Cracked my wheel and scratched another... Interestingly enough, it didn't damage the tire.. at least I don't think it did. I'm still using it, going to replace it soon anyway considering the tread is already almost worn out (after only 14,000 mi?) Happened at night so I didn't see it coming up. Went back this morning to take pictures.

2 wheels damaged. Front right wheel was cracked. Rear right was scratched up. I replaced the front right since the air was leaking out from the crack and made the car undriveable. Going to call insurance tomorrow and see if the city will pay for the repair cost of the rear wheel as well. That pothole should've been fixed a long time ago, that thing is massive!


































BTW, not covered by warranty. Cost about $308 to replace the wheel. Hopefully I can get the city to pay for this.

Now that pothole is more like a sinkhole. Good luck with trying to get the city to pay for it...

Good job taking the pics. After seeing the size of the pothole, no doubt the city should pay. Sorry about your car and good luck getting it fixed.

Holy Shitsky!!! That thing is huge ... it would be hard to avoid even during the day.

Let us know how you make out with the City paying for the damage. I'd like to know how easy/difficult it is.

And yes, I thought only PA had monsters like that, no wonder it cracked your rim.

It's a long route to get the city to pay for stuff usually. I have done it, but mine was harder because they were paving the road so I had to find out who the contracted company was. After several months I had an $800 check in the mail for the exhaust that got ripped off of my WRX by a manhole cover.

Don't go here in canada quebec province, the road you show is quiet pretty good.

Here we are professionnal to avoid pot-holes. Sometimes there's so many that it's impossible to avoid.

I didn't think you could crack a mag so easily.

Damn, I only thought potholes were that size here in the Cleveland area . In the city of Cleveland itself, if the city knew about a pothole and you hit it, they say they'll pay. They've got pothole crews out on a regular basis, so they have to know at least about major thoroughfares. OTOH, I can only imagine how hard it is to get the city to admit to knowing about a pothole....

These pics really scares me... Tons of potholes in NYC like that, and I'm sure I hit a few of them in past months... I have to carefully check my car tomorrow...

I got tire and wheel insurance with my G where the acura dealer did not offer that. For 4 years if I loose a tire or wheel due to a road hazard they will replace it free. I figure it lookes like this person has 350 in tire damage and a rim .. that's about what 650 not including alignment?

I was going about 40-45 on that street. It was raining, and I drive rather conservatively while its raining. If it wasn't, I probably would've hit that pothole at 50-55.

It cost 310 for the new wheel. The tire didn't seem to suffer any damage.. I guess more proof that our tires are not wide enough to protect our wheels. I'm assuming it clipped just clipped the inside of the wheel, that's the only way I can explain how the tire wasn't destroyed.

BTW, anyone know the approximate tread life of the Bridgestone EL42 tires the stock 17" wheels come with? It seems like 14,000 miles is a very low number, but I think I need to get new tires soon.

You haven't been out to CA lately. I remember there was a study published recently that rated the condition CA roads (highway mostly) as the worst in the nation...booyah!

i freaking hate LA roads more than anything. potholes everywhere... so hard to see too. foglights help sometimes but :/

and the rain washes them out like no other... after the rain theres always a million potholes everywhere

The East Bay region in Northern California as well as San Francisco proper has a million potholes too... I hate driving in the city for that very reason. I know I've gone through a few of them myself, but now I've memorized where all of the potholes are in areas that I drive regularly.

In areas I don't drive regularly, if I see a big puddle I avoid it. Who knows what the puddle is hiding!

Did you have your tire properly inflated, by the way? I wonder if keeping the proper pressure in the tires might help prevent something like that.

Yeah, I changed my oil about 2 weeks ago and inflated the tires while I was at it.. I'm pretty sure it's pretty uncommon to crack a wheel like that, plus the pothole isn't really THAT deep, but I guess i just got "lucky" and hit it on the side of the wheel for it to crack

I guess East Coaster's should be happy - I just saw on the news (I think it was California) where a whole section of road just disappeared - for real - it was gone. Big enough to swallow the entire freakin car! Can you imagine - Insurance people are like - "Ok,sir, where is your TL parked right now so that we take a look at the damage"... Er, uh, it's at the bottom of the hole - I had to climb out to call you people. Could not get a signal on my cell down that deep..."

Good luck fixing yours. I am waiting my appointment to fix mine - not cracked like yours - but pretty pancaked. I have a queasy feeling in my stomach seeing the crack in the rim. That concerns me.

I had a lot of issues with the 50 series tires that were on my 01 CL S. I lost 3 tires in 25000 miles to side wall damage.

The tire place made the comment that 50 Series tires should not be driven in winter for potholes alone and to get a winter tire/rim package (60 Series). It was true the michelins that were on that car were well known for side wall issues. Yeah maybe he was trying to sell me more, but I know the guy pretty well and he runs a tire business and sees a lot of these issues.

Now the newer TLs have 45s on the car, probably because like on my older Cl, it improved the handling considerably. Even if the tire has reinforced side walls, you do not have much of a cushion for the rim. I would expect that this is going to happen more often when you drive lower profile tires.

Hey Shinj1EVA,

I bent a rim on my old Accord a few years back due to a pothole. I took pictures of the hole (as you did) and filed a report woth CALTRANS. It takes some work and a bit of time, but they did reimburse me for the full amount I spent for a new rim and tire. The rim and tire were aftermarket (18" Giovanna Corsica w/a Toyo tire); reimbursed me around ~ $400-$450 (if I remember correctly).

Bottom line, they should reimburse you...

Thanks for the heads up RawDogg. I'll try to contact them later today. I don't know if they'll reimburse me for the cost to repair the chipped rim though, probably just the one that cracked. Then again, doesn't hurt to try.

Just replaced mine at 20,000 cause tread was shot AND just hit a pothole/crater in princeton, NJ. They have the worse roads around in the area and it's a rich township!.

When I went to mechanic to have new tires mounted, balanced - he discovered that two of my rims were bent. One that had hit the pothole.

I'm going to complain to township and hopefully I can get $$.

That is what you people are referring to when you talk about potholes?!?!?! Are you kidding? If there was one like that here, forget getting the rim paid for, the city would probably be sued. And I complain about 8-10" diameter X less than 2" deep potholes...

Make sure your oil filter is ok up front on that right side ...

i hit a pothole and cracked the filter as the damper fork came up and hit the filter -- lost 3 quarts of oil over 4 months .. nearly killed my engine.

I love the question of how many miles will the EL42's be good for, kinda reminds me of the old old Tootsie-Pop commercials.. the world will never know, who actually has them that hasn't had a free set put on by the dealership in trying to get rid of the vibrations.. Just kiddin.

When I dropped off my car for the buy-back, the lady did a car inspection.. "hmm tire tread is very good".. well DUR, you put 3 sets of them on in the last year.

Dat was a nasty pothole, here in atl it's just unevenly paved/sunken roads so it's wavy, then they finally crack and the right side of the roads by the curbs are just evil . Then they get laden with the drainage grates. And the other famous Atlanta habit of just digging up a 3 foot square section of the road in the middle of the lane for something, then put those godawful roadplates on it for a month that slide over and eat people, then pave it with a half-assed job and it sinks and makes a nice pit. All 4 of my rims were scratched on the TL when I gave it back. Honda is famous for the wheels having no bead protection.

In nyc, we call a hole like that, just a blemish in the road. We have pot holes, that will take your whole front end for a four foot downward vertical ride. LOL
When we had mayor guilliani here, they called him the pothole mayor, trying to make fun of him, because potholes were a priority to him. god bless him. Since he left, pothole city is back.
