Acura newbie requesting help

Hi all,

I live in California Bay Area and am really excited to buy my first car (total car newbie here). I've decided to buy new - a 2013 Acura TL + Tech Package. I have so many questions and hopefully you experienced folk can give a newbie some advice

I've contacted several dealerships online in my area and pretty much all of them have told me an OTD price of $39,000. Is this pretty much the best I can get at the moment? I'm okay with the price, but if I know this can be lowered, I definitely would like to know.

Ever since I've decided on the TL (a week ago) I started reading up news about Acura releases. I know that they are releasing the 2014 TLX which is suppose to replace the current TL. Am I buying the TL at a wrong time? Do you guys think I should skip the 2013 TL and buy the 2014 TLX? Please help, I feel a bit lost..

Ok, I think I will wait for a TLX release date as well. I'm just really excited to have my own car, and am kind of rushing things. Is $39K OTD a good price?

This is an average OTD price for TL tech for people who does research, not just buy what I want ;-)

I wish I was be able to pay $39K for my own first car! Wait for 2014 TLX as mentioned above for sure...

Welcome to AZ though

I don't think there is enough solid information out there regarding the TLX to make any decisions at this point. Is it worth it to wait and see and then decide? I think that depends on your situation.

Is the 2013 an SHAWD Tech? If so, then I think $39k OTD is a good price. If is a FWD Tech model, I would like to think you can do much better. But the pricing does depend on the area and I am not from California so my opinion will probably weigh less than those of others from the area.

Welcome to AZ and congrats on your TL choice whenever it happens. I would check some of the automotive sights like truecar or edmunds to get pricing of TL's overall and in your area. I also think you can do better than 39k otd on a 13/tech. And they will be cheaper yet if you can wait for the TLX intro!

OP: check out True Market Value on Edmunds....

Word I'm getting from the sales manager at my Acura dealer is that the TLX will be a 2015 model available in Spring 2014.

I paid only slightly less for my 2013 SH-AWD Tech. From what I can gather, that's a decent price. As for waiting, it depends on you're situation. If you need a vehicle (lease is up, current one is old/maintenance issues) I would not wait what will be a year at the minimum (maybe more) to find out what the TLX may hold. I also don't know that I would buy the first MY of the 5G. Just my opinion.

Yeah I don't think I'd ever buy the first year of a new model either, you never know what kind of issues the car will have until after it's in circulation for a while. Year 2 & 3 of a new production are always the best IMO.

The 2013 TL is at the end of the cycle and it's proven that it's a very solid reliable car. The downfall is you end up with something that might look a little dated (and have less cutting edge tech) than the 2015 TLX but to be honest I still loved the look of my 05 TSX when I traded it in and that was after the new model had been out for 4 years.

Thank you all for the replies, I knew it was a good idea to post here first.

I checked up on Edmunds and TrueCar for sales of Acura TL in my area (CA is pretty expensive..) and the results are pretty close to what the dealerships are offering me. The only issue left is that if the TLX is going to be a 2015 model and debuting in 2014, I'm not sure if I can wait that long. It also makes sense to not buy the first year of a new model, so thanks for pointing that out.

It's going to be a test to see how long I can resist pulling the trigger on this.

Truecar shows that the prices you are being quoted are pretty accurate. One thing I know is that Acura on Stevens Creek throws in 5 B1 services (do a search on the forum to get what that includes). Others will match that if you have written proof. I know because I got Acura of Pleasanton to match them.

Both True Car and Edmunds rely heavily on average selling prices. You should be able to beat those with a little skilled negotiating.

Wreak i disagree w u on avoiding buying new model for fear of "issues". For instnce my 11 mdx bak up cam is pretty much useless compared to the 07mdx i had. So ur not nec getting all the bugs out of system by waiting....Imo. Still dumbfounded on how they screwed that one up....

What I did was used the Internet Sales department by requesting a quote from every dealer's website in my area. They know that you are price shopping and will typically come out with a pretty good price. Be sure to let them know exactly what you are looking for (package, interior, exterior). I was not able to get the price lower than what they initially offered me though (2013 SHAWD Advance $41,795 which was $4500 of MSRP). I purchased in Fort Worth and none of my local dealers had the car I wanted in stock so I had to wait about three weeks for the car. I would assume a FWD model would have much more negotiation room since every dealer will likely have what you are looking for on the lot. I am certain there are other AZ'ers that bought at a lower price then me and many that paid more. The Internet sales department has worked for me with several of my past auto purchases though.

Good luck!

FYI I got my 2012 FWD w Tech for $38K out the door in July 2012 from San Diego. Don't forget that the OP lives in CA/San Francisco so he's going to pay nearly 9% in sales tax. I'm assuming his $39K OTD price is already inclusive of the TTL and destination fee. The agreed upon price without TTL for me was $34.5k which was $6k under the $40.5K sticker. So you're in the right ballpark. You could probably shave another $500-$1k if you haggle hard. Do what I did. Get quotes from every dealer within 100 miles of you. For me that was nearly 20 dealerships in SoCal. Two were significantly lower than everyone else and that's what I used to get the price I wanted from a third dealership (the two lowest didn't have BRPII color in stock so I went to one that did and had them price match).

Alright, I think I made my decision - going to go this weekend to a few dealerships and see if I can get anything below $39K OTD. If I can't, I'm still happy - I really like the TL.

Thanks everyone again.

It sounds like you have done good research and decided you want a 13'.

Hope your TL shopping goes well, and you can find the best deal.
