225/55s on stock rims don't rub (response to private email)

I checked my profile because I was not getting notified and discovered I hadn't updated my email since AT&T changed it. I saw a private email asking if my tires rubbed. I fixed my email and intended to get back and respond, but the message went away.

So, Don (?) I have experienced no problems whatsoever with the 225/55 size. Haven't had to trim the infamous plastic tabs either. The first time I replaced tires, I went with Goodyear 215/55s and found that they were really too short. Speedo calibration was off and admittedly, they didn't look as good. After reading that other folks here used the 225/55 size, I went to Tire Rack and was fully prepared to get some Goodyear Eagle HPs. After looking at the reviews for those and others, instead I went with the Bridgestone RE-950s as a better compromise. They are a great deal at $456 delivered.

Indeed, I got a call from Tire Rack asking me if I was sure they would fit as they did not have much experience with other 16" sizes on the TL. The 225s are EXACTLY the same height as the 205/60s and not radically wider. It seems that most problems experienced with rubbin' occur with aftermarket wheels that are either much wider and/or have an improper offset.

If we jump from 205 to 225 on stock 16" rim, will it spill out alot? Can you post any pic?

I have 215/55 on my stock 16" rims. I was going to go for 225/55 but first the shop refused to install for me. And second, after I have the 215/55 on my car, it's already very close to rubbing. My car is lowered with H&R sports. If I have had 225/55, I might get some rubbing problems. I know the speedo is off, but the shorter profile looks quite good with the drop.

I was the one that sent you the message. Thanks for getting back and if you don't mind, please post some pics. BTW, I'm not Don(?).

The RE950's are GREAT tires. I had them on my last car.... they comapre to many Z-rated tires in terms of grip. Good choice.

Question

Anybody with 225/55's have the inside of there tire wearing faster?

My car isn't dropped but my car seems to be going through tires like it has a camber problem. I think I'll try some Yokohama DB next but I don't want all 225/55 to wear like my Kumho's did.

You need an alignment. I don't think it's your tires.

i have 225-50 no rubbing what so ever. my tires were wearing on the inside pretty quick also but i had an alignment done to correct the toe out, it would take alot of negative camber to equal a little toe out

Could it be the sidewall is spilling out so much and the natural movement of suspension that goes to (-) as it compresses? I want some beefier tires, but I don't want aftermath like that.

Sorry guys, I've been out of town for a while. Here are some pics:

I think 225/55s are the best overall compromise in size. They have the same diameter as the 205/60s and by using the stock 16" wheels, it avoids the horsepower loss of going to 18s or larger.

Also someone mentioned the shop refused to mount 225 on 16x6.5 stock rims because it's not safe.

225/55-16 will fit just fine on a 6.5" wheel. In fact most manufacturers spec wheel widths of 6-8" for this size tire.

As Dirty Harry noted long ago, "A man has to know his limitations." Here we have a case of local incompetence. Note the factory recommendation is for a rim of 6 to 8 inches.
