Road Trip
Road Trip
We picked up our 2022 Platinum Elite (Canadian Advance model) in early November and didn’t have much chance to drive it other than a couple trips within our city. We’ve now just completed an over 2200 mile road trip from Saskatchewan, Canada to Houston, Texas. This vehicle has been an absolute delight to drive on the trip. The MDX was fully loaded with luggage, two adults, our golden retriever, and a Thule roof top box. There seems to be a bit more space for packing stuff especially with the larger under floor compartment in the rear. (Or maybe I finally convinced my wife to pack less? No.)
We averaged just under 25 mp Imperial gallon or 21 mp US gallon. This is a bit better than we used to get with our 2010 MDX on the same trip. I calculate all my MPG using the RoadTrip HD app so it’s more accurate than the trip computer in the MDX. The cruising highway speeds varied between 65 to 80 mph.
We both found the seats on the new MDX to be much more comfortable compared to the 2010. I wish it had the massage feature that will be in the S version but I will survive. I know there are lots of complaints on the forums about the tires on the new MDX but we really didn’t notice anything out of the normal road noise and we travelled over many different road surfaces. Maybe my hearing isn’t as good at 66 as some of the other owners? Just kidding.
I really didn’t have much time to play with the touchpad before the trip but found it very easy to adapt to. The Acura navigation system did a good job and quickly recalculated our routes when we would take a “detour” from it’s original route.
I still haven’t tried the Apple Car play so I cannot report on that.
My only mishap was a rock chip in the very top corner of the windshield on the drivers side. It’s outside the field of view so I think I can wait until retuning back to Canada to have it replaced. I think on the previous 10 trips down here with the other MDX we went through about 3 windshields as well. Maybe future vehicles could switch to “Gorilla glass” although I’ve read they are still cost prohibitive at this point.
For anyone out there purchasing a new vehicle, see if the Tuxmats are available for your model. They are excellent at keeping the dirt, slush and sand off the carpets and even cover the carpet area along the side of the seats. I’ve had the OEM all weather mats and WeatherTech in the past but I must say these are far superior to them.
There is one less pigeon on the earth as a flock took off from the side of the road and one of them lost his battle with the front corner of the Thule box. No damage on our part though.
All in all we are extremely pleased with our 2022 MDX to this point. There were no complaints from my wife/navigator or the backseat driver dog!

Great post and share of the road trip. Sorry to hear about the small misfortunes suffered.
My 2022 A-Spec is finally due to be delivered 11/27-12/1. I cannot wait to take delivery and look forward to a few coastal road trips later this year and into early next year.

Just looked through my pictures and unfortunately I don’t have any with the box on the top. I take it off in order to fit it in the garage so I will get a couple on the return trip. Sorry.
What color are you getting? We have the Phantom Violet Pearl. We would have loved the Performance Red Pearl however that is not available in Canada in the Platinum Elite / Advance model.
I hope you enjoy your new MDX and have many years of trouble free driving .
That’s great news. We had a long wait for ours as we put down a refundable deposit at the end of June and it didn’t arrive until around Halloween. Only 3 others arrived at the dealership in that time but all had been spoken for.

Last March we did three day 2300 miles trip from New Brunswick, Canada to Dallas in our '24 MDZ type S. We didn't check the gas mileage but it seemed about the same as the '21 RDX we had before. The butt massage seats are nice on long trips. Generally, I don't have a problem with the trac pad but on a road trip where you need to find locations on the fly it is a pain. I used WAZE for navigation, the notifications on WAZE saved me a few speeding tickets I'm sure. WAZE is the best in every way. I'm 71 and this is the best car I've ever owned.

We've done the same trip down to Texas every year since buying the MDX and it has been great. Wish I had the massaging seats though! We will be heading south again in a couple weeks.
