Winter fitment for Automatic TL
I am looking at buying set of winter tires.
So far I found
205/65/15
215/65/15
215/60/15
205/60/16
205/55/16
215/55/16 <- TR recommendation
Do you think I can fit 15" steel rims on my TL? I'd save bunch on tires if I could.
Also what could be an issue if I change diameter by more than 3%/.75inch? Other than speedo

Why would you not use the 17" rim that came with the car for snow tires? I mean...save money? You could go without snow tires.....that would save you a LOT of money? The fact is, you ARE trying to save money by putting snow tires on....by not wrecking! I would NEVER suggest skimping on the fundage when you are trying to save money....it ususally ends up costing more compared to doing it the right way the first time.

in Canada, winter tires are a MUST HAVE.
original size 17" tires are not doing very good in the snow (too wide)
215-55-16 can go, but i've also seen a few clients run 205-60-16 (skinnier is better in deep snow).
15" won't fit
it's cheaper to get 16" rims+tires than 17" tires only (17" winter tires are about $1100+ range)
+ won't damage summer wheels
+ save $$$ when switching wheels instead of mounting and balancing twice a year.

If 15" won't fit, my choices are (narrow is better for snow)
1. 205/60/16
This will put less miles. Circumference increases by 1.4%
2. 205/55/16
This will put more miles but tires are cheaper than #3
3. 215/55/16
This will put same mile as stock
My question is what happens if I change the diameter by more than 3%/.75inch? Some website said I'm gonna bust my brake (1010tires.com)

winter tire
I use 235-45-17 dunlop winter sport m3 on a extra set of oem wheels.Unless you don't care about how the car handles when it's not snowing I would stick with the same size tires and wheels that came with the car. My tl handles pretty well in dry and much better in the snow with this set-up. I have an extra set of 2005 oem wheels in good shape if your interested.

It not a good idea to venture out of the 3% range .. I just went with 225/45/17 winters on my stock rims.

Just had snows & rims put on Saturday.
Put on Toyo Garit KX 215/55/16 on Honda 16" steel CRV rims & the TMPS fit without any need for adjustment.
After 3 weeks of calling around Acura dealers they all told me that the TPMS sensors only fit Honda rims and they modify aftermarket rims with spacers and "O" ring.
That is not true, the Acura/Honda TPMS sensors are adjustable.
If you unscrew the stem from the sensor module, you will dicover that it is mounted on swivel that can be adjusted.

bust brake: when I go to 1010tires.com and click "wheel calculator" and put some #s in, it says I should stay within 3% range otherwise it could lead to brake failure.
I have set my minds on 205/60/16. There are TL owners hvae that setup already.
It clears caliper by few milimeters(thanks to Type S Zero).
My other question is should I go for "studdable" tire without stud OR go with winter tire(non-suddable). Winter tires are hot items in northwest right now and those are my only choices.

could I swap studded and all season several times through a winter? How much stress would it create on lug nuts? Studded seems to be my only option on ice

My final contenders are
1. Kumho KW-17
2. Goodyear Nordic (Ultra Grip 500 in EU)
3. Arctic Claw (Private lable)
Eliminated options are
1. Winterforce M+S (Bridgestone) : cornering issue
2. Michelin X-Ice : $200 more than all above
3. Hankook W409 : couldn't justify $50 difference
4. Kumho KW19 : couldn't justify $50 difference
5. Uniroyal Tiger Paw Snow and Ice: I'd rather trust Kumho
6. Hankook W300 : couldn't justify $50 difference
#1,2,3 are all studdable but I'm getting it without studded. I'm getting them in 205/60/16 size with Honda/Acura steel rims. I'm kinda convinced on Goodyear because it says "Ice over winter" compound which means it should have micro biting compound.
