Best Performance Tire??
#2
If you're looking for 215/50-17 replacements the pickings are very slim. Not much hi-perf tires in 50-series (more touring style). If you're willing to change tires size to 235/45-17 there's a whole bunch available. Lots of guys are running Bridgestone RE730 will great success.
Hope this helps.

There are a few:
Pirelli PZero Rosso Asymetrico
Michelin Pilot Sports
Dunlop SP9000
Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions
Goodyear Eagle F1
Lawaia is right. To go to high performance, you gotta go wider.

I had both the Michelin Pilot Sports and the Bridgestone Potenza s-03 pole position. I prefer the pilot sports. It is a great water tire, provides great traction, and great braking. The look of the tread better is one of the best. I had to switch to the pole position when I upgraded my wheels to a size that would not allow me to put on the pilot sports. I regretted it. The problem was more with the offset. If you buy the pilot sports as with any high performance tire make sure you get some winter tires if you live in a snow climate. I use the Michelin Pilot Alpin. Great traction in snow. I put the snow tires on the factory wheels and put my high performance tires on chrome rims.

For what you pay for one of these rides, they will only put the best between you and the road.
If you don't believe us, buy a Falken Kumho. (say a few times you'll get it)
BTW, I have the Dunlop, they rock.

I always thought that Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc.. worked with the tire manufacturer to make a special tire for their "supercars" (like the F50)........but the 360 Modena, the XKR, and the 911 Turbo are all running P-Zero's.

Tire quality and $$$'s go hand in hand. Sure you could go out and buy Goodyear Eagle F1's for 3-4 bills a piece and have a great performance tire, or you could buy Bridgestone RE730 for 1-1/2 bills a piece and still have a decent performace tire but one that'll last you much longer. It all depends on how deep your pockets are. Unfortunately my pockets are as shallow as they get I need my tires to last as long as possible!

I'll only comment on tires I've had direct experience with, or that I've heard from reliable sources.
Falkens - I think the Ziex tires aren't that bad, wet traction isn't very good but otherwise not a bad tire. They don't cost that much, either. Treadlife has been good, but the one complaint that I have is that they don't "communicate" the road very well. Except bumps and potholes, of course.
BFGoodrich Comp T/A - Also not very good in wet weather, but very good otherwise. They wore down very quickly, though. Very good at communicating the road and handled very well.
Bridgestone S-02 Pole Position - Excellent tire. Wore a little quickly, but otherwise, outstanding. Handles well, great feel - then again, this was in a M3, so the car might have had a little to do with it.
I've heard the S-03s give up a bit to the S-02 as far as handling, but that they offer more ride and less tire noise.
