Toyo Proxes 4 or Avon 550s owners w/ > 20k miles pls

Tire shopping again, and there are more people here in 3G TL who've tried Toyo Proxes and Avon 550s.

I specifically want to hear from those who've gotten 20k or more out of the tires.

How bad is the noise with them?
How good is the tread, and performance at that mileage?

VERY tough decision. Tire Rack's reviews for the Avons over 15-20k miles are uniformly bad on noise, but good on treadwear and handling. Can't find objective reviews on the Toyos as Tire Rack doesn't sell them and the reviews at 1010tire.com are absolutely useless.

I guess the Falkens are out of the running based on your personal experience?

No, Falken doesn't produce ZIEX ZE512s in the RL A-Spec wheel size.

I've had the Toyos for about 15K now. I can't say that they are noisier now than they were before. It is wearing well.

However. Although it is not noisier than when I first put them on, there has always been a drone when you go over 50 mph. I got used to it, but I still don't really like it.

When I end up wearing these out, I'll probably look elsewhere. Besides that the grip is decent, the looks are good, and the wet performance is good as well (don't know about snow, since I have Nokians for that).

I have to say Toyo Proxes4 ROCK
Even though I've had them for less than 10k miles I have to admit they are the best so far for me. But that is my opinion. Someone might say somehing else

I've had mine since April 06. And i love them. Its a great tire for a daily driver. I just got TEIN SS coilovers installed and I don't notice any irregular tire wear. Great tire for the $$.

I have to agree that these tires are really good. I like how they feel in the rain.

I have toyos with almost 20k. Now that I've had the Pilot A/S on a loaner when mine was in, I can say that they are louder. Hum occurs after rotation, but goes down over time (after about 4-5000 miles it was about 1/2 the original sound. Still there though.

Dry - excellent handling
Wet - really good
Snow - good but not great
Slush - fair. I have no clue why this is it's achillies heel when it does so darn well in snow and wet. Go figure. Chicago is a good litmus test though.

No, I'm really looking for an all-season tire to handle the frequent rain we get here during warm weather in Cleveland.

Toyo Proxes it is! I can get them in the RL A-Spec size from Edge Racing for only $150.

To be totally honest, I was actually hoping to try the Pirelli Pzero Nero M/S but they are a three-month backorder at Tire Rack.

I'm sure with SH-AWD it'll do better in slush!

Yea, I guess I don't have to worry too much about the rain since it only rains during Monsoon season for about 2 months. But I can say I love my T1R's. The tires have been great!

I had the Toyo Proxes 4s for 30K miles and the last 2-3K I think they were dangerous on wet surfaces. Maybe I let them go too far but I was expecting more than 30K. I will say they are very nice for the price. They are also very noisy. I didn't notice as much b/c I typically am in my car by myself with the radio on. Everytime my wife got in the car with me, she mentioned - "what is that noise?" She can't believe the tires humm that loud. So, I went with the new Bridgestone Potenza RE960 AS PP(this is a 17" and am not sure if they have an 18"). They have a 40K tread warranty and are a lot quieter. They seem to stick as well as the Toyos and have no flat spotting like the crappy el-42s. I can't give you a definite thumbs up b/c I just got them this week. I paid $180/tire.

I think 25-30k miles (1 1/2 years with my driving) is about what I realistically would expect from a UHPAS, 300 treadwear tire. One thing I've noticed is that ALL the tires in this class are reported as noisy as they age. We'll see how it goes and next time around, will try the Pirellis. Of note: I seriously looked at those Bridgestones, too.....but they were also on serious back order at the Tire Rack and are tough to find locally, too.

I have to say the Bridgestones are much quieter than my Toyos ever were but I wouldn't say they were silent. I got them in 2 days at Discount Tire.

I have the TOYO Proxes 4 with 13000 miles . I find them far superior to the EL42 . One thing I noticed is that the car rides better with 35lb. of air. I ran the fronts with 40 lb. because I had a slow leak. No problem with the ride. When I got it fixed I had the service guy set the tires at 35lb. The car seems to roll betterand the tires are less squirmy around turns. The wear does not seem excessive. Please supply feedback about how much air you put in your tires. I live on Long Island NY and I would say the roads are average. The car ride is still plush. That may be a compliment to the suspension components. Thanks for your comments.

So, u have them at 35lb front and rears?
When I got the rims and tires they were set at 40lb fronts and 37lb rears. I have to admit that the ride is little bit bumpy. Let me know waht u think!!!

I've got about 10k on my Proxes 4's (I can't believe it's been that long!). When I had them put on, they set them at 35 all around. I wasn't too happy with the wear I was experiencing, so I set them at 40 the other week. The ride is a little bumpier, but the car handles a lot better; I'll need a few more weeks to see how the wear does, but logic dictates it will improve.

I just ordered a second set. Key word there...SECOND set. Really liked the first set, especially for the price. I liked the Pilot A/S sports more, but at over 2x price, not that much. Got 29,500 on 'em, and they're ugly. Getting the new shoes on thursday....

Just got 'em on yesterday, and with the storm in chicago hitting right now it's been a HUGE upgrade over my old, worn ones. I probably should have changed them out at around 27,500 vs waiting until almost 30k...fyi.

Grip in slush and snow is wonderful!
