Question about lowering my TL-S

Hello all!

Forgive me for what might feel like a noob question to some, but one thing I am not very knowledgeable about is suspension, so I figured I would ask the great members of this community for a little bit of knowledge.

I have a 2008 TL Type-S, I was wondering if it possible to lower the car a little bit (maybe an inch or two) with the current Type-S suspension on it, or would I need to go aftermarket to achieve this?

I did quite a bit of searching but only came up with aftermarket solutions/advice, which I would love to upgrade to sometime in the future, but was curious if I could get a slight drop with my current suspension, and if so would it be an ok choice to make for safety and ride quality sake.

Thanks much in advance for any insight

these questions are not here to make fun of or chastise you or patronize you.
they are merely for your learning purposes.

think about a general spring.
it has a set size.
it has a set spring rate.

if set size and spring rate; how are you going to lower it without compromising spring rate?

How would you lower it (safely) with non-adjustable components?

Thanks for the help fella's!

You answered my question, the question I should have asked and did not know the answer to was if my Type-S suspension was adjustable or not, now I know it's not.

Thanks for clearing this up for me guys

You can lower your car through lowering springs or through KONI shocks with stock springs. Just install the struts with the lower perch and it lowers the car 20 mm.

If you're asking "can I get away with just doing springs?"...the answer is yes. That's all I did and the wheels never went of spec.

Lowering Springs

What is a good brand to go with for lowering springs?

Main 2 would be H&R and Teins...really no complaints from either.

I have the same car as you. My daily driver. I recently just did Eiback Sport springs. Lowered the car 1" all around. Very slightly firmer in nrmal driving but get on the twisties and the springs are much tighter. It's the perfect fit and feel. Perfect!!!

I have Tanabe's and they lowered the car by a good amount. The ride is still nice, and handles fairly well.

Glad I used the all powerful search function!
Was wondering the same thing.

So final verdict, is it or is it not cool to do slight lowering springs on the stock type S struts?

we have shocks and not struts.
you can use lowering springs on stock shocks, however, if the original shocks have lots of miles on them, I'd buy new shocks. SHocks degrade with time.
Lots of people have used lowering springs on their TL with NO ill effects.

How many miles do you have on your stock shocks?

You can run lowering springs on stock shocks and be just fine, but do keep in mind that it will cause your OEM shocks to wear out much faster than usual. When that happens you will be upgrading your shocks and doing all the labor again, thus it's a much better idea, if you can save/afford to do both at the same time

Edit: I find it cool that I was the one asking the questions, now I can answer (some) question just because this amazing place I've learned soooo much

Right?! This forum is great!

The only reason I'm even thinking about doing this is the fact that I just had two new OEM rear struts installed. I have been looking into the cost of possibly redoing the front ones as well and then doing springs all around.

Good to know springs will work with OEM struts though! Thanks!

Indeed.

The most often suggested springs are usually: Tein, H&R, or Eibach

On average you would be looking at getting between 1.0' - 1.4' drop out of a set of street springs.

Allow me to step in to ask a question...
For those who have gone with lowering springs out of these brands, for long highway drives, have you seen any difference in the comfort of the ride? I assume there are others that share my same thought process that, though it will look and handle a bit better with a slightly lower stance, you do not in any way want to take away from the luxury ride of a TL.

With the Eibach 1" lower springs, no loss in comfort at all for highway drives. If you hit a large bump or whole it will hit a bit harder than stock. You will not be dissapointed with the ride. It does improve handling a lot on the back roads. I just did a nice ride through the mountais of N.C. near Boone and the car stays flat and very responsive. So much so that my tires are noe the weak link in the handling. Time for some 255/40 18's.......
