auto locking when you walk away

is this possible? it appears that it will unlock as you get close, and put hand on door handle, but will it automatically lock when you walk away out of range???
I just got mine yesterday, still learning the car.

so is that a "I dont know" or is that a "I know but I'm gonna be an a$$ and just not say because its easier to type what I did than type a 'yes' or 'no'..."

either way, its all good. I'll check the manual

Seriously, the first thing you should always do when you buy a new car is to sit down and read the manual. There is probably a lot of it you can skim or skip over, but there is a lot of useful information in there.

And for the record, the system does not auto-lock nor unlock. The car is designed to read the signal from the key when you approach the vehicle. The trigger to unlock the car is when you place your hand on the door handle. To lock it, just step out of the vehicle, make sure all the doors are closed, and touch the door handle to lock.

All of this should be covered in the owners manual.

yes thank u. just got the car last night, and plan on reading this weekend. I'm sure there is a lot to learn given how big the book is.

This is a good question, because I wondered the same thing. I was at an Acura dealership back in 2007, and the manager demonstrated this feature on the RL. I thought it was cool as hell at the time, and was hoping it would be on the TL at some point.

And before someone tells me to read the manual, I don't have a 4th gen TL yet, still got my '05.

This is actually something new to me too. I am in the early stages of researching the TL. I'm planning on getting on this month if all goes well in selling my current car. I guess I will learn a lot more about the different features when I go for a test drive next week.

there is not an option to auto lock the car when you walk away or auto unlock when you walk up. You have to put your hand through the handle. The options you have are whether it unlocks all the doors or just the one you put your hand in.

The manual is very very long.....so to all those people who say "read the manual" without answering the question are wasting everyone's time.

Don't worry about the smart ass remarks Brian, you'll find a lot of people like that on Forums, there just being whimsical. I don't know why it's so hard for some to be helpful, but they're right, reading the manual is "key", because some of the advice above is incorrect. I've read the manual twice, but over 640 pages is just too much too remember, and the new TL has a lot of features, especially if your coming from a previous car with a different manufacturer.

For those who don't have a manual: The range to open the doors via FOB key is 32". If the key is in your pocket, when you place your hand on the handle, by default the driver door will unlock. This can be reconfigured for all doors to open in the MID section under DOOR LOCK MODE on page 111.

Here's the fun part, if you do not open any of the doors within 30 seconds once it's disarmed, they will automatically re-lock. You can also change this in the "SECURITY RELOCK TIMER" section in the MID. There is also a button on the driver door handle that will lock all doors and the trunk if you press it, but the FOB key must be with the allocate range. And make sure the key is not in the car. LOL. Keep reading, there's more.

Had my TL nearly a week, and I'm very disappointed in the incomplete implementation of the proximity unlocking. I regularly put things in the back seat, be it groceries, backpack, etc. However, even with the MID set to unlock all doors, you CAN'T simply walk up and touch the rear doors and have them unlock. You first must touch the driver door handle, THEN open the rear doors. Makes no sense to me!

It's almost easier to revert to pushing the unlock button on the remote than first touching the driver door, then stepping backward to open a back door.

At least the trunk will unlock by proximity! Why can't the rear doors? At least add it as an option in the MID. Seems like a big oversight to me.

After the door(s) are closed (with the fob in your pocket) press the rubber button on the handle as you walk away from the car. On return touch the inside of the handle and the door will unlock. (now I want the same for my house)

probably because those 'touch' handles cost $. you can also touch the front passenger's door handle.

Wait how do you set the MID to unlock all doors since we're on the subject?

On a $42K car Acura could certainly spend the extra $50 to 'touch enable' the rear doors. 75% of the time I need to put something in the back seat and this design is really mind boggling. Acura really dropped the ball.

But surely you were able to get your rear doors open in the olden days when you all you had was a key fob, your wits and stunning good looks.

I'm am SURE you can adapt and overcome the lack of "touch to open" rear doors.

I think it would be a really good idea if they had the rear doors touch enabled. It would be very handy for people with young children/infants like me.

Set it to open all doors. Touch one of the front door handles. Then all - even the rear doors will be unlocked there's what 2 feet between t 2 handles? Still beats having to use a traditional key fob

Ultra-Modern Styling
Power sliding doors (EX, EX-L, Touring) can be easily operated with the remote entry system from up to 50 feet away.

I doubt anyone knows that it costs them only $50. Also if they started losing sales because of it, they might one day do it. BUT, my guess is that it costs more than $50, and since people like yourself still bought the product, it was an unnecessary expense.
