4G TL and have been very happy with their products.
Edit: it looks like they're on backorder however. States a lead time of 4-6 weeks. Their products are often in high demand so they're occasionally on backorder. They do most of their fabrication in house. My HFPC's were on backorder when I purchased them for my 4G. It took about 3 weeks before I got them.
