225/55s on stock rims don't rub (response to private email)
I checked my profile because I was not getting notified and discovered I hadn't updated my email since AT&T changed it. I saw a private email asking if my tires rubbed. I fixed my email and intended to get back and respond, but the message went away.
So, Don (?) I have experienced no problems whatsoever with the 225/55 size. Haven't had to trim the infamous plastic tabs either. The first time I replaced tires, I went with Goodyear 215/55s and found that they were really too short. Speedo calibration was off and admittedly, they didn't look as good. After reading that other folks here used the 225/55 size, I went to Tire Rack and was fully prepared to get some Goodyear Eagle HPs. After looking at the reviews for those and others, instead I went with the Bridgestone RE-950s as a better compromise. They are a great deal at $456 delivered.
Indeed, I got a call from Tire Rack asking me if I was sure they would fit as they did not have much experience with other 16" sizes on the TL. The 225s are EXACTLY the same height as the 205/60s and not radically wider. It seems that most problems experienced with rubbin' occur with aftermarket wheels that are either much wider and/or have an improper offset.

I have 215/55 on my stock 16" rims. I was going to go for 225/55 but first the shop refused to install for me. And second, after I have the 215/55 on my car, it's already very close to rubbing. My car is lowered with H&R sports. If I have had 225/55, I might get some rubbing problems. I know the speedo is off, but the shorter profile looks quite good with the drop.

Anybody with 225/55's have the inside of there tire wearing faster?
My car isn't dropped but my car seems to be going through tires like it has a camber problem. I think I'll try some Yokohama DB next but I don't want all 225/55 to wear like my Kumho's did.

i have 225-50 no rubbing what so ever. my tires were wearing on the inside pretty quick also but i had an alignment done to correct the toe out, it would take alot of negative camber to equal a little toe out

I think 225/55s are the best overall compromise in size. They have the same diameter as the 205/60s and by using the stock 16" wheels, it avoids the horsepower loss of going to 18s or larger.
