TPMS Question for 06 TL

Hey everyone,

I'm probably a newb for asking this question but I was wondering if anyone knew how the TPMS works for an 06 TL? I just got an 06 TL and am thinking about changing my rims. I heard that the TPMS sensors are on the rims themselves and that you can switch the sensors from one rim to another but I'm not really sure how it all works. How would I be able to change rims and make sure that I keep the TPMS?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I believe the TPMS sensors are part of the valvestem. I guess they are transferrable to your new wheels as long as you transfer the valvestem to the new wheel. I would assume the accuracy of them would be maintained.

Is the valve stem on the 06 TL stock rims transferrable to any aftermarket rims?

most 1 piece wheels will accept the sensors. multi-piece wheels won't.

don't mean to hi-jack, but do you think other TPMS sensors will work with the OEM monitoring system as long as they're running on the same frequency?

I would recommend contacting the manufacturer of the wheel. They can answer your question.

I bought tires off the tirerack (excellent service). The guy was able to check if the particular rim I was interested in had the right grooves for the TPMS sensors, which they did. He sold me Honda/Acura sensors for my new rims (so now I have TPMS on my summer and winter wheels), although I prob paid to much (55$/sensor).

After I got my new wheels on I was disheartened to see that the TPMS was reading 400 on all 4 wheels. As I drove away planning to call tirerack first thing in the a.m. each sensor kicked in 1 by 1 (musta needed some driving time) after 1-2 miles. I checked with a manual pressure gauge and they were bang on.

Hope this helps.

55$ a sensor is cheap I think. Could have sworn they were 150$ a piece for my 350Z.

WOW Thanks GM. My 97 Pontiac GTP has a TPMS. While not as sophisticated as the ones found on the 06 TL, it does the job. The one on my 97 simply tells you that a tire has low pressure. I do have to get out and check to see which tire it is. It has save me several times including yesterday. The TPMS was standard equipment on the 97 Pontiac.

A suspect Pontiac use the cheaper method of using the ABS sensors to detect if the tire pressure is low. This method has no way to tell you the tire pressure of each tire, and they only present you with an idiot light in the dash. It takes a decent loss of pressure to trip the idiot light. Since TPMS has become mandated feature most lower end cars will use this ABS method to present the driver with an idiot light when pressure is low.

It takes 10lbs to trip the light, but it works. Cheap or not. The wheel doesn't need to be reinvented to work. The RL already uses GM's OnStar for there navi system for live traffic updates
