WTF! TL-S + Snow = RWD performance??

So, my 06 TL was driven in snow blizzards and drove like a FWD car should even with my SUMMER UHP tires on it !!! minimal slipping, great traction and good stability on the road... very little VSA action

right now, we've got like... 1/2" of snow and my new car is ALLLLL over the road... i mean, every traffic light, even the slightest amount of throttle, and the car starts to go sideways and the VSA light flashes like crazy!!

is it because of the bigger increase in HP/TQ? (227whp 197tq VS 261whp 238tq) or is it because the stock Michelin MXM4 tires really suck...I mean honestly, my BLACKURA never gave me a problem in the snow and i ran Dunlop Sport SP MAXX summer tires and/or the Pilot PS2 tires... but this car w/ the MXM4 tires suckssssss.... i only bought FWD because of its ability to maintain itself in inclimate weather

just wanted to vent a little... anybody else feel their TL-S or s/c TL isnt up to par in the wet and slippery weather??

Nope. My '07 TL-S does fine in snow/ice/wet. I suspect it's the MXM4's you've got on. I had them taken off before taking delivery, and replaced with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S's. Lot's of threads on how crappy the MXM4's are...especially in the wet.

ive read plenty of treads that the tl sucks in snow, its wasnt to bad for me when it snowed in atlanta, it rarely snows here, but there was a day were it was pretty heavy snow, wasnt to bad...

i believe its the tires tho.. to many peel outs ruining your tires?

well, im watching the news right now, and they said it was a "special combination of snow flakes and temperatures" that made it exceptionally slippery today... i gotta 21 mile drive to a 6PM class.. this is gonna suck... lol

I find the stock tires are not very good at handling snow at all. Lot's of VSA action.

My S/C TL has performed remarkably well in the snow. I mean, I can't drive it like normal, but if I'm light on the throttle and control my braking with engine braking, then it does fine. the only thing it doesn't do to hot is turning... like if i'm going 10-15mph and need to turn left at the intersection it'll turn my nose slightly, but the car will still go "straight"... but a little tug on the e-brake fixes that. just enough to bring the rear around to comply with the turn. =]

oh and this is with the Stock michelin's

I'm running with Toyo Proxes 4's on stock rims on my '04 TL and drove in these bad conditions on LI this evening--- car performed like a champ -- other cars were all over the road. The stock EL42's made me feel like I took my life in my hands whenever a rain drop fell. Tires make all the difference but today's weather is pretty bad for driving.

our cars gotta be linked somehow,(WDP brethren) and great minds think alike. this is scarry cuz I was thinking the same shit. I throw a code, you throw a code.
your car act's up, mine has to act up.

same shit,(vsa light and alittle slippage) just gotta ease up and tell about 150 of the 286 horses to chill at the stable.

Holy crap 2 hrs to drive 25 miles home.
At the beginning of my trek I had to brake at 5 mph, it felt like massive ABS pumping!!
At least mine wasn't slipping all over the roads.

I think the stock 07/08 TL owners can contest the EL42 Turanza worse than garbage/stock Michelins. took me 1.5 hours to drive 10 miles home. kept it in 2nd gear the whole time. I guess the sportronic shift comes in handy in times like these

the yok AVS ES100's that i originally had with the A-spec was horrible in snow it would slide every damn turn.

to save a bit of money I had picked out some Raptor's because it seemed like i was running the treads thin in 5-6 months anyway, and they actually surprised me because it was better in the snow., but yea, the weather in the past day or 2, this snow is not really snow, it's closer to pieces of mini hail, so anything with summer performance tires are gonna slip. I was driving in my friends Cayman S and it was scary as fuck, at least the TL is "big" ; in the cayman i was scared anything that slid into me would crumble the chasis lol

this is precisely the reason why i might go with that REALLY REALLY old thread about tire fitment, the one where th guy got wider tires to mimick the BMW setup? i think it'd really be worth it in situations like this, and it provides some protection on your rims too

Pick up a set of Pirelli 210 Sotozero's for the winter. They are a winter performance tire and are perfect for the TL

I tell you... earlier today when it first began my car was like a RWD `88 Mustang

once the snow accumulated.. she did alright... 25mph solid on the LIE around 7pm, no VSA lights at all!!!

i do think it had something to do with the type of snowfall we had this afternoon and the crappy Michelins...

i must say though, the biggest complaints on this forum was the EL42's... i feel bad for those folks on a day like today!!

for some reason, i always thought that wider was BAD in snow conditions... are winter tires usually more narrow??

Either way... last year i left my Dunlop Sport SP Maxx (UHP summer) 235/35/19's on in a snow blizzard, and the car was a champion...

haha how bad is it out on the island? i know the expressway and the highway are probably more or less fine unless it starts to really drop, the amount of cars going over the roads out on LI means that everything just turns to slush in a matter of hours lol...

out here in St. Louis, it's fucking stupid, my new rotors have all these rust spots from the ridiculous amounts of salt the city is throwing around...and it's still not helping, w/e shit is falling out of the sky right now is closer to ice than it is to snow...by that i mean, when it was "snowing" today, it was basically mini hailing and all that shit was just bouncing all over the place.

I heard the Falken Ziex's also did pretty well in the snow, though we're all just circle jerking here..lol i mean, we're all just talking about straight Z performance tires in snow...LOLOLOL... but honestly i'd rather KNOW how to handle bad snow days and enjoy good grip in the summer than to have mediocre grip all year around lol

hmm you may be right about this, need an expert to post!

i jsut assumed a larger width meant there was more traction, tho i could be wrong and a larger surface area might just make it more slippery

honestly i think the real probelm will be FDR drive and connecting roads in that area and the cross island parkway, for some reason those two areas have always been shitty when it came to freezing season

Cross island generally floods because of the geographic layout... especially when heading northbound towards the BX

IMHO- the TL/TL-S does not suck in the snow- the tires you have on it suck. Get some dedicated snows and then come tell us the difference you see if any.

I think it's just this blend of snow, my TL has snows on it, and it felt especially slippery today. I'm still under suspicion that the dealer rotated my tires on me though and the front that had more tread went to the back and that's why i'm experiencing this.

Same here, I was sliding on 5 mph turns. Never had a problem in the snow with my 04. The EL42s handled much better than these MXM4s.

Snow? What's that? Oh, yeah......that's that white stuff I saw falling during the Green Bay/Seattle Playoff Game, right? We don't get much snow here in Vegas (thank God!!).
Well, anyways, if your rollin with the stock Michelins........those are garbage!! It has rained here a few times since getting my 2008 CBP Type S, and all I can say is WTF!!?? Those crap Michelins were all over the road!! I slid everytime I tried to corner! JUNK.
As we speak, I am looking at tirerack for some REAL tires (Summer tires that have grip).
Good Luck in that snow..........YUCK!!

ya know whats funny, when i got my 08 TL-S in the summer, it didnt feel as grippy as my blackura, and i never really thought to think about the tires

funny thing is, everybody says the MXM4s are garbage, but they are like $250 a tire!!

check out the feedback from tirerack.com on these tires

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Pilot+HX+MXM4

bad reviews, and low ratings... funny... almost $40k car, and crap tires..... slap some dunlops, toyos or bridgestones on these bad boys

out of curiosity, when you get the SUMMER TIRES from Acura, what tires do they use??

OK, so my experience today.... I was driving for over 4 hours, had go back to Brooklyn to NJ twice (forgot important stuff at work)

The ride was a nightmare, but I must say my TLS was driving like a dream, I kept the rpms under 2K, it was driving beautiful...I hit a few big piles of snow and mush but I still felt confident enough...I can only imagine how much better traction will be when I will get rid of my stock Michelins.

One thing I did notice the rear defroster sucks big time! I kept it on for whole drive, and I still couldn't see anything.

hilarious. i agree... plus the TL already has such a smaller rear windshield... +15% tints DOES NOT HELP... i wanna seriously hardwire my rearview camera so i can just turn it on and watch the people behind me lol...

do you mean the Yokohama AVS ES100's? or you mean like the "Summer tires" option for the new cars?

the only thing that made me feel better tonight was looking on the side of the roads of an uphill portion of the highway littered with 7 series, CLS, S-class, and mustangs with thier hazards on, spinning their tires and inching their way up the incline.

Quick Reply: WTF! TL-S + Snow = RWD performance??
