Muteki lug nuts are junk

I put my red muteki open ended lug nuts on, and took them off for the first time today to rotate my wheels. The paint has literally peeled off from the lug nuts. So many guys on here recommend them, did I get a bad batch or whats going on? I'll get a pic of them in here tonight after work. What lugs do you guys recommend me getting now?

I've seen that happen many times before. It's usually because the OEM wheel stud hole just isn't big enough for aftermarket lugs.

I had a set of Muteki's that the coating looked horrible after just installing them and a set that look perfect after several removals and installs. I am not sure what their deal is.

Also, I think just as soon as you hit them with a 4 way to take them off, they will chip.

I got these gorilla lugnuts just for the sake of saving money at the time. Have had them for over a year with no problems...no chips or fading. I think they also come in a few different colors

Me and some other members have the 7 sided super lock nuts from project mu. They are a black chrome color with teal tips, but you could paint the tips some other color since the socket doesn't touch the tip. They are steel and don't chip at all.

Previous muteki lugs I had chipped badly, especially if they aren't black or chrome. The Mcgard and gorillas are very durable also. Most aluminum lugs will chip from my experience

Well that was $80 down the drain. So what should I look for? Ones that not made from aluminum and haven't been painted?

Back when I was looking to get a set of teal Muteki lugs I found a thread about fading lugs. Apparently red lug nuts are the most prone to fading/issues, and black or chrome are the most durable. Also, it's possible you could have gotten a fake set, there's fakes all over the place and the thread went into detail on how to determine if your set is legit. Also in that thread, they did a comparison between a real set vs a fake set and the fakes faded much quicker than the real ones (obviously). Unfortunately I can't remember what I searched to find that info, otherwise I'd post it.

I've got a set of black Gorilla lugs on my Challenger that have been great with no chipping or fading, so I'd recommend checking them out.

no those are different, but not sure i would trust that site. plus it says $22 EACH, so that would be well over $400 haha.

there is only one authorized USA reseller of project mu, and that is mackin industries. they supply authentic project mu to an ebay seller called tuneshop (i did a lot of research from both to make sure it's legit).

i was going to paint the tips a different color but the teal grew on me so i painted my brembos satin lagoon (similar to teal).

$109 isn't bad at all. Do you think the close ended lugs are better than the open?

If you bought them on eBay, they're more than likely fake.

I have red as well and sure enough they are chipping like hell. Not to mention are a pain in the ass to get them off if you have the wheels I do.

I'll me in the market for some lugs myself. Probably go with some project mu lugs.

it's your call and what look you like. i don't like the super long open ended lug nuts. if you don't use anti seize on those, you are susceptible to having your lugs rust and/seize during winter months

i like closed end better

I have the project kics lugs with the acorn ends that spin so there's no damage to the rim. Guess what $250 for the and the acorn rings all split in half. Mackin industries will replace under warranty but the hoops I have to go thru to do it just made me lose respect for their products and service. I need to find a new set of lugs with locks.

I'm surprised nobody has said this yet but...you shouldn't be putting lugs for aftermarket wheels on an OEM wheel. The seating is different.

I have Gorilla lugs right now and have had 0 issues. No fading or chipping yet and they've been off a few times. Ive had Volk before and even those did not hold up as well as the Gorillas are and they were 3x as much.
