235 or 245

It seems people here are getting 245 but the sears guy (yea i know) kept telling me the car uses 235 for a reason. What are you thoughts? I have an 04tl auto with standard rims etc.

My guess is that it was cheaper for Honda to get them. That's probably why my non-navi 6MT has the POS Turanza EL42s instead of Michelins like the navi TLs.

I'm going for the 245 size, which is about $6 more per tire.

Nope. They are not that dissimilar in size. I went with the 245s in a Bridgestone S-03 flavor after having good luck with them on the wife's S2000. An 8" rim is in the recommended range.

The difference in ride height is 0.2". Not a whole lot. Tread width is roughly the same, but there is somewhat more sidewall to protect the rim.

Your speedo will be slightly off with 245's as the overall diameter of the tire is a little more with 245's. There are plenty of calculators online but I believe it is about 1 mph high at 60

When I replaced the Bullshitstones with Falkens, I got the 235's since they didn't have the 245's in stock. If I had to do all over again, I would have waited for the 245's. They do fit the same rims and are 3/10's of an inch larger both width wise and on the diameter. That additional 3/10's makes the rims slightly less suseptable to scrape damage. For a mere few bucks extra, it's a no brainer, and a given for my next set of tires......regardless of brand.

Well, I have the 6MT and put the 245s on the aspec rims for the summer. More rubber = better handling. I switch back to the stock rims with the 235 Dunlop M3s winter tires for winter, for better snow performance.

The 235 are cheaper and I’d keep them for the AT for all seasons in DC … just my 2 cents.

I have an '05 w/standard rims, and I had never thought about widening the tread to 245 (even though I widened the tread on my '01 CLS).

Just for rim protection alone was reason enough for me!

I have a 04 5AT. I called a local Firestone store and they insisted that Acura only recommends 235 for the stock wheels. He told me they can put the 245 on, but Acura dealer may decline any warrenty repair work related to the struts, shocks, etc. in the future.

He strongly suggested I use the same size as the stock EL 42.

Any thoughts?

I would doubt that Acura would even notice the slightly increased tire size during warrantee word. On top of that, they would have to PROVE that your tires caused suspension damage. And in all likelihood, they would rule out the tire as the cause. I think the tire dealer just wanted to cover his rear end in case something happened and you sued him for allowing you to put a non spec tire on your car.

He so right. I have 265/35 ZR 18's on mine (Have A-spec 8.5" wheels). Wider is better. Drives like different car now. Since I'm in Texas, don't worry 'bout snow too much. If we get 1/2" of snow, we just all stay home.

I'd say go as wide as possible, and remain safe.

Anyone who has stepped to the 245s: have you noticed a change in the ride over the 235s?

I am happy with the OEM Michelins, but would like to add a bit more 'cush'. I realize I may compromise some performance, but I never drive near this car's limits. Although I am happy with the Michelins, I would like to shop a tire / size that will better them on ride / noise and flatspotting (the Michelins have minimal for a very short period in the morning). Being in Florida, I would think a Grand Touring Summer tire in 245/45/17 would be the target? Oddly I see ratings on All Season tires have higher marks for ride/noise comfort. But again, the comparos are usually within the same class tire (not a Grand Touring Summer vs Grand Touring All Season).

Appreciate the performance afficianados out here, but my needs are slightly different. Anyone with similar views / experience? Hopefully by the time I am ready to swap em, there will be others who have results to share.

Cheers.

As a fellow Florida TL'er...agree all seasons are not necessary. I too would like a cushier ride and grand touring summer tires would fit the bill but find the same comparos you've noted.

Don't get me to lying...

I have the A-Spec gunmetal wheels that came with the car (full A-Spec package). I know they're the 8.5" wheels, other than that...

The 265/35 ZR18's fit beautifully, and I actually get a bit of protection for the rims now. Couldn't even go through a car wash before with the 235/40 ZR18's that I had originally.

No rubbing or issues as of yet. They are still new tires for me.

Can anyone answer the offset question for these wheels?

Let's assume all tires are sized EXACTLY (they are not: a 235/45-17 from Michelin will not have the same rolling diameter as a Bridgestone of the same 235/45-17 size. this also does not account for how much the tires "grow" at higher speed).

Having assumed this, your speedo will read 1.41% too slow w/ a 245/45-17. this size changes your final gearing (so to speak) by that much. it was not noticeable for me (Bridgestone S-03's). What was noticeable was the increase in grip, tho'this has more to do w/ the tire/compund than an extra 10mm of width.

it's worth the extra rim protection-

here's a toy for you:

All the tires in this size I checked at Tire Rack show a minimum recommended rim width of 8.5".

Went to four dealers in NYC (Ganin, PepBoyz, Strauss, Marbren) and no one would put 245 45 17's on the car. All looked at me like I was nuts and told me to keep my money unless I went with the factory installed 235 45 size.

At 25,000 miles and needed to ditch the Bridgestones bad so I caved in and got the Falken 512's at 235. Guess I'll never know how good the car could handle and will let you know if rims survive the next pothole blowout on the BQE, I've had two already.

That's odd. Which Ganin did you go to? I went to the one in the Bronx last year. Got the 235's because the 245's were on backorder at the time. If I had to do all over again, I would have waited. The guys at that location had no problem with 245's if I wanted them. Next set of tires, I'm going 245's!

Oh, and as for blowouts, my original Bullshitstones had 2 flats within the 1st 600 miles. That's when I got rid of them, right at the end of the car's breakin period.

245 is recommended

by the tire's store manager. He said 255 45 17 is fine too..he said he was supprise at how small the 235 is compare to the rims...i think the EL 42 is just too narrow for 235...even the 245 tires..the width of it is smaller than some 235 of another brand like avon or kuhmo

This is not necessarily the case with all tires. For example, our stock EL42's on the '04 6MT TL's has a diameter of 25.5 inches. If you were to go with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires in the OEM size, the diameter would be 25.6 inches. However, it you got the Pilot Sports in 245/40 YR17, the diameter would drop to 24.9 inches.

That's a significant decrease in size. What does this mean to you? A smaller diameter tire has the same effect as going to a lower final drive ratio. It also will cause your speedometer to report speeds faster than you are actually traveling.

The reverse is true with a tire of larger diameter. Like going with a higher gear and showing a slower speed.

Keep in mind, when going to a lower gear (shorter diameter tires, too), your acceleration and throttle response will increase and do the opposite with a taller tire.

Get the Toyo Proxes 4 in the 245 width - very nice ride, great handling, and you will get lots of miles out of them (main reason I got an All-season instead of a summer tire.

I just bought four Michelin Pilot Sport 245/45 17 Z rated tires on ebay for $433. (They had 500 miles on them). It cost me $55 to mount and balance. So, for $488, I have virtually new Pilots in a larger size. You cannot believe how bad the EL 42's are until you put some "real tires" on. The 245's run fine with no rubbing.
