i have close to 90k miles on my 04 tl so ill probably be replacing the struts and shocks soon.I've also wanted to lower the car for a while now so i figured this would be the perfect opportunity. i want coilovers so i can raise it in the winter, i narrowed it down to two brands based off of reviews, megans or tein basics, does anyone have any experience with either or an opinion to offer? they'd be much appreciated

 

You'll have to search for your answers. I depends on what you're looking for, ( comfort ride, low and stiff, ect ) use Tein or Megan as key words

 

im in the same boat rite now just decided to do this mod and looking between the two

 

i decided to go with tein basic, i read that the megans are a little bounce when you want them to be stiff in the lower setting. the teins supposedly ride smooth when up high and really tighten down when slammed. a friend in down town cleveland just informed me that he has had teins on his tl. he has it slammed and said it handles wonderfully yet doesnt chatter your teeth when you hit small bumps.

 

I believe that exactly is what he wants to know! A really poor answer, for that kind of answer, would of been better to keep it to youself!

Go with the TEIN, right on the smooth when high, and a nice stiff ride when lowered!

 

Teins Basic only let you adjust the height but not the dampening and the Megans let you do both, adjust height and dampening.

I have megans and love how comfortable they are. I can raise or lower still if I choose.

I've heard the tein are also comfortable but dont have experience with it

 

I have basics on my car and there really comfortable and smooth, but if I hit a big dip in the road ill bottom out. I plan on upgrading to something a little stiffer in the near future.

 

It is tough to say which coilover is better. I have Tein's on my car and they're great but I've heard really good things about the Megan's as well. I say, whichever one you get, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

You have to be more specific in what you're looking for: adjustable ride height, adjustable damping, set ride height, comfort, firmness, maximum performance, durability?

 

There's a backorder on Teins due to the crisis in Japan (I think)...
But I'd wait it out...sometimes I wish I had separate preload to slam it...but I'm as low as I need to be and it drives awesome!

I'm on Tein SS.

 

I definitely want to be able to control how soft or stiff it rides so I would go with the Tein ss if i went the Tein route. Im looking for a smooth ride that can handle small bumps but still take corners on the road, but i want to be able to tighten it up and slam it for tracks and stuff. But thanks for all the responses, sounds like I'll be happy with either of them.

rockstar143, what is seperate preload? can you not slam it with the tein ss?

 

^not like megans or other coils... (for tein ss) To lower the car you have to lower the spring which shortens suspension travel and decreases performance

yup, the height adjustment and spring tension are separate and can be adjusted independently

 

for some reason, people still say that Teins are the most comfortable, even when they're at the lowest they can go, yet they handle amazingly. whereas people complain about the harshness of the megans. im so torn between the two.

teins prob are comfortable... but I've never been in one so I cant compare. I was skeptical about megans as well, but am VERY satisfied w/ how comfortable they are as my daily and think its the best bang for ur buck.

teins seem to be a great product from personal opinion.. but megan's independent height/spring load adjustment sold it for me

 

so maybe its just all in the way you set it up, people that say they're harsh must not know what they're doing. theres one last factor that plays into my decision, how much lower will the car be from stock when the coils are as high as they will go. i live in ohio and im going to have issues with snow if my cars too low. do you know how much of a hight difference it is from stock when you have your car all the way up?

 

I BELIEVE ~1-1.5" lower than stock....but its very do-able for daily driving in snow.. I dont know this personally, but many can vouch for driving in snow w/ ~2" drops

 

man, i wish this was an easier decision. and at 17 a thousand dollars is a lot to throw into something that might not be right. ill prob end up going with teins just because of the ohio roads, but im not sure yet. if i was in ca or florida i would forsure go with the megans

 

roads arnt perfect here... I drive over SHITTY roads daily.. and the megans are treatin me well... plus megans are cheaper at ~$810

 

i gotta have my order in by mid next week, ill let you know what i end up choosing. megans sound amazing, but teins have a lot of fans too, we'll see

i haven't been on a TL with Tein SS even though lots of people claims they are the best for our cars!! However, i was in AckTL05's TL and he have Megans with 2" drop and we went for a little ride to buy some supplies for the accord mod and i was satisfied with how they feel and performed!! i guess either one would be ok to buy!!

 

get the A spec sport suspension made by Acura. made for Summer Winter Spring and Fall. and handles like a shining star

heres my 2c.

Teins: The most over rated coilover in production...their upper end coils are quality, but the basics and the SS are, imo, super overated. Very harsh ride, and bad adjustability.

Megans: They are a budget coilover, so dont expect some perfect track oriented coilover, but for daily driving they are well worth the money. Very comfortable, very adjustable (height and dampening) and after complete ABUSE dailying these for over a year, ive had no problems with them. This is a pic to show how much i abused these:

My conclusion: neither. BC Racing makes a coilover for our car and where Megans are totally worth the money, BCR's are totally worth MORE than what you buy them for..youre looking around 1k, which is at least in the ball park of megans and tein basics, and you get to choose your own spring rate AND custom valving to match for no additional costs..if youre concern is getting low, specify "extreme drop", again for no added cost, and they will get you lower than megans. adjustable dampening and everything..ive ridden on these coils in the past on other vehicles, and i just got some for my TL..ill be doing a complete write up on them soon. another plus is you can purchase them from Throwdown Performance (i am in no way affiliated, just a happy customer) who is an official vendor on acurazine.

Glad you are enjoying the BC's. Definitely an extremely popular coilover that I'd recommend to anyone in between these brands (altho we sell those too). It has several features that neither of the other two do and have a great reputation in the market, including customizable spring rates and cartridges. I have them personally on my daily... love them

 

i just saw this, ill try to get some pics up this weekend. ive been running 17" tsw's as my summer wheels so ill have to see if i took any pics of it with those on, i have the stocks with the snows on it now. my 18's come in next week, they should look good with the drop too.

LOL at Tein's being super overrated...I don't think the how low decafe had it is a representation of the type of lowering a typical aziner would be going for. Personally, not a fan of a car that low...and "dailying" should not be abuse on the car.


Tein's being overrated because they are called the "best", I agree...that's subjective...but providing a HARSH ride, that's a joke of a comment. I've had other coils on previous cars and no car I've had can match being able to be 3 inches lowered (or more) and still ride like stock. Sorry.
