245/45/18 on 18Aspec wheels CAN I DO THIS?
I'm ready to put tires on my new 18inch ASpec wheels and wanted to go 245/45/18 I have the stock suspension 6speed 2005 tl. I wanted to make sure nothing will rub. I want the extra 5mlm to avoid damage to tires and make it more smooth.

My guess is 245/35ZR18 or 245/40ZR18 would be your best bet.

I wanted to protect the wheels as well. These have been great for me. The guy installing the tires said that this is as wide as I could go. I have a 2004, and have the 8.5" wheels. I think the '05+ come with 8" wheels. Your tire guy should be able to tell you.
Good luck.

Hey xkactetx...I got an 05' 6spd TL with stock suspension as well. And I just got the 18" A-Spec wheels. I was thinking about doing the 245/35-18....but when I asked the parts manager if it would rub, he simply didn't answer me and said "The sticker says 235/40-18. If you go with something else and your car doesn't drive well, don't come back and complain"
So I think I'm gonna go with 235/40-18 just to be safe...
The sticker also says that the recommended load rating should be 95W....I've been searching on tirerack for 235/40-18, but most results come back with a load rating of 91. Anyone out there with tires that have a load rating lower than 95? How does your TL handle?

^ You can go 245/40/18 with minimal speedometer variance. Some members have gone even wider (like hondafan) to go 255/40/18 with no issues.
I don't think you should go with the 45 series. :twocents:

These are my calculations on tire size and final Tire Diameter.
Basically the first one is the stock ratting for the 17. The factory 18s reccomend the 235/40 ZR18. They probably reccomend that size because it is the closest to 17s with little variance.
The sides of my Aspec rims stick out quite a ways.. 245 40 18 seems like the closest but will that be enough rubber to protect the bad boys from scratching the rims?
Is there any way to re-cal the speedometer if you put larger (or smaller) wheels on?
There is less of a spread if I put on 255/35s. The smaller wheels will give slightly more torque and it's only 3/10ths of an inch from stock..
Anyone see any error in my calcs?

Is this easier to read?
Tire Size _ : {Tire W (in)} {Side Wall (in)} {Tire Dia (in)} {% Diff} {Diff (in)}
235 45 17 : 9.25 4.16 25.33 0.00 0.00

Of the 255s which one is better? Closer to the actual speedometer with less space to the ground, or more space to the ground and a slower read speed on the speedometer..

Wow 265s are exactly the same diameter as the stock just about.. 0.02% different.
Is there any risk running tires this wide on the car? Will they blow out easier at speed? I sure like the idea of not scratching up the rims..

265 needs to go on a 9" wheel

And yes, 245/45/18 would give you too much height, since you bump up the rim size you have to reduce the tire size (diameter). Go to tirerack and read some of their tech articles for a full explanation of how this works or do a search online, they are really helpful.
Good luck.

Walk the walk
I plan to go with the 255/40/18 -nice picture by the way- I can't handle a another summer of curbing the rims with the 235/40/18. The 255 gives the extra protection with really insignificant difference between the 245, except price. The 265/35 is nice but mounting will be a issue and I think the ride will compromised on anything but the flatest roads.

I thought you had an 8" rim? Les Schawb sounds like a joke if they are going to try and put that tire on an 8" rim.
This is pulled directly from Toyo's site
265/35ZR18 93W 241630 9.0-9.5-10.5 24.7 10.3 25.4 10.6 11.9 1433 44 819
Toyo recommends that a 9-10.5" rim be used for a 265. Besides not looking good, the tire will not perform as well either as it will not sit flat on the pavement.
I would not even go 255 wioth an 8" rim. After having had 245 and 255 on my 8.5" rim the 245 looks better IMO but the 255 rides better, handles better and provides a little more rim protection. With a 8" rim go with the 245, you won't be sorry you did.

OK I just got out the yard stick and measured the rims to the best I could. With the metal yard stick against the inside of the wheel and up against my fingers on the back of the rim, I measure 9.25 inches metal to metal. These are suppose to be the standard Aspec Factory Wheels that come on the 6 Speed MT as an option in 04. Front and back measure the same.
How do you measure the width of the rim anyway? Where do people come up with the 8 inch number?
If I put on the 265s, there would be 5/8s of an inch of extra rubber past the rims on either side in theory. Would that be enough to make the car drive like crap?

There is nothing special or magical about your rims. They are the 04 8.5" not 9.5" rims so you can safely go with 255's.
There was some confusion on which A-spec wheel you had as 04 they were 8.5" and 05+ Acura changed to 8" because of all the damage that was happening as the wheel stuck out further than the rubber.
The 04 is a superior wheel from a performance standpoint when compared to the 05+ wheel, as one can safely mount wider tires on the 8.5", but 265 really is to wide. I'm not saying it can't be done as some have tried, just not ideal or recommended.
Sounds like you've made up your mind to go with 265's so if there is someone dumb enough to mount them on your car and you are ok with it then there is no need to convince you otherwise.
Good luck with your purchase.

No, I haven't made up my mind. Thats why I'm posting these messages. Just trying to learn and explore the options.
So the rim measurement is probably to the inside lip, not the outside metal?
Thanks for the advice.
Has anyone tried to re-cal the speeometer with larger wheels on their TL?

Would you go for 255/40s or 255/35s? I guess smaller tire, less rubber, more miles on the car, speedometer faster than you really are, more torque, better handling? Larger tire, more rubber, speedometer slower than you really are, less miles on the car. Do you have a preference?

I HAVE 265/35 ZR 18's on my A-Spec wheels. However, I have an '04 and have the 8.5" x 18 wheels. The tire guy said they seated fine, but I could not get any more width. By that account, I say that anyone with the '05 A-Spec with the 8" wheels are out of luck. Sorry.

If you like to do noting but cruise 7.5 will work fine. For me I'll take all the performance I can get and my 8.5 matted with a 255 work very well. I'm pretty sure you could only go up to a 225 on a 7.5 and why would anyone want to do that unless gas milage or snow traction was your first priority.

I went ahead and got 245s for my 8.5" rims. They offer a bit of rim protection, not as much as a 255 or a 265 would, but I'm happy. I noticed that when the 245s went on, they had a sticker on the inside that said 8.5" The 235s that came off had a rim protection lip, but since they were made for a smaller rim, it did nothing..
