4th Gen 2022 MDX - Will They Give Us What We Want?
Hey all - The 2022 prototype SUV looks great in my opinion and the one-screen with decent tech is welcomed as every other manufacturer is "there" already. Acura owners have always compromised tech and navigation and the double screen for price and reliability.
2018 MDX Owner here with the advance package and bucket seats. We were excited to get this SUV because it had the following: a 3rd row for carpooling, and [actually] substantial trunk room with the third-row up as well as decent space in the third row for the passenger [best in its class that we could find]. It seemed to be the perfect car for someone consistently driving around with two kids, lugging the stuff and still fitting in a 2-car garage with a car next to it with ease. All to boot under $60K sticker.
Sure, you could go get a Tahoe or Yukon or QX80 or other SUVs in that larger size/class - but your sticker price would be rising considerably and it doesn't fit in the garage or parking space like an MDX does - it's real competition in the market was below -
Lexus RX350L and Toyota Highlander had bad trunk space with the third row up
Infiniti QX60 - no bucket seats for ease of use to third row
Volvo XC90 - now has buckets and true pass-through but with the third row up there is no trunk room - MDX is longer
The biggest, and only complaint we have is - you can't order this car without the console in between the buckets! Our console has been stepped on by kids climbing to the third row due to car seats in the buckets every day we've had this car. Maybe seems minor/petty, but there is a reason why they make SUVs with true pass-throughs in the second row.
I think the next-gen SUV would be perfect - provided they maintain the trunk room with the third row up, and give an option to delete the console in between the buckets if you order buckets instead of the bench. How hard could this be for the manufacturer?!?!
Again, as petty/minor as this may sound - I think we are out on the next-gen MDX unless they do this. Are we crazy and in our own little bubble or have others thought about this?
I have the issue of the car seats for the next three-plus years (and contrary to whatever they may tell you - that the bucket-slide with the car seats in-place just isn't workable we've found) - and this may be a deal-breaker.
Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts - -

Reason: Changed 2021 to 2022
All cars made are a comprimise. Some will like while others will hate whatever is put out there. I choose a Tech package because I needed a second row bench seat for our 120 pound Lab mix. There are features the advanced has that I wanted,,but again sacrifices.
We wanted the advanced package while shopping but needed a bench seat. Coming from a Nissan Rogue that has a 360 camera, we wanted it on the MDX, however, when we realized it comes with 6 seats instead of 7, we had to compromise, and got the tech package. Hopefully it won't be a PITA process to add the 360 camera system from a wrecked MDX Advanced. And since we are no longer having multiple kids in the vehicle for car pools, I am now considering swapping out the bench seat for the captain chairs.
I have a 19 MDX Adv and the captain chairs are really a downgrade compared to the bench seat. The captain chairs only advantage is they look more upscale. I've would have checked the option for a 2nd row bench if it was available for the hybrid Adv. Acura should have made a larger fold out center console for the Adv package with storage/USB plugs and you still have the option of placing a person/car seat in the position with the console up would be my suggestion (along with 2nd row ventilated seats).

Agreed. We have a 2019 MDX Sport Hybrid Tech which we love. We wanted the Advance SH and would have gladly paid for the extra features, but we bought the Tech solely because we didn't want the captain's chairs and needed the bench seat. With captains chairs, the vehicle becomes less practical than a sedan in certain situations.
I would love to see an option for ventilated 2nd row bench/captain chairs. My kids play soccer and that is a BIG plus after practices and games here in the South.
Genesis GV80 has that in the 3.5T AWD Prestige package. But that is a big jump of 6+K from the 3.5T AWD Advanced to Prestige. I don't need digital cluster and those other options in the Prestige package so it's a steep price to pay for ventilated seats.
I guess we are the outliers in the bench vs. buckets. We love the buckets in our MDX advance hybrid. But then the only time more than 4 seats are needed is with DD and SIL and two grandkids, whhich is just around town. The majority of time with others it's 4 adults and everyone loves the rear buckets for comfort, heated seats, etc. But yes the advance package should have an option of bench vs. buckets for those that want 3 person rear seating.
We like the captains chairs because we thought it would give us greater accessibility to the third row as opposed to the bench as our third row is almost permanently up. Served a great purpose less having to buy a Yukon or Tahoe. This thread has taught me a lot about who really buys the MDX with captains chairs / advance pack and apparently it’s not us 30-40 somethings who are lugging young kids around all day with car seats. We love the car, we just want an honest pass-thru. But if I’m the only one barking for it, I guess I’m in rare company and they shouldn’t make it. I didn’t think this was the case, given Volvo started offering a true passed through with bucket seats in the second row and so does the Highlander/RX350L. Not to mention many of our contemporaries drive the car; albeit with the bench.
What’s funny is... none of those cars just mentioned have real trunk room once the third row is up where is the MDX actually does and excels!
Make a true pass-thru, Acura - or at least have the ability to get rid of the console in the second row as an option!
You are not alone - we are the same way. FWIW - the SM of the local Dealership (both Acura & Honda) just moved his wife from an MDX to a pilot for the only reason being that she demanded pass thru captains chairs. The sales rep that I work with said they are hearing the new ones are modular where the middle 20% is removable, but he tempered that by saying we hear crazy stuff during this time on new models. I know he is cheering for it as he said that they have a lot of people come in that want buckets, but don't want the other features of the higher packages and don't like the console anyway.
BGR - This is great news! Not at all doubting this, but was curious where you found out about this? I scour the web daily trying to find out more on the upcoming 2022! Thanks

Someone that works at Acura. They received an email.
I already know the on sale date is early February but thought they wouldn't do the next announcement until after Christmas.
My dealer thinks sometime in mid to late February, but to be on the safe side he indicated early March is the realistic time frame. He told me to be ready to put a $500.00 deposit down the first week in January. He already has our build specs (Advance with SH-AWD, Ebony interior and exterior tbd). Will make exterior color decision after full reveal on December 8th.

Has he heard anything about price range in comparison to the current model's MSRP? The on-sale date is February 4th.
We haven’t discussed price yet, but I know they will be fair as I know the finance manager, the sales manager and our sales representative, we have done business there for years!

I just got this info this morning. It came from Acura..but, was marked Confidential...so just a few pieces of very basic info
on the MDX...showing the: Base, Tech Pkg, A-Spec Pkg, Advance Pkg. But, again, LOTS left out.
But here's the info under the Base MDX about the 2nd row. Quote: 2nd row removable center seat
So, there's some answer on this issue. It says nothing definitive about 2nd row Advance....I'm betting 2 Capt's seats.
I guess we'll see on Dec. 8th.
I'm still waiting for the spec on the MDX's Length. I know the wheelbase is 3" longer, BUT have not found any info on how much longer it is than 2020 MDX.
I only have so much extra length left in my garage. My '19 MDX Adv. fits, but, not a lot left in the front or rear. My connection at my dealer, where I've purchased
many Acura's said he thinks he saw it....???.....LOL....in a video....at 4" longer. I won't take that as gospel just yet.
IF it's 4" or under...I'm GOOD!! I will buy a new 2020. Love what I'm seeing. AND SOOOO GLAD THEY DID NOT PUT THE 2.0L Turbo 4 from the RDX in it!!
We were all worried they'd do that. Whew....! I've had many 3.5L V-6's from Honda Motor Corp, and have loved them all. It should be great mated to the new 10 speed.
I'm hearing the massage seats on the Advance and also the 25 speaker audio.
Yes, that's been out for awhile. It just wasn't shown on that release we both got today. Lots is missing off that.
I'm not sure IF 20" wheels will be the largest...OR will they go with the 21" on the Prototype. Prob. not is my best guess.
20's are just fine. Don't need the 21's.
The interior colors are the same as the last couple yrs. And most of the ext. colors. I can't wait to drive it and compare to my
'19 Adv. I think it rides really well. But, this new one just might be even better.
For the life of me, I can't understand why they don't allow customers to order whatever exterior and interior color combinations they want.
gone are the days when the available options on vehicles was as long as a well rope and you could pick and choose almost anything. Limit the options and it's easier keep stock that sells and not need to special order. Up through the 1980's I always ordered a car because what I wanted wasn't on the lot. By the mid 90's that changed and I've always been able to find exactly what I wanted on the lot. The only exception was our hybrid MDX advance, The first choice of exterior color was no where to be found in 5 states and to late to do a factory order.
My RDX lease is up in Sep 2021. I am hoping that the MDX S V6-Twin Turbo AWD is released and available by then as I need a bigger SUV and that's the one as the standard v6 is not it.

I'm thinking Monday we'll get the announcement for the full reveal for the 8th.
I hope they load up the Type S trim with advance options and not base the Type S on the ASPEC trim like the TLX. I can tell the MDX Type S has the 360 camera.
Sure, definitely. Probably a first for Acura, but currently available on production run, limited run and custom BMW Individual Manufaktur orders for the past couple of years.
BMW X7 xDrive40i/M50i Dark Shadow Edition in Individual Frozen Arctic Grey metallic matte finish
Well, overall I love what they've done to the MDX. LOTS of amazing changes for the good! Disappointed that the massage seats are
only on the upcoming Type S, as is the 25 speaker, 1,000 watt ELS 3D sound system. I thought they'd be avail. on the Advance. NOPE!
Waiting for the Build and Price on the Acura site. Hope it's up later today. With 1st arrivals due on Feb. 2nd, I would think we need the B&P
NOW! I'd also like to see so I can compare between the A-Spec and the Advance. What would I NOT GET on the A-Spec vs the Advance.
Love that A-Spec red interior! Wow..much more than what they do on the TLX version. Overall....I like what I see and I will buy...one of them!
