Acuras are slow
Not to bash the TL directly but the competition with the same Hp and Torque seem quicker on paper. Could it be that Acura cannot develop a proper 6. 7 or 8 speed tranny like Lexus and Infiniti. The GS 350 8 speed and 6 speed AWD) is quicker than my RL SH-AWD and the G35x (6 speed) and G37X (7 speed) embarrass the new TL SH-AWD. I think the Acura TL is a great car but it did not leap frog over the competition in performance.

As soon as I saw the title of the thread, I knew it couldn't be any good. This person is a tool, and not the sharpest tool in the shed to post this type of comment in here.
"...seem quicker on paper?" Are you kiddin' me? I test drove three cars before buying my second TL, Audi A4, Lexus IS, and Infinity G37, so I know first hand and would not rely on reports on paper. So what if one car is faster than another, the important thing is that this TL works best for me and my money, nothing more! Oh, the other factor is no one is driving a 09' TL in my area, which makes it even more special! I love the looks and comments.

If you're buying a 4 door luxury car for straight line speed then you were obviously deprived from real sports cars as a child. In all my years of driving, i have yet to come across an angry old lady in her GS350 willing to race.

Ahh a subject near to everyone's heart. My point is every manufacturer Japanese, Domestic, and German uses a tranny of 6 or 7 speeds in there best vehicles to get better performance and mileage. The only real exception is the AMG engines that produce 500+ torque. Acura lags behind. The TL is a great new RL, same size, weight, and much improved fit and finish. An overall wonderful car, but there is always room for improvement.

Seriously, Acuras are more than competitive with their European and Japanese competitors. They are neither the fastest nor are they the slowest.

OP - I'm not going to flame you, there is enough of that here already serious tho - what did you expect? IMO my TL is a lot faster than some other cars I have owned. If you were looking for speed you should have bought a lambo...then let me drive it! hehe

Indeed, if you can exceed the performance envelope with these cars on public streets, I suggest that you are breaking some law, somewhere.

so many with so little manhood that they can't stand a little constructive criticism. How many would regret not waiting if Acura pops a 6 speed auto for 2010 with sub 6 0-60. Or would most complain that Acura ripped them off by not coming out with the better tranny at the onset. Again, I think the TL is a great all around car in the Sh-AWD version, I just think it is about time Acura improves the sport family sedan tranny.

A 97mph trap in the 1/4 is not slow by any means. But the competition is trapping 100mph. But performance isn't a major deal breaker. My 04 TL does just fine for what I want it to do. Acceleration on freeway on ramps, passing power on back roads. I'm not going out looking for V6 Camrys and IS350s to race.

And really, what owner could complain that they were 'ripped off' because it only has 5 speeds? It's not as if Acura slipped this fact past everyone....you knew right?

it's because Honda likes doing things on their own, and not rely on outsiders to design their gearboxes (like jatco, aisin, zf, getrag, etc). Of course some cars companies own those companies.

HA, bunch of CRY BABIES . Can't take his criticism and just want to call him troll? Even if he is, he is damn RIGHT
The point being, the 4th generation TL sucks against TODAY competition in performance and exterior point of view while delivering NOTHING BUT INTERIOR QUALITY as expected. Period. My 3rd gen. TL was fine then but ACURA LOST me a customer with the new generation. Both G37S and G37X wipe the floor with new TL again in performance and exterior, but....wait..........while the gas mileage is equivalent. Lexus GS350 does the same.
So the question comes, why Acura TL still SLOW and still employs OLD engine design vs competition and HEAVY vehicle with lack of performance?

I went back and read your ramblings. Here’s my take:
1 – You are directly bashing the TL.
2 – Maybe the competition is faster on paper. I drive on asphalt.
3 – I think Acura established themselves pretty well against the much more powerful Audis and Porsches (2 of the most successful names in endurance racing) in ALMS. Infiniti could barely compete against Buick in Indycars and bolted. Toyota bolted when Honda began to dominate. Racing is a fair analogy because technology trickles to the streets. Almost everything from seatbelts to paddleshifters were born on the track.
4 – If all I was concerned about was straight line acceleration I would have gotten the Caddy CTSV.
5 – You don’t get it why Honda/Acura buyers love their cars. “Technological Simplicity”
Sorry everyone, I should have combined my responses.

The TL is as fast as roughly as fast as CTS and A4 3.2, two of the main competitors. The TL is lighter than the CTS (which is over 4000lb). The TL comes with AWD, which adds weight. The TL is a bigger car than most of its competitors making it heavier. I'd actually imagine with that extra AWD system and size, the TL would be A LOT heavier than now (over 4000lb), but it's not. The J series is an old design, but the J37 still produces BMEP of 11.9 bar, far higher than 11.34 bar of the G37. For comparison the AMG 6.3L engine makes 10.5 bar.
Hopefully I answered all, if not most of your questions.
