Painting your own wheels problem

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could tell me why my wheels appear to be dusty at the end? followed every step, did a really good job sanding and prepping, no luck and this is the second time ive tried it and same result. I put 2 coats of primer, 3 of paint, 2 of clear. Primer is Krylon Rust something, and the paint is engine duplicolor black.

attached are some pictures, let me know.

Also, I dont want to hear any of this... go get them powedercoated its so much better, I KNOW.

Rattle cans do have a tendency to leave a rough surface. Overspray could be the cause. Did you try wetsanding with 1500 grit? That should smooth out the roughness; just be careful to not over sand...

You could of held the can too close to the wheels.

The can held too far could also cause roughness as well. Spray can paint tends to flash very fast. You want to keep the coat wet and cover the part fast.

When its too far, the atomized paint can start to dry in the air before it hit the surface, if its a paint that flashes very fast combined with hot, dry surrounding air.

Try polishing compound too, on the cured coating.

Interesting explanation, thanks for posting. Mine got a little rough as well, but not until the 3rd and 4th coats. I'll have to pay attention to that if I try it again.

It could be either the paint itself or the clear coat. When I did my rims severea years back i dnt exactly remember if it was the paint or clear coat but once i sprayed em the wheel turned into a weird texture. i had to re-sand and change (again dnt recall if it was paint or clear coat)

it's also important to use all the same type of paint, primer, clear.

you dont want to mix and match different brands.

I'm thinking of painting my rims too. Any other advice? How do I go about doing this? I'm pretty new here.

Sharing info, but most titles(questions) that new members ask discussed numerous times before on this forum. Search is your friend. Hell, I searched all the time when i was newbie. I still do. Search function on AZ sucks IMO. Google is your buddy!!! Like shark said, try google search. It shows everything. If you want to search specifically for TL, just type question and type acurazine or 3g tl next to that question. It will show a lot of related threads.

Powder coating was a good move. The finish will be much more durable.
