My 2004 TL keeps getting flat tires!

Hi everyone.

I have a 2004 TL with the stock rims. I have had it since 2007. Over that time, I have lost track of how many flat tires I have had. If I had to guess I would say 7 or 8. I just got my second one in the past two months. Now, my daughter drives it so something needs to be done.

All of the flat tires come while driving the car. The tire will not be low on air, not leaking, and all of a sudden, flat tire. On all but one, there was no nail or other obvious problem. I suspect that it must be a problem with the rims? I did some looking a few years ago, and based on googling, thought that maybe there was a defect that was causing the bead seal to be lost. When I got the last flat about two months ago, I was thinking that maybe it was one problem rim, and had plans to replace that one. It was the right rear, but this time it was the right front.

I'm not an enthusiast, just a family guy on a budget and this car has been incredibly reliable other than the flat tires. Any suggestions on what I should do? Should I replace all the rims? Can I look in a junkyard for new ones, or is this a common problem with these rims? I can't imagine how much new rims will cost? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

are they bent? have they been hit? that could be the problem. flat meaning nail or it just loses seemingly out of nowhere.

schrader valve's can also fail, letting air go silently and unnoticeable until its flat.

so, an inspection of the wheels are in order. need to find out if wheels are round. next you'll need to look for leaks. dunk a full aired up tire into a trough filled with water, leaks are characterized by air bubbles in water.

a mom and pop tire shop can do this for you for pennies or even for free

Completely agree with you Justn, mom and pop tire shops are the best for that. They care about their business more than chains usually and they won't hesitate to replace a valve or reseat the tire and check the wheel for imperfection for usually very cheap.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think the problem could have been valves, the tires aren't gradually losing pressure. These are all just sudden failures while driving where the air pressure is fine just before. All of the tires have had to be replaced because it has happened at driving speed, most times on the highway.

I will try to find a knowledgeable tire shop. The chains have pretty much taken over tire sales around here.

I did find these with a quick google search. Any ideas for new rims?

When you say the black market, do you have specific ideas? Do you mean Craigslist? I will look there.

If you're considering getting new rims, take a look at the MSW Type 12 bright silver from TireRack. I'm using them for my winter tires and they've been fine and they look great IMO:

No, no... The black market is on AZ, here. It's what we call our "for sale" section. Search around for it.

You can try craigslist too, but you'd likely find wheels here easier.

Thanks, they do look great, I will consider that. After a quick search on Craigslist, I found these, it says should fit later model TL's. Will these fit a 2004 TL?

What do I need to check on rims to know if they will fit my car or my tires? Sorry, very new to this.

the 4G TL's are 5x120, 3G TL is 5x114.3 so these will not work for your car.

The easiest solution is often the most obvious one. You should take the car to a tire shop and have them figure it out before you start making all these assumptive purchases. Their fix could be a lot cheaper than buying a whole new set of wheels.

Thanks for the replies. I took the car to my local Acura dealer and local tire store. The Acura dealer said that the place that has been doing my tires was probably not sanding the rims where the tire seals to it. He suggested sanding the rims and not getting new rims. The tire dealer said the same thing basically. He said that the new chemical that they have been treating the roads with in the winters here in CT has been corroding lots of things including allow rims. He said he has seen a huge increase in this type of thing. I will have the rims sanded.

That is what I came in to post. The last time I mounted a set of tires (18" sumitomos on an Accord) I had to sand both sides of every rim due to crud build up.... And stock tires came off
