Dealer wants $1600 to rechrome stock wheels

Yipes! When he came back from wherever he was getting this ghastly number from and handed it to me, I laughed out loud. The stock rims would be sent to Pasadena, chromed, sent back. $1600. I said, why on earth would anyone do that? For another couple hundred, I could buy the 18" pretty dealer rims I'd rather have. I then told him I could do the same thing via Ebay for $500. HE laughed. Got the big spiel about "how do you know they'll be around next year", etc. etc. I said for $500 I'll take my chance.

I'm not crazy about chrome (preferring the silver sparkle or more matte look), but was curious as I really dislike the stock rims. Still don't know what to do about the rim thing. Hate to spend the cash too.
I actually like the stock RL's alot better. They are also 17" x 8" but I think the other specs are off. I've still no real clue if they'd work or not.

The dealer also said there are no 18" tires that will handle snow. Huh? Wish I could just find a cheap set of 17" to use with the stock tires that look a bit better. But I'm tire stupid.

He then quoted me $1445 installed for the a-spec body kit.

That's complete BS. I have 18" Michelin Pilot Sport All/Season on my G35, and it handled the snow just fine, and that was even on a RWD car. I also have Continental ContiExtremeContact tires on my other car, (which also come in 18"), and they had phenominal snow traction. It actually didn't even engage ABS when I did a test panick stop in the last snow storm we got.

Couple hundred more? Look here. Acura of Escondido sells the 18" A-Spec wheels for $980 for all 4.

Those are extremely unreasonable prices. My dealership will haggle the price, it sounds like this guy wants to put his kids through college with your help.

at the dealer's response to you.

And the guy offered these prices with a straight face I'm sure. Luckily, you are a smart consumer and know that you can get these products cheaper online.

The body kit for the TL is currently on sale at hondacuraworld.com for $756 shipped, and it costs 2-300 for install depending on whether you go to a body shop or dealer. The wheels above are the lowest price you can get, too, and that ebay store is reputable.

End of story. You know what to do, now....

There's another option too....find a local metals shop that does chrome work and have them do it for you. I own a sailboat and had the winches all over my boat re-chromed as it would have cost $1000s to replace them all...and it cost about $200, local shop here in Chicago that does this type of work, which is probably the kind of place the dealer would end up using anyhow..lol.

Isn't chroming on aluminum alloy a black art that has to be executed correctly or the chrome will chip off easily ? I heard there were a few shops in the so cal area that pioneered this sort of thing.

Don't know about being a black art, but HERE is a Southern Cal company on eBay that's auctioning four chromed TL rims with a starting bid of $770 and free shipping. Careful, they have zero feedback.
