Installing coilovers without a spring compressor

I had this idea in my head, but I wanna check with you guys before i try it.

If I take off the top hat bolt before taking out the stock suspension, can I avoid using a spring compressor to take the top hat off?

I would think that if i unbolt the top hat, and then raise the car and take out the suspension then it will just fall out apart.

What do you guys think?

I've heard of this method before but it's not recommended. It might br possible in the front, but good luck getting the top hat bolt off the rear while the coil is still on. Also, it'd be even harder to put the spring back on this way, it'd be nearly impossible to line everything up. Not worth the effort, spring compressors are free to borrow at your local autozone

Do it the right way and go rent a spring compressor at your local autozone for free. You might hear about someone who tried this and it worked but you might be the unlucky one whos spring or nut comes flying out at your face. It's not worth it.
I didn't know about the spring compressor years ago so I would put my wheel over the spring/shock and stand on it while unbolting the nut. I know, it was stupid. I was young and dumb LoL.
What kind of coilover you installing that don't have a top hat?

Always use a spring compressor. It may take longer, but it is definitely worth it.

It can be done without a spring compressor but it isn't recommended because you could hurt yourself if you do it incorrectly.
